When putting together a list of the 25 Best Alfred Hitchcock Movies, it’s like plunging into a spectacular alternate universe of wit, verve, and style. The director of “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “North by Northwest,” and “Psycho” has a body of work so deep there are endless ways you can parse it: Maybe you could focus on his obsession with mothers, his approach to time, or the way food and painting pop up throughout his films.
But on a basic level, you also run into a challenge with Hitchcock you face with few other filmmakers, full-stop: The Master of Suspense is one of the rare directors to have a filmography with both the volume and the quality to credibly field a Top 25. With what other filmmakers can you do that? John Ford, certainly (Ford had the most films in our recent list of the 100 Greatest Westerns). Godard or Fassbinder perhaps? They...

Dynasty had the good fortune of premiering as Dallas had triggered a resurgence in the evening soap opera television genre. Premiering in January 1981 — just a few months after the “Who Shot J.R.?” cliffhanger was resolved — the show wound up lasting nine seasons, produced 220 episodes, and even spawned a spinoff series. John Forsythe was the show’s anchor — as oil magnate Blake Carrington, he was the only actor to appear in every single episode of the show’s run. While Forsythe had been around Hollywood since the 1940s and had experienced great success as the voice of “Charlie” on Charlie’s Angels. Before his death in 2010 we spoke with Forsythe several times over the years and even with all of his Hollywood experience, he told us he couldn’t believe how successful Dynasty would become. Did you know that Alfred Hitchcock made a film starring Shirley MacLaine and John Forsythe? Did you know he made a broad comedy? Did you know he shot an entire film in Craftsbury, Vermont?! Well, I guess the last one isn't so shocking. And "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", Hitchcock's Carole Lombard-starring screwball comedy from 1941, is quite well-known and liked.
But I'm not talking about "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." I'm talking about the other comedy made by the master of suspense. 1955's "The Trouble With Harry" represented several firsts for Hitchcock -- his first dark comedy, the first film he made after obtaining American citizenship (he had been living and working in the country for 16 years by that point), and the first film he made after commencing production on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." That series quickly became popular with audiences and was cemented in short order as an American institution,...

When listening to Danny Elfman's score for Richard Donner's "Scrooged," the 1988 black comedy rendition of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," one might get the impression that it was initially supposed to be a horror movie. Indeed, the tone of "Scrooged" is terrifying. The Marley character, played by John Forsythe, is a desiccated corpse with strips of mummified fleshing dropping off of him. The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come is a nine-foot-tall cloak stuffed with the souls of the damned. In a surprisingly tragic scene, the Ebenezer Scrooge character -- named Frank Cross and played with his usual a-hole-ish charm by Bill Murray -- faces the frozen corpse of a homeless man in the sewer. It seems that Christmas Eve is not a cheery time for everyone.
"Scrooged" is bleak, terrifying, weird, and utterly hilarious. Frank Cross is a brilliant updating of the Scrooge character, as Dickens' famous...

Charlie’s Angels and its cast was a phenomenon in the 1970s. The TV series ran for five seasons from 1976-1981. It was produced by Aaron Spelling, who also created hits such as The Love Boat, Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210, and Melrose Place.
The show was immensely popular with viewers but got mixed reviews from critics. Some called it “Jiggle TV” because it emphasized the sex appeal of its female cast.

NBC network dominated the 35th annual Primetime Emmys, with a groundbreaking drama continuing a winning streak, a little-watched sitcom making its name known and another sitcom proving the network might have cancelled it too soon. Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers hosted the event on September 25, 1983. Rivers claimed she had waited nine years for an invitation to the Emmys, and would be wearing every dress she owed (which ended up being nine), and Murphy was excited about his first nomination. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1983.
Two years prior, a little police drama had debuted, changing television with its realism and continuing storylines involving the personal lives of the characters. “Hill Street Blues” not only dominated the Nielsen ratings, but it won numerous Emmys throughout its run. This year would mark its third of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories, winning over “Cagney & Lacey,” “Fame,” “Magnum, P.I.” and “St. Elsewhere.

Dynasty was the quintessential ’80s primetime soap opera. Millions tuned in weekly to see the glitz, the glamour, the backstabbing, and the shoulder pads. ABC aired the series from 1981 to 1989. It was so popular that music icon Prince mentioned it in his song “Kiss.” The lyrics, “You don’t have to watch Dynasty to have an attitude,” were a sign of the times. The nighttime soap earned a Golden Globe nomination yearly from 1981 to 1986, winning in 1983. And in 2017, The CW revived the series with a new cast. So, which original Dynasty cast members are still alive?

