- In a bizarre twist of fate in 1983 he suffered a heart attack while starring in a West End play as a man suffering from a heart attack.
- Leading British stage actor with the Bristol Old Vic, the Birmingham Rep and the Old Vic. Formerly studied stage design and fine art at Reading University, where he was also a member of the dramatic society. From 1943-47, he served in RAF Bomber Command, where he performed in amateur dramatics which led him to further pursue acting interests. He made his stage debut in 1947 at Bromley's New Theatre as the front legs of a horse in "Alice In Wonderland".
