State Highlights
Rick Snyder, a moderate Republican and former chief executive of the Gateway computer company, sailed to victory in the race for governor, defeating Virg Bernero, the mayor of Lansing.
Though he had no government experience, Mr. Snyder described himself as a “tough nerd” who would use his business skills to revitalize the economy.
Mr. Snyder talked more about jobs than about divisive social issues in the race to succeed Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm, a Democrat.
Representative John D. Dingell, a Democrat who is the longest-serving member of the House, won a 29th term.
In the First District, which includes the Upper Peninsula, Dan Benishek, a Republican favorite of Tea Party supporters, defeated Gary McDowell, a Democratic state representative. Mr. Benishek, a surgeon, will take the seat held for 18 years by Representative Bart Stupak, a Democrat who is retiring.
In the Seventh District, which includes Battle Creek, Tim Walberg, a conservative Republican, took back the seat he lost in 2008 to Mark Schauer, a moderate Democrat.
In the Ninth District, which includes Detroit suburbs, Representative Gary Peters, a freshman Democrat, held onto his seat by narrowly defeating the Republican challenger, Rocky Raczkowski.
