The man behind the ultimate robot extravaganza

Future Thinking: Dean Kamen

How can you inspire young inventors? Entrepreneur Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway, is harnessing the glitz of professional sport…but with robots.

Once a year, young people from all over the US come together to compete in a ‘robot Superbowl’. It’s the idea of Dean Kamen, creator of the Segway, who believes such events are key to inspiring the next generation of inventors.

He runs First (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology), a charity that encourages students to embrace engineering and technology through cooperative competitions that resemble sporting events. Through a mentorship programme, sportsmanship and robotics competitions, he wants to inspire them to go on and build tomorrow’s next big thing.
