- "The International Film Festival for Young People, Gijón, aims to present the newest tendencies of young cinema worldwide. The point is to show those new films where youngsters get involved with their concerns on the lives they are living. These are also the kind of films made under non-conventional rules but creative, independent and innovative made by, or for, young people." (from the festival's web site, 1999)
- The festival is recognized by the FIAPF as "specialized festival" and a member of the European Coordination of Film Festivals.
- The festival takes place since 1963.

"Rellumes" Prize
- Rellumes is a new competitive section of the Gijon International Film Festival. Its name, which means "flashes of light or lightning", gives us an idea of the brilliant shine of the films chosen for this special competition.
