Gungrave's first episode is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the action and animation are top-notch, delivering some intense and thrilling fight scenes that are sure to get your heart racing. Unfortunately, the story and characters are a delusional mess that leaves a lot to be desired.
The episode follows the newly resurrected Beyond the Grave as he protects Mika and Dr. Tokioka from a group of shape-shifting monsters. While the action is entertaining, the plot is confusing and poorly executed, leaving the viewer with more questions than answers. Additionally, the characters lack depth, with their motivations and personalities feeling underdeveloped and forgettable.
Despite its flaws, Gungrave does show promise later on in the series. As the story progresses, the characters become more fleshed out, and the plot becomes clearer and more engaging. So, while the first episode may be a disappointment, it's worth sticking with the series to see how it develops. Overall, Gungrave's first episode is a 6/10 - a decent start, but with room for improvement.
