Beryl has maximum sustained winds of near 75 mph, according to a midnight Eastern time update from the National Hurricane Center. It is expected to be even stronger when it makes landfall near Matagorda, a Texas town between Corpus Christi and Houston.
Hurricane-force winds could affect several coastal counties south of Galveston into early Monday morning, the National Weather Service in Houston said.
Texas officials have urged thousands of coastal residents to evacuate Sunday ahead of Beryl’s arrival, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) declared a state of emergency in 121 counties. Travel is expected to be difficult on Monday, he added.
Beryl cut a destructive path through the Caribbean in recent days, killing at least 11 people as it wrecked homes, tore down power lines and battered trees.
