One of the most important things that you and your family can do is to make a plan. You may not be together when disaster strikes. You’ll want to have a plan in place for all members of your household – including pets!
You will receive emergency alerts on 560 WQAM. Make sure you download the Audacy app to stay up to date and connected.
Check with your city and county for an updated list of all available shelters. If you have a pet, some shelters will allow you to bring them with you. Check in advance.
You will also need to map out an evacuation route in the event of a mandatory evacuation.
For your family and household, make sure that you have a communication plan in place. Also, if you are not together when disaster strikes, decide where and how you will meet up well in advance.
There are lots of ways to put together a basic disaster supplies kit. Here are a few things to consider.
- You will need approximately one gallon of water per person per day
- Have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food on hand
- A battery powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio
- First aid kit
- Flashlight
- Manual can food opener
- A map of the local area
- Cell phone, charger and backup battery
- Extra batteries
- Prescription medication
- Masks, hand sanitizer, soap and disinfecting wipes
- Tools needed to turn off utilities (i.e. pliers)
- Pet food and extra water for your pets
- Cash or traveler’s checks
- Important family documents
- Fire extinguisher
- Matches (keep them dry in a Ziploc bag or plastic container)
- Games, puzzles, and books or other activities for yourself and your family
- Quick grab bag should you need to evacuate (complete change of clothes, extra shoes, medication)
- Infant formula and diapers
Of course, you’ll want to make sure that you have all necessary materials to secure your home. It’s a good idea to clean drains and gutters in advance, install hurricane shutters or purchase plywood to secure windows, and be sure to store all of your outdoor furniture and any other objects that could become projectiles.
Power outages are not uncommon during and following a hurricane. Keep your cell phone charged and limit use if necessary so that you’re able to make a call should you need assistance. Help your neighbors if you can. Miami communities have a way of really coming together during a storm. Keep a list of important phone numbers handy. You may need to contact your utility company, insurance company, and FEMA, the Red Cross or another disaster agency. Plan now, stay informed and stay safe!
