Robert De Niro apparently didn’t come to the “Joker” set completely off-book.
While talking with Jason Ritter on Maron’s podcast “Wtf,” the comedian and host recounted his days on set with Robert De Niro filming “Joker.” Maron said that the legendary actor kept forgetting his lines, which helped make him seem more like a real person.
“I did that one scene with De Niro in ‘Joker’ and I was literally watching him, because I was on the set all week, and he’s playing that talk show host,” Maron said. “He doesn’t know his lines, and they’re doing it over and over again. It was totally demystifying De Niro to me, because I’ve watched him my whole life.”
Maron added, “Obviously he’s a great actor, but they understand something – people who live their lives on-camera and have been doing it that long – because I...

Todd Phillips' "Joker" is the most divisive film to ever gross over $1 billion worldwide. This might sound like a strange thing to say about a film that was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won two, but many of the film's detractors absolutely abhor the film. There are several reasons for this (one of them being certain critics' knee-jerk hatred of all things comic book related), but Phillips' most egregious offense might've been paying aggressive homage to Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" and "The King of Comedy." These are two of the most emotionally scarring character studies of psychically damaged loners ever put to film; they're peak Scorsese, and they are not to be touched by a filmmaker best known for his rowdy R-rated comedies about men who, in their way, are every bit as dangerous to society as Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin.

Lady Gaga has finally spoken out about old rumors that claimed she was born a man. During an appearance on Netflix’s What’s Next? The Future With Bill Gates, she addressed the speculation directly, telling Gates she never felt the need to respond because she “didn’t feel like a victim.”
“When I was in my early 20s there was a rumor that I was a man,” Lady Gaga told Gates in the episode. “I went all over the world. I traveled for tours and for promoting my records...

Forget 'Send In The Clowns' — how about 'Send Down The Clown'? That certainly looks to be the idea in the latest trailer for Todd Phillips all-singing, all-dancing movie with music Joker: Folie À Deux, which sees Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck taking to the stand as he goes on trial for the televised killing of Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) in Joker. Joining him in the courtroom — and Arkham Asylum (and in a slew of fantastical musical_esque_ sequences) — is Harley "Lee" Quinn, with whom yer man Joker strikes up a potentially romantic, definitely dangerous bond. Check out the trailer, in which Phoenix and Gaga use music and song to express that which words alone are not enough to say, below:
"They're saying you're a bad influence on me," says Gaga at the start of the new trailer, which juxtaposes more of Phillips' 70s inspired, gritty take on Gotham as...

Warner Bros. has released an exclusive clip from the much-anticipated drama, Joker: Folie à Deux. The 60-second video features Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn visiting an emaciated Arthur Fleck, or Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who is in a mental institution. Before she leaves, she pulls out a red lipstick and smears a clownish grin, eyebrows, and nose on the disgraced Joker.

Since hitting the big screens back in the ’70s, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver has cemented itself as one of the most influential films of all time. Apart from its impeccable cinematography, Bernard Herrmann’s iconic score, and Robert De Niro’s masterful acting, the film further benefits from Jodie Foster’s portrayal of Iris.

Robert De Niro has been a part of several high-profile movies such as The Godfather, Taxi Driver, and Jackie Brown, to name a few. Considered one of Hollywood’s greatest actors, his acting prowess is known to many. But on the personal life front, De Niro prefers keeping it as hidden from the media as possible.

With a plethora of high-profile movies and shows, Robert De Niro can easily be one of Hollywood’s most influential actors. The most evident proof of this lies in the numerous accolades to his name, including two Academy Awards. Though he’s a big star today, his early career started in the 1960s with several minor and supporting roles.

Image Source: Warner Bros Outside of The Godfather franchise, perhaps no Hollywood film about the Mafia is as beloved as Goodfelllas. Among its seven Academy Award nominations were Best Picture, Best Director (for Martin Scorsese), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Of course, the film’s ensemble cast was a big part of its success, and it was led by screen legend Robert De Niro. De Niro played Jimmy Conway, a real person whose story was told at length in Pileggi’s book; at the time of the movie’s release, Pileggi talked about how De Niro sought him out as preparation for the role. Every so often, rumors that Marvel Studios has been in talks with some of the true Hollywood icons about potentially boarding an upcoming project do the rounds.
Though these reports don't usually pick up any steam, Kevin Feige and co. probably have spoken to pretty much every in-demand actor (or their agents) you can think of at some point or another - this doesn't mean they've officially been in negotiations for a specific role.
Last year, there was some internet scuttlebutt that the legendary Meryl Streep might have taken a meeting with the studio, and during last night's Agatha All Along premiere event, casting director Sarah Halley Finn hinted that this may have been accurate.
We don't need to list off Streep's numerous roles and accolades, but she has mostly avoided big studio blockbuster fare over the years. As Halley Finn suggests in the video interview below, it may simply...

Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead is a mélange of moods and genres ranging from Gothic horror to Bergmanesque spiritual rumination, and it shares the same maximalist approach that the filmmaker and cinematographer Robert Richardson brought to bear on 1995’s Casino. An account of sleep-deprived and burned-out paramedic Frank Pierce (Nicolas Cage) and his run of harrowing night shifts in Hell’s Kitchen, the film wastes little time in depicting Frank’s world as one of overdosing junkies and shooting victims, a place where hospitals suggest disaster zones, pulsing with the din of heart monitors and ever-raving patients.
So exhausting is this world that we meet Frank looking the way that Scorsese protagonists don’t usually look until the third act. That is, Cage enters the frame with sunken, bloodshot eyes and sallow skin. From the outset, it appears that the only thing preventing Frank from being hooked up...

Exclusive: When Francis Ford Coppola sits for a conversation about his new film Megalopolis before it plays the New York Film Festival on September 23, the master filmmaker will be interrogated by two Gotham film fixtures. That will be Robert De Niro, whom Coppola directed to his first Academy Award in The Godfather Part II, and Spike Lee, a lifelong admirer of Coppola who was among the first to see 30 minutes of Megalopolis.
The trio will take part in a conversation moderated by NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim, in an evening the festival is calling an Imax Live presentation, Megalopolis: The Ultimate Imax Experience. The studio is working on a couple other big names to give Coppola a fitting tribute. Doesn’t Al Pacino live in New York, for instance?
The discussion will center around Coppola’s influence and how his films transcend art form, with Megalopolis being his opus.

Legendary actress and filmmaker Jodie Foster has won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her role in True Detective: Night Country. The two-time Academy Award winner joined the anthology series that first starred Matthew McConaughey, with a new season set in Alaska.
Foster has been one of the most iconic actresses in Hollywood and has had her fair share of controversies. While the actress came out in 2013, she was still for a long time silent about her s*xuality. Despite being the subject of widespread speculation about being gay in the ’90s, the actress still decided to come out on her own terms years later.

[This story contains spoilers from Those About to Die season one.]
Roland Emmerich traveled back to 79 Ad for season one of his gladiator drama Those About to Die. For season two, he has dreams of traveling back even earlier.
“We hope to do a little bit what Godfather II did,” Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter of a potential season two. Emmerich says the show could tell dual stories using a “present timeline” and a “past timeline,” ala 1974’s The Godfather Part II, which explored the rise of Vito Corelione (Robert De Niro) via flashbacks and continued the story of his son Michael Corelione (Al Pacino) in the “present day” story.
In Those About to Die season two, the flashbacks would explore The Year of Four Emperors, which took place 10 years before the events of the show and included seismic moments, such as the suicide of Emperor Nero and the subsequent power grab amongst competing leaders...

Paul Schrader may think that Glen Powell is the next Paul Newman, but the “Oh, Canada” filmmaker is making it clear that Jacob Elordi could follow in Richard Gere’s filmic footsteps.
Schrader cast Elordi as the younger version of Gere’s lead character in “Oh, Canada,” which premiered in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and went on to screen at TIFF.
However, Schrader is now suggesting that Elordi might have even beat out Gere for “American Gigolo” if they had been contemporaries.

Jessica Kirson is bringing her unfiltered humor to Hulu.

The news comes as Hulu makes an aggressive push into the standup space, elbowing its way into an increasingly frothy market that’s been dominated by Netflix in recent years. The initiative, which is dubbed “Hularious,” kicks off in November with a new Jim Gaffigan special. Francis Ford Coppola is known for introducing or at least giving a chance to many future stars in his films. While films like The Godfather and its sequel propelled actors like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro to global stardom, his coming-of-age film The Outsiders was the breakthrough of a bunch of rising stars.