Richard Donner’s Scrooged is an unassailable holiday classic. If you’re channel surfing on Christmas Eve, you’re all but guaranteed to run into this film at some point. While versions of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol are a dime a dozen at Christmas time, Scrooged is different. A spoof of the classic tale that swaps Victorian-era London for a 1980s Yuppie-filled NYC, Bill Murray stars as Frank Cross, the meanest TV exec in the business. When not producing fare like “The Night the Reindeer Died” (with Lee Majors – the Six Million Dollar Man!), he torments his employees, including Alfie Woodard as his Bob Cratchit stand-in, Grace Cooley and Bobcat Goldthwait’s Elliot Loudermilk. But, of course, Cross wasn’t always a miser, with Karen Allen’s Claire Philips reminding him of the gentle guy he used to be.

Emmy voters certainly didn’t spread the wealth around with the 2022 nominations. Five of the seven supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie went to HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Four of the six guest actor in a drama series noms were nabbed by HBO’s “Succession.” And HBO Max’s “Hacks” scored four of the six guest actress in a comedy series nominations.
But multiple nominations in one category isn’t anything new in the Emmy universe. In fact, Emmy history was made 40 years ago when NBC’s landmark police procedural drama “Hill Street Blues” earned all five nominations for supporting actor in a drama series. Michael Conrad won his second consecutive Emmy as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus, who would end the morning roll call meetings with “Let’s be careful out there.” Conrad faced competition from the series’ Taurean Blacque, Charles Haid, Michael Warren and Bruce Weitz.

It was a night of record-making firsts and honoring legends from Hollywood’s Golden Era. John Sturges’ orbital jeopardy thriller does everything right: the story is taken seriously, the actors seem committed and the special effects aren’t bad. Yet it’s more interesting for what doesn’t work than what does. As one of the first Sci-fi pictures in the wake of 2001 it wasn’t well received despite being technically astute. Did NASA’s race to the Moon put an end to fanciful space Sci-fi? Gregory Peck, Gene Hackman, Lee Grant and some ex- TV actors do their best, but producer Mike Frankovich’s space saga just sits there. It looks great in its first Blu-ray release: images of the actual Apollo 11 launch are breathtaking.

Showbiz dynamo Ann-Margret tries on ‘teenage hellion’ for size. She terrorizes the straight, impossibly patient John Forsythe, sending him on a weekend ordeal with razor-wielding hooligans. He can kiss both his marriage and his political ambitions goodbye: who will believe David when Jody claims he took advantage of her? Douglas Heyes’ sordid suspense thriller has a loser reputation but is big fun in the star-watching game: Ann-Margret has no choice but to go way over the top and chew scenery, and the direction doesn’t offer enough support. The technical remaster is excellent, and the disc extras generous.

Being photographed in black and white doesn’t deter Ann-Margret, even in monochrome the fiery redhead is a dazzling distraction. And when this kitten gets her claws in the blandly handsome politico played by John Forsythe, it’s a match made in pulp heaven. Director Douglas Heyes’s sexed-up Jd film has a well-deserved reputation for being over the top but with Ann working overtime as a hot-to-trot pyromaniac, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

John Sturges’ first color western is a tightly organized and unpretentious winner about a stern Union prison warden and a Confederate prisoner teaming up to fight an Apache enemy … wait, that sounds familiar. William Holden and Eleanor Parker strike sparks out on the ruddy mesas, while Sturges has a field day with the amazing Death Valley scenery and a highly original action scene. ‘Realistic escapism?’ It’s like a formula for future action cinema. And the ads didn’t let us forget: it all looks sensational in glowing Ansco Color.

In the lead up to the announcement of this year’s Golden Globe nominations, we at Gold Derby were forecasting that the Hulu series, “Ramy,” would pick up three nominations. We thought creator and star, Ramy Yousef, would be back in the Best TV Comedy Actor category after winning it last year as well as getting nominations for Best Comedy Series and Best TV Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. In the end, only Yousef scored a nomination (and a corresponding nom at SAG the following day), but he could still end up pulling off a repeat win here for a couple of reasons.
SEEWhen are the Golden Globe Awards? Everything to know about the 2021 Golden Globes
The biggest reason not to count out Yousef is because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves to have repeat winners on the Musical/Comedy side of their television awards. In total, 16 performers have won...

