Two held for flogging woman in Garo Hills of Meghalaya after video goes viral

SHILLONG: Two persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the public flogging of a woman at Lower Teksagre, a remote village under Damal Asim Police Station in Dadenggre of West Garo Hills district.
The incident came to light after the video of the assault went viral. The incident occurred on June 25 in front of the village’s community hall.
The incident has sparked outrage in the state which has a matrilineal society.
SP (West Garo Hills) said the culprits were close relatives of the victim.
The police have urged the public to refrain from sharing the video to protect the victim’s privacy and dignity. A case has been filed at Tura Women Police Station under relevant sections of law. The victim, seen in the video being repeatedly beaten with sticks, has been taken for a medical check-up.
A senior police officer said action is being initiated against those involved in the crime.

West Garo Hills district administration, led by deputy commissioner Jagdish Chelani, has launched a probe into the incident. The nokma (village chief) has been summoned to provide testimony.
