Trailer
Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming adult stop-motion anthology special “The House,” produced by U.K.-based Nexus Studios and coming to the streamer on Jan. 14. The special features three unconnected stories which Netflix described as an “eccentric dark comedy” when it was presented at Annecy in June. The stories centers around a single house in three realities, and those who live there. In the trailer, we meet some of the human and animal inhabitants and get a taste of the program’s blood-cooling aesthetics and tone.
The special is loaded with top-tier talent. Chapter one is directed by Belgian auteurs Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels (“This Magnificent Cake!”), Chapter two by Swedish director Niki Lindroth von Bahr (“The Burden”) and Chapter three by Paloma Baeza (“Poles Apart”). The voice cast boasts a start-studded lineup including Mia Goth, Matthew Goode, Claudie Blakley, Mark Heap, Joshua McGuire,...

Jack London’s “White Fang,” the classic story of a wild wolf-dog rendered against the harsh environment of gold-rush Alaska, has spawned a number of cinematic adaptations — a well-regarded 1991 live-action feature starring Ethan Hawke, a 1993 animated series — but it’s in the hands of French animator Alexandre Espigares that the tale comes to its most vivid life. Adapted from London’s novel by a cadre of screenwriters (there are three listed in the film’s official press kit: Dominique Monfery, Philippe Lioret, and Serge Frydman), Espigares’ film captures the essence of London’s hard-knock story while reimagining it for a slightly younger audience (in short, it’s still traumatic, but not traumatic enough to drive away the audience who will also love it so very much).

One of my favorite books as a kid was Jack London’s White Fang. I just absolutely love that story, and I also really enjoy Disney’s 1991 live-action adaptation that starred a young Ethan Hawke.
I’ve now learned from Deadline that there’s an animated adaptation of the novel coming bring Big Beach, who teamed up with the French animation company Superprod and Luxembourg-bassed Bidibul Productions. Big Beach is the production company that brought us Little Miss Sunshine.
The movie is set to be directed by Alexandre Espirages, who won an Academy Award for an animated short film that he made called "Mr. Hublot." The script comes from Dominique Monfery (Tarzan, Hercules), Philippe Lioret, and Serge Frydman.
I have no idea what to expect from this animated film, but I hope that they do the story justice. If for some reason you’ve never read the book or seen the movie,...

The Scapegoat – or, Au bonheur des ogres, in the original French – adapts the first novel of the same name in Daniel Pennac’s popular ‘La Saga Malaussène’ series, making it a very promising crime-comedy to look forward to next year.
The first three posters for the French-language film have made their way online, giving us a look at leading man, Raphaël Personnaz as the series’ eponymous Benjamin Malaussène.
Starring alongside him will be the lovely Bérénice Bejo, the Oscar-nominated star of last year’s success story, The Artist, as well as Emir Kusturica, Thierry Neuvic, Guillaume de Tonquedec, and Mélanie Bernier.
“There is something strange and fishy – some would even say abnormal – about the Malaussène tribe. But if you take a closer look, no one could be happier than this cheerfully chaotic family, even though their mother is usually off on one romantic junket or other, leaving behind a slew...

Présumé Coupable (English title: Guilty)
Directed by Vincent Garenq
Screenplay by Vincent Garenq and Serge Frydman
France. 2011
There are few things which can grip a nation’s passions quite like a striking, controversial and prolonged court case. In some instances, the nature of the crime is what shocks, as in the Canadian case involving B.C. Pig farmer Robert Pickton, who for years preyed on hookers are drug users in Vancouver. Other examples stun for their conclusion, like with the infamous O.J. Simpson trial in the United States. Then come the trials for which both the nature of the crimes and conclusions are overshadowed by the actual process of conviction, a perfect example being the Outreau case in France, which director Vincent Garenq explores in its entirety in Présumé coupable.

Paradis to star in Frydman's 'Colette' film
PARIS -- Victoire Prods. said Wednesday that French pop star-turned-actress Vanessa Paradis will star in Serge Frydman's road movie "Billy and Colette". Paradis will play a woman who is prepared to go to any lengths to have a baby. The film will mark screenwriter Frydman's directorial debut. The budget was not disclosed. The Paris-based production house, which will co-produce the movie, said it has yet to sign a male co-star to play the son of an aging prostitute with whom Paradis journeys through Belgium and Holland -- where the film will be shot starting in January -- in her quest for a child. Frydman has written screenplays for several Patrice Leconte films, including the 1999 hit "The Girl on the Bridge", which also starred Paradis. "Billy and Colette" will be Paradis' second film after a break from acting following the birth of her child with boyfriend Johnny Depp in 1999. She has just finished shooting sci-fi thriller "Atomik Circus: Le Retour de James Bataille," written and directed by brothers Didier and Thierry Poiraud, which will be released next year, her agent said.