At the upcoming Golde Globes, a TV series about a disastrous futuristic space cruise around Jupiter and an inclusive film adaptation of Charles Dickens’s 19th-century set “David Copperfield” both hope to compete for comedy trophies. Though they share little in common on the surface, “Avenue 5” and “The Personal History of David Copperfield” both hail from satirical mastermind Armando Iannucci. The Emmy-winning writer and director was behind the films “In The Loop” and “The Death of Stalin” and TV series “The Thick of It” and “Veep,” and his latest works could impressively score both TV and film nominations this year.
Though Iannucci has no Globes to his name, his TV brainchild “Veep” scored seven bids over its seven-season run, including five for star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and two for Best Comedy Series. Although his features have had success elsewhere — “In the Loop” scored a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination for Iannucci and his co-writers,...

In 2013, HBO rolled out its most award-winning TV Movie of all-time. “Behind the Candelabra,” an aptly extravagant biopic on the turbulent late-’70s romance between iconic singer Liberace and his young lover Scott Thorson, featured bonafide movie stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon being directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh. The $23 million production from HBO Films debuted to raves at the Cannes Film Festival before premiering on HBO just five days later. In a few months, it would go on to win 11 Emmys, including trophies for Outstanding TV Movie, Lead Actor for Douglas, and Director for Soderbergh.
No HBO film has been more highly decorated.
Later this year, Steven Soderbergh will release another film that could easily be mistaken for a TV Movie. Premiering via a HBO’s sister platform, HBO Max, “Let Them All Talk” is an original story about a celebrated author who takes a healing trip with old...

Despite its grammatically incorrect title, The Lives of a Bengal Lancer is considered one of the great old-school Hollywood epic adventure movies, and it remains so to this day. It was released very early in 1935 after a long gestation period and became one of the most popular pictures of the decade. It was nominated for the Oscar Best Picture, Best Director (Henry Hathaway), Best Adapted Screenplay, and four other awards, but it won only one—Best Assistant Director? (Obviously a now defunct category.)
What are Bengal Lancers, you ask? They were British soldiers serving in India in those days of the British Raj between the two world wars. Apparently, one didn’t have to be British to serve. The protagonist, Lieutenant Alan McGregor (Gary Cooper), is Scottish-Canadian. Lieutenant John Forsythe (Franchot Tone) seems to be American, but maybe the actor...

The auditions for the role of Callen's action-hero girlfriend continues.
CIA Officer Veronica Stephens returned on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11 Episode 12 after getting in a real fix.
The CIA owed Hetty a favor after she helped out with that mess in Cuba on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 10 Episode 22.
You remember, the episode in which Anna decided to stay in Havana, since she had been declared persona non grata, and left Callen's life, at least for a time.
Anyway, when Hetty asked the CIA to smuggle a Nigerian agricultural engineer into the country (why not?), Veronica drew the assignment.
And bungled it, losing track of the engineer after getting him to Los Angeles.
Veronica also got attacked on the way to paddleboarding by a man with a syringe.
Since Hetty (herself an expert at disappearing) was once again unavailable, she tricked Veronica and her team into working together.
This season, Linda Hunt...

Peter Larkin, whose innovative set design graced Broadway productions and major films, died Monday at his home in Bridgehampton, New York after a brief illness. He was 93 years old and his death was confirmed by his stepson, screenwriter Wesley Strick.
Larkin won four Tony Awards and was behind the set design for such Broadway productions as Peter Pan, The Teahouse of the August Moon and No Time for Sergeants. His film resume was equally impressive, including Tootsie and Get Shorty.
Born in Massachusetts and raised in Boston by Pulitzer Prize winning historian Oliver Waterman Larkin, he attended Yale.
Larkin’s Broadway debut came with Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck in 1951. That led to his big break, the Broadway show of Peter Pan with actress Mary Martin. The show was so successful it immediately went to television within five months, setting a television record for the time with 65 million viewers.

Emmy- and Oscar-nominated, Golden Globe and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Diahann Carroll has died at the age of 84.
Susan Kay, Carroll’s daughter, told The Associated Press her mother passed away from cancer on Friday. Originally diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer in 1997, Carroll frequently spoke out about the importance of early cancer detection, free screening for those who couldn’t afford mammograms, and the need for more money to be invested in research.
Born “Carol Diahann Johnson” in the Bronx, at 10 years old the musically-gifted Carroll received a scholarship from the Metropolitan Opera to study at New York’s High School of Music and Art. She went with the stage name “Diahann Carroll” at a friend’s suggestion to sound more exotic during auditioning for a spot on the “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” TV show. A spot she won—which also allowed her to perform on the daily radio show.