The 60th quadrennial presidential elections for the United States of America are right around the corner, and the buzz surrounding who could win is as strong as ever. And, especially after the heated debate between Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Vice Prez Kamala Harris on Tuesday night, the latter seems to be in the winning league as even Taylor Swift joins her side.

The series of events behind this, however, was nothing short of truly hilarious. While other Hollywood celebrities have been choosing Harris for their own reasons, the childless cat lady’s endorsement of her came only after the debate concluded, and it seems like Trump’s “They’re eating the pets” statement while referring to the Springfield incident has seriously rubbed Swift the wrong way.

Robert De Niro Turns Attention To Tribeca Lisbon
Robert De Niro has signaled the beginning of Tribeca Lisbon by saying he will approach the new offshoot with the “same spirit” as his 22-year-old U.S. festival. Speaking at a reception in New York yesterday, the double Academy Award-winner said: “Twenty-two years ago, in response to the devastation of 9/11, Jane [Rosenthal] and I founded the Tribeca Festival to help revitalize our neighborhood through the power of film, art, and storytelling. Our mission remains the same today. It means a great deal to us to bring this same spirit to Lisbon—a city with a rich cultural heritage, and a robust appetite for the arts and entertainment.” De Niro was at the event alongside Whoopi Goldberg, Tribeca co-founder Rosenthal, Mayor of Lisbon Carlos Moedas, U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Randi Charno Levine and CEO of Grupo Impresa Francisco Pedro Pinto Balsemão. Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn and other notables from entertainment, politics and business gathered Tuesday in New York to raise a glass of Portugese bubbly to Tribeca Festival Lisboa.
The venture spearheaded by Tribeca co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal announced the lineup for its first edition earlier in the day. The event is slated for October 17 to 19 in the City of Seven Hills, which has become known as an incubator of tech startups in recent years. In addition to a slate of films, programming devoted to podcasts, music and talks will round out the new fest, much as it does at the flagship Tribeca event in New York.
Attendees at the kick-off reception also included U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Randi Levine, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas and Grupo Impresa CEO Francisco Balsemão.
“What we’re doing today feels like a small yet essential step forward,” Rosenthal told guests at the Tribeca Film Center.

When Bruce Springsteen stands onstage, staring out at the crowd, or with his head bowed, and cocks his guitar behind him, that pose is now as iconic as that of the young Abraham Lincoln holding an ax over his shoulder. It’s a mythic image of American nobility. In “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” we follow Springsteen, in his first concerts since the pandemic, as he reconnects with his fabled band and they rehearse for six days and go out on a tour that will take them from the U.S. to Europe, from 2023 to 2024.
All of this is intercut with grainy footage of Bruce performing in the ’70s and early ’80s. At this point, we’re so accustomed to the older, statelier Bruce that when we see some of the earlier clips, it’s almost shocking to register just how much he moved around onstage.

Olivia, a 21-year-old college student, was sitting in an English class at her Minnesota school last week when her professor began talking about the challenges in writing about traumatic events. But when he used 9/11 as an example, and described to the class how hectic things seemed that day, she realized just how she felt — or rather, didn’t feel — about the attacks. “Being terminally online is wild [because] someone mentioned 9/11 in my class today and I genuinely forgot that not everyone thinks it’s funny now,” she subsequently wrote in a...

Gaming-inspired films are usually interesting, to say the least. They often get a bad rap for being low-quality flops (which has certainly been the case with some movies) but there are more than a handful of incredible, gaming-inspired films out there too. As gaming has grown in prevalence, so too has the wonderful world of gaming movies, giving us plenty of films to both laugh at when it goes wrong and cherish when done right.
Today, we will take a look at many of the most notable gaming-inspired films, going over the flops, the hits and the in-betweens. Let’s get straight into it.

Joker: Folie À Deux had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last week, and reactions were about as mixed as you'd expect after the critical response to Todd Phillips' first film.
Though the movie initially hit Rotten Tomatoes with 59%, it has since risen to "Fresh" status with 61% based on 44 reviews.
Audiences will get to make their own minds up when the musical crime drama arrives in theaters next month, but for now, Warner Bros. has released a new teaser to coincide with the news that tickets are officially on sale.
In what will likely be the final trailer, we see Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) being interviewed by Steve Coogan's character, who asks his subject what's changed in the two years since he brutally murdered Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) live on air. Arthur replies that he's "not alone any more," as we see shots of Lady Gaga...

