Alias Hook: A Novel Hardcover – July 8, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
"Every child knows how the story ends. The wicked pirate captain is flung overboard, caught in the jaws of the monster crocodile who drags him down to a watery grave. But it was not yet my time to die. It's my fate to be trapped here forever, in a nightmare of childhood fancy, with that infernal, eternal boy."
Meet Captain James Benjamin Hook, a witty, educated Restoration-era privateer cursed to play villain to a pack of malicious little boys in a pointless war that never ends. But everything changes when Stella Parrish, a forbidden grown woman, dreams her way to the Neverland in defiance of Pan's rules. From the glamour of the Fairy Revels, to the secret ceremonies of the First Tribes, to the mysterious underwater temple beneath the Mermaid Lagoon, the magical forces of the Neverland open up for Stella as they never have for Hook. And in the pirate captain himself, she begins to see someone far more complex than the storybook villain.
With Stella's knowledge of folk and fairy tales, she might be Hook's last chance for redemption and release if they can break his curse before Pan and his warrior boys hunt her down and drag Hook back to their neverending game. Alias Hook by Lisa Jensen is a beautifully and romantically written adult fairy tale.

About the author
I've painted pottery, sold movie tickets and books, drawn cartoons for magazines, and hand-crafted fabric dolls to sell at street fairs. Now I get to write full-time, first movie and book reviews, then novels; the hours are flexible and there's no dress code. My movie reviews appear on Rotten Tomatoes. My novel, "Beast: A Tale of Love and Revenge," comes out in July, 2018, from Candlewick. My historical/fantasy "Alias Hook," was published by Thomas Dunne Books in July, 2014. My historical pirate novel, "The Witch From the Sea," was published in 2001. So of course, when a copy arrived in my mailbox, I was deadly anxious. Because my expectations were sky high, and the ARC was sent by the author herself. So yes. I was very, very nervous.
But Lisa Jensen clearly knows what she’s doing.
ALIAS HOOK is a masterpiece, and I don’t say that lightly. The prose is painstakingly beautiful, giving off a feeling that can only be described as antique. Captain Hook is from an era before ours, after all. From page one to the end, I was full of wonder, excitement.
Because ALIAS HOOK is a fairytale. A fairytale meant for the classics. A fairytale narrated by the so-called villain, and it is glorious.
I’m a huge fan of Captain Hook. Maybe not the permed Disney version, but most definitely the Once Upon a Time version. From the moment Stella is first introduced in ALIAS HOOK, my Captain Swan (from OUaT) feelings began to bounce all over the place.
ALIAS HOOK puts a twist on the Peter Pan tale. Pan is pure evil, in the eyes of Hook. We learn the story of how James Benjamin Hookbridge becomes a pirate, how he ends up in Neverland, and how he loses his hand. We learn a lot of things from Hook’s past while moving on with the current story, and I loved that.
The ending was my most anticipated moment. Will the villain finally get his happy ending? Or is sacrifice the only redemption a villain can receive? I wasn’t expecting the story to end as it did, and while it was sort of bittersweet, it was expertly done.
As Stella would say, ALIAS HOOK is absobloodylutely good. In Hook’s words: it’s a buggering must-read.
A little note: I wouldn’t call it fully fit for the YA audience as there are some mature instances. But nothing too graphic.
Jensen does a great job bringing you to love a character that we once grew up to hate. Hook is sexy and smart, but still needs to learn to grow up. Wishing he could end his eternal torture, never quite dying when fighting Pan, yet having to endure all of the pain, he is given one last chance to redeem himself.
Destined to help Hook, Stella finds her way into Neverland even after being refused by Pan for being a grownup. She hears someone calling her and tumbles into the dreamworld. Is she the one who could lead Hook back to the real world? Or will he not be able to overcome his childish behaviors?
I enjoyed this story very much, but had some trouble when the author switched back and forth in time. We are given some history about Hook and while I appreciate knowing more about his past, I sometimes found myself at a lost as to where I was in the story.
I would also like to get to know more about the other characters in the book. The story mainly follows Hook and Stella, but I would like to get to know Hook’s crew a bit more. Why did he care for them so much if he always had a new crew every few years? I did enjoy getting to meet the different creatures, such as the sirens and the fairies.
Jensen’s take on Hook was very enjoyable and reminded me of the Once Upon a Time version of Hook. Although Hook isn’t nearly the same in this story, he reminded me greatly of Colin O’Donoghue’s take on the character.
So if you enjoy pirates, action, adventure, and some romance, this book is for you. I give this story a 4.2/5. I loved the story but didn’t like how the flashbacks were executed. Jensen is very good at describing her worlds and bringing everything to life. I hope you will be able to pick this book up.
And besides, no one can truly resist a pirate…
Original review on A Bibliophile's Reverie
That’s why ALIAS HOOK is such a pleasant surprise, and it may be because the perspective is from the villainous Captain Hook rather than Peter Pan. Jensen doesn’t strip away Hook’s essential “badness.” What she does is give a character that was one-dimensional some depth. Then she proceeds to allow this character to grow up (while showing why Pan cannot).
This is such a well-crafted piece of writing. It sucks you in to sit at Hook’s mangled elbow to see his anger, his sorrow, his pride. She gives him layers and layers (just as any person has), and then presents him with someone he might show those layers to.
In unraveling Hook’s personality, she also gives depth to the whole of Neverland. The only one who doesn’t get a chance to tell their point of view is the ticking crock – and I suppose that’s best. Who wants a talkative emotionally depthy crocodile?
That this becomes a complex love story with a tender resolution is even more surprising. Well done, Lisa Jensen!

If you're disappointed in that other Hook and his leather pants, then this Hook is probably for you.
