  • Angels' Griffin Canning: Struggles again in loss

Canning (3-9) took the loss against the Cubs on Friday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

Canning surrendered a two-run homer in the first inning and allowed two more runs before being pulled with two outs to go in the fifth. This was the first time the righty failed to complete five frames in a start since April 13, and he has now yielded four earned runs four times in his past five outings. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 4.87 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 67:34 K:BB over 98 innings. He lines up for a home matchup with the Rangers next week.

  • Angels' Andrew Wantz: Shifted to 60-day IL

Wantz (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL on Friday.

The move will free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Keston Hiura, who'll also join the active roster Friday. Wantz was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with elbow inflammation, and there hasn't been any further updates on the injury. He won't be eligible for reinstatement until the end of August.

  • Angels' Keston Hiura: Back in majors with Angels

The Angels selected Hiura's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.

It's the first stint in the big leagues since 2022 for Hiura, who has slashed .270/.346/.536 with 18 home runs at the Triple-A level this season split between the Tigers and Angels organizations. He is starting at designated hitter and batting eighth Friday against the Cubs in his Angels debut.

  • Angels' Luis Rengifo: Goes on IL with wrist inflammation

The Angels placed Rengifo on the 10-day injured list Friday with right wrist inflammation.

It appears an MRI cleared Rengifo of any structural damage in the wrist, but with the All-Star break looming, the Angels have opted to go ahead and put the super utility player on the IL. Rengifo will be eligible for activation on July 14, the last day of the first half, but realistically he'll probably be held out at least through the break. He had been seeing most of his playing time lately at third base, and that position now figures to be occupied mostly by Miguel Sano.

  • Angels' Luis Rengifo: Out of lineup, MRI results TBD

Rengifo (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game versus the Cubs, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

The Angels are still waiting on the results of an MRI on Rengifo's wrist, which he injured during Wednesday's game against the Athletics. He's currently listed as a reserve on the team's lineup card, but Keston Hiura has been added to the taxi squad and could replace Rengifo on the active roster, depending on the latter's test results.

  • Angels' Keston Hiura: Added to taxi squad

The Angels have added Hiura to their taxi squad ahead of Friday's game versus the Cubs, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

The team is still awaiting the results of the MRI on Luis Rengifo's right wrist, and if it's bad enough to force an injured-list stint, Hiura is poised to be added to the roster. Hiura has slashed .270/.346/.536 with 18 home runs in 68 games at the Triple-A level this season split between the Tigers and Angels organizations. He has not appeared in a major-league game since 2022.

  • Angels' Jo Adell: Records 10th steal

Adell went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Thursday's 5-0 loss to the Athletics.

Adell's steal was his first since June 8 and his 10th of the season. The outfielder hit just .185 with a 4:20 BB:K over 21 contests between thefts, so he wasn't doing much to give himself an opportunity to make an impact with baserunning. Overall, he's at a .186/.250/.390 slash line with 13 home runs, 36 RBI, 32 runs scored, seven doubles and a triple over 260 plate appearances this year.

  • Angels' Zach Neto: Logs steal in loss

Neto went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Thursday's 5-0 loss to the Athletics.

Neto has collected three steals over his last nine games despite going a poor 6-for-32 (.188) in that span. The shortstop is up to 12 steals on 18 attempts this season. He's added a .247/.297/.427 slash line with 11 home runs, 38 RBI and 33 runs scored over 84 contests. While he offers decent power and speed, he'll need to make more consistent contact to be reliable in the majority of fantasy formats.

  • Angels' Roansy Contreras: Struggles versus Athletics

Contreras (1-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out one across 2.2 innings to take the loss versus the Athletics on Thursday.

Contreras lasted three frames in his previous start, also against Oakland, but he ran into trouble in the third frame Thursday. The right-hander has pitched to a 3.72 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 19.1 innings across 11 appearances with the Angels, though none of those outings have been longer than three innings. He's started his last two games since the Angels lack few in-house options for their rotation. Overall, he's at a 4.04 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 32:18 K:BB through 35.2 innings between the Angels and the Pirates this year. If he receives another start, it's projected to be at home versus the Rangers early next week.

  • Angels' Mike Trout: Runs on treadmill

Angels manager Ron Washington said Thursday that Trout (knee) has started running on a treadmill, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

It's a big step in Trout's recovery as he works his way back from surgery on a torn meniscus in early May. He has also done some hitting on the field. Trout said this past weekend that he expected to return from the injured list by late July, although he certainly has some markers he needs to hit first before making that happen.

  • Angels' Luis Rengifo: X-rays negative, but MRI coming

Rengifo is not in the lineup Thursday in Oakland after X-rays on his right wrist came back negative, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Rengifo is set to undergo an MRI on Friday to check for structural damage. The super utility player was injured during Wednesday's loss to the Athletics while taking a swing in the ninth inning. Miguel Sano is playing third base for the Angels on Thursday.

  • Angels' Anthony Rendon: Could return next week

Rendon (hamstring) is expected to take live batting practice this weekend and could be activated from the injured list as soon as July 8, per MLB.com.

Rendon hasn't played in a game since straining his left hamstring April 20, but he's recently ramped up his participation in baseball activities and is on the verge of batting against live pitching. The veteran third baseman previously indicated that he was considering agreeing to a minor-league rehab assignment, but it now appears that a rehab stint will be bypassed. Given the amount of time Rendon has been out, the Angels may elect to work him back into the lineup at a careful pace upon his return. However, the team may be in need of reinforcement at third base if Luis Rengifo's wrist injury is more than minor.

  • Angels' Davis Daniel: Serves up two homers in loss

Daniel (1-1) took the loss against the Athletics on Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out three.

Daniel allowed baserunners in five of the six frames in which he appeared and was finally chased from the game after giving up solo homers in both the fifth and sixth innings. The right-hander was unable to recreate the magic from his first start when he shut out the Tigers over eight frames June 27, though he'll look to rebound next week when the Angels travel back home to take on the Rangers.

  • Angels' Luis Rengifo: Exits with injury

Rengifo was removed from Wednesday's game versus Oakland due to an apparent injury, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Rengifo's hand/wrist seemed to be bothering him after he fouled off a pitch in the ninth inning, and he was immediately replaced at the plate following the incident. The specifics of his injury remain unknown, but the Angels will presumably take him in for imaging and should offer more information ahead of Thursday's game.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Receiving Wednesday off

O'Hoppe is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics.

O'Hoppe is in the midst of a modest six-game hit streak and has gone 8-for-19 with two homers and three walks during that span, but he'll sit Wednesday after making five straight starts. Matt Thaiss will step in behind the plate to catch for righty Davis Daniel.