Robert De Niro and Steve Buscemi were among the Hollywood stars who took part in Sunday’s “Paisans for Kamala,” a livestream featuring prominent Italian Americans hoping to drum up support and donations for the Harris-Walz presidential campaign.
De Niro kicked off the event — hosted by comedian Paul Mecurio, former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and former Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor Joseph Paolino Jr. — by saying he’s hopeful that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will win the 2024 presidential election but warned that their supporters should not get complacent.
“I’m very optimistic about it all,” he said. “I’m very excited, but to me, it ain’t over till it’s over. So we can’t for one second think that we’re ahead of this thing. We just have to be on it all the time until the very end because they’re going to try everything when the election day comes.

Samuel L. Jackson teamed up with Ryan Reynolds on the 2017 movie The Hitman’s Bodyguard. During one critical scene in the film, Reynolds might’ve adlibbed a line that called out Jackson for his signature catchphrase.

Very few actors curse in their films like Jackson. The star’s signature catchphrase in his features, “Motherf***er,” has become just as famous as he is. But it’s a reputation the Star Wars star has great pride in. And it seems Reynolds ended up poking fun at Jackson for his constant swearing in Hitman’s Bodyguard. There’s a line in the thriller where Reynolds’ character accuses Jackson of ruining the word motherf***er. Jackson was uncertain that this piece of dialogue was in the script.
“I’m not sure. But it probably was. It does sound like an adlib.

Amy Adams’ newest film “Nightbitch” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday. The movie tells the strange story of a mother who believes she may be transforming into a dog. Director Marielle Heller based the movie on Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel of the same name.
Adams plays an unnamed mother who pauses her artistic career to take care of her young son. Two years into motherhood, she starts experiencing a bizarre change in her body. The film implies she could be turning into a dog, an idea that made some audience members laugh while making others feel uncomfortable.
During a question and answer session after the film, Adams talked about its central themes. She said motherhood can be an isolating experience even though it’s something many people share. Adams was happy to help tell a story about this important transition and open it up for discussion.

While Jennifer Lawrence has been under the radar in the recent past, the actress was the ‘it girl’ of Hollywood in the 2010s as she starred in multiple acclaimed films and blockbusters. Gaining global stardom due to her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games franchise. She was also the highest-paid actress in 2014.
In 2013, Lawrence reportedly achieved a rare feat. While she earned critical acclaim for her role in Silver Linings Playbook and won the Oscar for Best Actress, she also headlined the year’s highest-grossing domestic release The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The only other actor to do this was reportedly Tom Hanks in 1995 with Toy Story and Forrest Gump.

While his films have ranged from the sublime to the atrocious, there’s no denying the impact Brian De Palma has had on cinema. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
De Palma began his filmmaking career directing underground features shot on a shoestring, many of which starred a young Robert De Niro. He came into his own with the Hitchcock-inspired thriller “Sisters” (1973), starring Margot Kidder as a pair of killer Siamese twins. The Master of Suspense would serve as a muse to De Palma throughout his career, influencing such films as “Obsession” (1976), “Dressed to Kill” (1980), “Blow Out” (1980) and “Body Double” (1984) both in style and substance.
He enjoyed his first box office success with “Carrie” (1976), an adaptation of Stephen King’s chilling novel about a shy teenager (Sissy Spacek) with telekinesis. The film brought Oscar nominations to Spacek and Piper Laurie...

Aside from members of the “eight-year-olds who have been abandoned by their parents at Christmastime” community, pretty much everybody loves Catherine O’Hara. Now the Schitt’s Creek star is appearing in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, reprising her role as Delia Deetz, aka the most unfairly maligned artist of our time.
Arguably one of O’Hara’s most underrated performances can be found in an existential black comedy directed by legendary filmmaker, and archenemy of YouTube Marvel bros everywhere, Martin Scorsese.
If you haven’t seen it, 1985’s After Hours is about a horny nine-to-fiver who just can’t find his way home following a late-night date that goes disastrously wrong. O’Hara plays a Mister Softee ice cream truck driver who befriends the doomed protagonist, Paul, before quickly turning on him and leading the vigilante mob hell-bent on taking him down.
How did one of Canada’s greatest comedy stars connect with the director of Raging Bull?...

