Courtland remains true to his lost love, devotes himself assiduously to business and amasses a large fortune. Isabel's husband dies, and she is compelled to support herself and child, Gertrude, by needle work. Twenty years pass and Isabel and Howard have not met again. Howard orders some fancy shirts from a haberdasher, who gives the work to Isabel. Gertrude delivers the package, and meets Howard, who is struck by her resemblance to the sweetheart of his youth, and persuades the haberdasher to give him her address. Isabel meets with a painful accident, scalding her face with boiling water, and is taken to the hospital. During her absence Howard calls frequently upon Gertrude, falls in love with her and wins her promise to marry him. When Isabel returns home Gertrude tells of her engagement, and takes her mother to meet her fiancé at his magnificent mansion. As Howard enters the room Isabel recognizes him and drops her veil. When alone she struggles with her emotions and prays for guidance as to which course to pursue. Should she reveal herself and revive the slumbering love in Howard's heart, or should she vanish from sight and leave Gertrude in her new-found happiness? Her mother-love conquers, and she decides upon the latter course. Gertrude tearfully rushes to Howard with the farewell note from her mother, and he convinces her the best way out of her dilemma is to marry him at once. AS the minister is speaking the solemn words which makes them one, the mother is seen at the latticed window, peering in from the outside darkness upon the tableau in the drama of life which insures her daughter's happiness and makes Isabel a homeless wanderer.
