DPAA Hosts Repatriation Ceremony on Guadalcanal

U.S. and Solomon Islands personnel participate in a repatriation ceremony on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Aug. 23, 2024.

During the ceremony, DPAA team members and members of the Solomon Islands government transferred possible osseous material to DPAA for potential laboratory identification on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

There are approximately 72,000 U.S. personnel unaccounted for from WWII. Of those, 374 are unaccounted for from Guadalcanal.

US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns Visits DPAA in Hawaii

Chris Phelps, DPAA Indo-Pacific Director, hosted US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns at our facility at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, on Aug. 21 for a lab tour and a roundtable discussion with agency leadership and subject matter experts.

DPAA and Republic of Korea sign Memorandum of Understanding

The MOU is an agreement to promote mutual interests in identifying the remains of missing personnel from past conflicts through cooperation in the fields of research, investigation, excavation, and forensic science on the basis of the principles of equality and mutual benefit.

Recovery Operations Continue in Vietnam

DPAA routinely conducts recovery missions to Vietnam to locate the approximately 1,575 unaccounted personnel.

U.S. Embassy Ambassador visits DPAA in Lao DPR

U.S. Army Capt. Brett Harris, a DPAA team leader, demonstrates operations while Khampheng Duangthonglaa, Director General of the Europe and Americas Department of the Foreign Ministry of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Heather Variava, U.S. ambassador to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, visits a recovery site Aug. 13, 2024.

During their distinguished visit, they witnessed the recovery efforts for missing U.S. service members lost during the Vietnam War.

More than 1,000 missing personnel have been identified and returned to their families for burial since the end of the conflict, but 1,575 Americans remain unaccounted.