The review embargo for Joker: Folie À Deux lifted yesterday and it was clear that critics were mixed on the DC sequel. Several hours later, a Rotten Tomatoes score was generated: 59%.
That put the movie in "Rotten" territory and left it with a dreaded green splat. It's not as if 2019's Joker was a critical darling at 69%, but this still came as a blow given the hype surrounding this musical follow-up starring Lady Gaga.
Now, though, there's been a small change as, with a total of 43 reviews counted, it's risen to a "Fresh" 60%. How long it will be able to maintain that is unclear as we expect at least a couple hundred more verdicts to be added to the current total in the weeks ahead.
On Metacritic, the movie has 54/100 based on 23 critic reviews.
Despite Joker's mixed reviews, it still received mainstream award attention and won Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar...

Juliette Lewis has a very good reason why her horseback ridings skills are so impressive in her new thriller, “The Thicket.”
“I’m a third-place ribbon barrel racer,” Lewis says on this week’s episode of “Just for Variety.” “I was an equestrian. I grew up riding horses before I was 12. So the first thing we did in Calgary [where the movie was shot in the dead of winter] was get on a horse. They wanted to check us out, how you rode. I got a very good rating with my horse riding.”
In the Elliott Lester-directed movie (in theaters Sept. 6), based on Joe R. Lansdale’s book of the same name, Lewis plays Cut Throat Bill, a violent hardened outlaw at the turn of the 20th century who kidnaps a young girl (Esmé Creed-Miles ). The girl’s brother (Levon Hawke) hires a bounty hunter (Peter Dinklage) to rescue his sister.

The auteur leads the latest campaign for streetwear brand Kith, which famously selects iconic stars such as Willem Dafoe and Steve Buscemi to lead their ads. Think Skims level marketing genius, but even Kim Kardashian can’t top anything with Scorsese starring.
The “Killers of the Flower Moon” director appears in the debut ad for Kith for Giorgio Armani, marking the first-ever collaboration in Giorgio Armani’s history.
“Through his revolutionary and era-defining work in cinema, Mr. Scorsese is an artistic icon,” the official release reads. “He is also a longtime friend of Mr. Armani, which led him to direct ‘Made in Milan’ — a documentary about the designer’s life and the growth of the brand. His steadfast representation of his hometown, New York, is a value shared and respected by fellow native, Ronnie Fieg. For these reasons and more,...

Picture this: Martin Scorsese, the maestro of cinematic masterpieces, might never have crossed paths with the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio if it weren’t for one fateful recommendation. And who do we have to thank for this game-changing connection? None other than Robert De Niro. Yep, the legendary actor casually nudged Scorsese toward a rising star, sparking one of the greatest actor-director collaborations in Hollywood history.

It’s like finding a hidden gem because your cool older cousin gave you a tip. Without De Niro’s keen eye, we might’ve missed out on the magic of DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, and more. A simple suggestion turned into cinematic gold.

There’s a great supporting cast and a barnstorming first act but Todd Phillips’s much-hyped Gotham sequel proves claustrophobic and repetitive
Five years ago, Todd Phillips released his much-acclaimed take on the DC Comics supervillain, Joker, with Joaquin Phoenix wearing the clown makeup as the bananas Pagliacci Arthur Fleck in an odd pastiche Scorsese thriller with Joker as both Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin – and granted the unearned honour of killing a character played by Robert De Niro.
I found it bizarrely overpraised and overrated by saucer-eyed pundits, but it became a prize-winning sensation – and perpetuated the awards-season tradition of rewarding the idea of comedy on the strict understanding that it’s not supposed to be funny.

Why Gena Rowlands’ Performance in ‘A Woman Under the Influence’ Is One of Cinema’s All-Time Greatest
When Gena Rowlands passed away last month at the age of 94, New Yorker critic Richard Brody referred to her as the greatest artist of all the actresses he had ever seen onscreen. It’s an assertion that might come across as hyperbole to someone who had never seen Rowlands’ collaborations with her husband John Cassavetes on “Faces,” “Minnie and Moskowitz,” “A Woman Under the Influence,” “Opening Night,” “Gloria,” and “Love Streams,” but even a cursory viewing of any of those performances quickly validates Brody’s claim. And while Rowlands’ work with Cassavetes is her most exalted (and properly so), she achieved great depths of emotional expression for other filmmakers like Woody Allen (“Another Woman”), Paul Schrader (“Light of Day”) and Paul Mazursky (“Tempest”) — not to mention her son Nick, who cast her in a beautiful late-career role in his tearjerker “The Notebook.”
