Salem High School Reviews
Rating 3.91 out of 5 Â 660 reviews
Salem High School has a specialized academy in visual and performing arts. The student body is extremely diverse and the teachers are patient, passionate, and kind. It offers a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, but it lacks emphasis on STEM-related subjects. Although it specializes in the arts, it should still provide opportunities for students that are not in the academy. There is a decent amount of clubs and extracurricular activities, but (again) not much in STEM, thus limiting access for some students. The environment and building itself is well-maintained, but it feels dull and gloomy due to lack of sunlight (personal opinion). Overall, Salem provides adequate education to its students.
The school is not great. The teachers are rude, the food is nasty, the facilities aren't taken care of properly (for example, disgusting bathrooms, nasty wrestling room, smelly locker rooms, etc.), and school activities are being poorly funded. For example, the girls varsity soccer team doesn't even get new jerseys or equipment as often as the football team. Also, our NJROTC unit is being run like it's the Naval Academy. We couldn't even compete in the 2023-2024 school year because we don't have enough students to qualify. School spirit is horrible because the district is filled with strict, old people. Vaping is such a huge issue at our school and teachers don't even solve the issue properly. They just send the students who vape/use drugs to the Renaissance Academy, which is an awful school.
The best part of my experience at Salem is the support of my teachers and faculty. They truly invested in me during my high school career. I also had the best experience with the available opportunities that allowed me to participate in out of the classroom learning. As a result of me being in the academy for dance at Salem I was able to travel and have experiences in the career I am interested in.
I have not had a bad experience at Salem, but if I could suggest improvement it would be to begin distributing senior information before the school year begins.
I am the captain of the cheer team and have been for 2 years now. This position is very demanding and takes up a lot of after school time. I love being a leader, but it has limited me from being able to join any other club or activity in school. If I had to think of something that could be changed it would be to stagger extracurricular activity times to give students the option to be able to participate in more than one activity.
