PBS and the BBC are combining on a landmark documentary series about the rise and fall of disco, while the BBC has revealed its Christmas schedule including new natural history commissions.
Disco Inferno: The Sound of the Underground (w/t) is the latest co-commission for the U.S. and British pubcaster and will be produced by BBC Studios.
Exploring disco’s continuing musical and cultural legacy, the three-parter will “bring the overlooked pioneers together to tell a powerful, new revisionist history of the disco age,” according to the BBC.
The show will start in the 1970s when the pioneering social movement began and move through the years, showcasing archive footage and tracks from down the decades.
It is the first revealed commission for Jonathan Rothery, who the BBC hired from Channel 4 as its first Head of Pop Music TV, and Rothery said Disco Inferno will “highlight many new or untold stories of the genre.

The BBC Factual department has unveiled a vast slate including a natural history series following four animal families over four years and shows commemorating the 40th anniversaries of the Falklands War and AIDS crisis.
At an event yesterday in London, Fiona Campbell, Acting Head of Factual, Arts and Classical Music, unveiled Kingdom, which will follow leopards, hyenas, wild dogs and lions and was described as “one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken” by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit (Nhu).
Filmed in Zambia, the show is a co-production with BBC America and is similar in scope to 2019’s Dynasties, which followed five royal families of the animal kingdom.
“With more time in the field than any previous Nhu production, never has a BBC landmark followed a group of characters so intensely over such a long period or spent so much time embedded in a single habitat,” said the BBC.

Wildlife filmmaker Gordon Buchanan had a suspenseful encounter with a polar bear last summer when the animal tried to claw its way into the plexiglass box he was sitting in during filming for a BBC documentary in Arctic Norway.
Now BBC producer Jason Roberts has come under fire for the incident one Norway official described as "disturbing" to the polar bears, according to several media reports.
Roberts and his crew filmed the bear-centric documentary "The Polar Bear Family and Me" in Svalbard, the northernmost part of Norway where polar bears are strictly protected by environmental regulations. The crew followed a polar bear family throughout three seasons.
During filming, a mother polar bear approached the plexiglass cage that held Buchanan, the documentary's host, and attempted to rip open the box for 40 minutes.
After the documentary aired in January, Svalbard District Governor Lars Erik Alfheim noted that the documentary crew broke Norwegian...

Sad news for animal lovers: Hope, a black bear cub whose early life was chronicled in the BBC documentary 'The Bear Family and Me' and Animal Planet's 'Bearwalker of the Northwoods' has been killed by a hunter in Minnesota, according to a report in the BBC.
Hope's birth had been broadcast over the Internet by biologist Lynn Rogers. Later, wildlife filmmaker Gordon Buchanan filmed Hope as she was separated from and eventually reunited with her mother Lily.
It is believed that Hope was shot and killed in an area of Minnesota where hunting bears is legal. Hunters are discouraged from shooting bears who are wearing tracking collars, but Hope was the only member of her family not to be wearing one.

Gary Glitter's last remaining friend has claimed that the former glam rock star needs immediate hospital treatment. Gordon Buchanan, 54, allowed Glitter to stay at his home in Hampshire after he arrived back in the UK on August 22. The disgraced musician had been released from a prison in Vietnam days earlier after serving a sentence for abusing two girls. Glitter decided to leave his friend's home when his hiding place was discovered four days later. Buchanan has not seen him since and is haunted by fears that he will commit suicide. "I'm not sure he's going to live through this. I saw a very distressed person," Buchanan told The Mirror. "A little bit more of a push and I see what people really want, Gary will be in a box.