With a Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Drama win tonight for her killer Killing Eve stint, Sandra Oh scored Golden Globes history.
Giving an emotional thank you to her in attendance parents and already a winner at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ceremony back in 2006 for Best Supporting Actress for Grey’s Anatomy, Oh is now the first performer of Asian heritage to win more than one Golden Globes. The Canadian-born actress shattered one barrier even before tonight’s show started with the announcement last year that she would be co-hosting with Andy Samberg. Oh is the first person of Asian decent to ever host the event.
For her performance as the MI5 officer on the hunt for a female assassin piling up bodies all over Europe, Oh is the second women of Asian background to win the Best Actress Golden Globe. Back in 1981 at the 38th Globes,...

Sandra Oh took home her second Golden Globe on Sunday night and is now the second woman of Asian descent to win the Best TV Drama Actress.
The “Killing Eve” star and Globes co-host joins Yoko Shimada as the only Asian women to win the category. Shimada prevailed in 1981 for her performance in the miniseries “Shōgun,” for which she was Emmy-nominated on the limited series/TV movie side. (The Globes didn’t add acting categories for miniseries and TV films until 1982.) Shimada was the first Asian performer, male or female, to win in any acting category at the Globes.

Four more performers of Asian descent have since won Globes. Ben Kingsley, who’s British-Indian, took home Best Drama Actor and the now-defunct Best New Actor in 1983 for “Gandhi.” Haing S. Ngor, the Cambodian physician-turned-actor, was named Best Supporting Actor in...

Sandra Oh is indeed the hostess with the mostest now that she’s snagged her own Golden Globe during the same ceremony she played co-hosted with Andy Samberg. The actress took home the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series on Sunday night for starring as tenacious MI5 agent Eve Polastri in BBC America’s thriller “Killing Eve.” Oh brought dogged determination and dry wit to Eve, which not only made her a fascinating character, but also created palpable chemistry with her co-star Jodie Comer as the assassin Villanelle. “Killing Eve” returns for its second season on April 7.
This win makes up for her Emmys disappointment and makes Oh — who is Korean-Canadian — the first Asian performer ever to win multiple Golden Globes. Previously, she’d snagged only one Golden Globe in 2005 for her scene-stealing role as Cristina Yang on “Grey’s Anatomy,” a baffling statistic since she was on the show for 10 seasons.

It’s a good day to be Sandra Oh, and it could get so much better come January 6. On Friday, the day after she was announced as the Golden Globes co-host alongside “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Andy Samberg, Oh received a nomination in the Best TV Drama Actress category for her lead role on “Killing Eve.”
The timing of the two back-to-back announcements feels particularly fortuitous, and Oh is currently the odds-on favorite to win in that category, just edging out Julia Roberts in Amazon’s “Homecoming.” Oh has received acclaim for playing the dogged and quirky MI5 agent Eve Polastri in the BBC America series from “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and even received a groundbreaking Emmy nomination this year. She ultimately lost out to Claire Foy for “The Crown.”

After presenting together at the Primetime Emmy Awards in September, Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg are getting an awards show promotion: They will host the 76th Golden Globe Awards next month.
“Sandra and Andy are the perfect choices to host this world-class event,” Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, co-chairmen, NBC Entertainment, said in a statement Wednesday. “They bring wit, charm and style to a room filled with the very best of film and television. It’s sure to be another unforgettable fun-filled night.”
Oh and Samberg, who did a bit while presenting Best Comedy Directing at the Emmys, are both Golden Globe winners themselves; Oh won for her supporting turn in 2006 for “Grey’s Anatomy” and Samberg won Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor in 2014 for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which also won Best Comedy/Musical Series that year. Oh is in contention this year for her BBC America hit “Killing Eve,” which...

Last year Sterling K. Brown went on an awards sweep for NBC’s “This Is Us,” taking home the Emmy, SAG Award and Golden Globe for his role as family man Randall Pearson. With the Golden Globe nominations just around the corner, Brown is predicted to hear his name called again for Best TV Drama Actor, but he’ll likely be joined this year by co-star Milo Ventimiglia. Amazing, Ventimiglia has yet to be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association despite starring in everything from “Gilmore Girls” to “Heroes.” Might this finally be his year?
See A ‘This Is Us’ Golden Globes snub might yield another broadcast-less Best Drama Series lineup
Ventimiglia portrays Randall’s adoptive father Jack Pearson on NBC’s family drama, with much of the first half of Season 3 focusing on his early courtship with Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and exploring his service during Vietnam. Since the...
