Update, with response statements: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dropped out of the presidential race, sort of, leaving his rocky Independent campaign behind and aligning the iconically Democrat name with the Republican party of Donald Trump.
“In an honest system, I believe that I would have won the election,” he said today, running counter to polls but sounding very Trumpian, with talks of “sham” primaries and a “palace coup” against Joe Biden. He castigated Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris for not yet granting media interviews, a common Republican talking point in recent weeks.
Kennedy didn’t quite end his campaign, but says he’s merely suspending it and will remain on ballots in some battleground states. While at one point insisting quixotically that it’s still possible he might end up in the White House, he also said, “In my heart, I no longer believe I have a...

Kamala Harris leaves Chicago today with energy and enthusiasm that reached a fever pitch on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, something that would have sounded too-good-to-be-true just over a month ago.
Her speech was biographical, centrist and patriotic, with delegates waving small and large flags on the floor of the United Center. That followed other displays of patriotism throughout the evening, including the appearance of members of Congress who are veterans and the occasional chants of “USA! USA!”
“It was the most Republican Democratic Convention we have ever seen,” Ryan Wiggins, chief of staff of The Lincoln Project, the political action group founded by moderates and conservatives to counter Donald Trump. She compared the exuberance to the GOP convention in 1980 in Detroit, where Ronald Reagan was nominated.

Steven Spielberg helped Daniel Day-Lewis score another Oscar win after casting the actor in his critically acclaimed project Lincoln. However, before Day-Lewis, Neeson was heavily sought after for the role. But Neeson quickly had an epiphany that Lincoln wasn’t for him.
How Liam Neeson turned down ‘Lincoln’ Liam Neeson | Kate Green/Getty Images
Neeson almost collaborated with Spielberg again after their Schindler’s List days. The actor was strongly considered to play Abraham Lincoln in the titular feature. But this went beyond just small talks about doing the feature. In a 2010 interview with GQ, Neeson went as far as to read the script for the movie.
“Steven had approached me to play it—f***, it must be ten years ago. Sent me a script, and I was like, ‘God.’ And he told me roughly when he might want to shoot it, so I started researching. I maybe did four years’ worth of research,...

Exclusive: Bryan Cranston is adding a little vocal help to historian Doris Kearns Goodwin’s next book.
Kearns Goodwin is releasing An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s on April 16 and the Breaking Bad star is providing some narration for the audiobook version.
Cranston will read the letters that Doris’s late husband Richard “Dick” Goodwin, a writer and presidential advisor, wrote to family and friends when he was in his twenties.
The book weaves together biography, memoir, and history. It will also feature historic archival recordings from speeches from JFK, Lbj, and Robert Kennedy.
The couple got to know Cranston when he was preparing to star as Lbj in Robert Schenkkan’s play All the Way. They also appeared together on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2018.

“Sic semper tyrannis!” With these words John Wilkes Booth fled Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. after shooting Abraham Lincoln in the head with a 44 caliber derringer on April 14, 1865, altering the course of history and prompting a 12-day manhunt that ended when Sgt. “Churchill said about Fdr that it was like opening your first bottle of champagne to encounter him. There was such sparkle,” says leading presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, executive producer of Fdr, a three-part documentary series about America’s longest-serving — and possibly most effervescent — president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt held office from 1933 until his death in 1945 and famously led the nation out of the Great Depression and toward victory in World War II. The sociable, naturally optimistic Harvard grad comes to life in vivid dramatizations based on letters and diaries. Context is provided by archival footage, interviews with historians and scholars, and prized documents — like a draft of his speech after the Pearl Harbor attack, where he crossed out “world history” and wrote “infamy.” The doc (premiering May 29 on the History Channel) also looks at Fdr’s formative years, including as a spunky young boy in elite Hyde Park, New York.

Franklin D. Roosevelt is one of the most influential presidents in U.S. history: He ended the Great Depression through his radical New Deal programs, some of which are still in use today; led the U.S. through the bulk of WWII; unified the American public in unprecedented ways through his Fireside Chats; was elected four times; and was the first openly disabled president. So, when the History Channel announced the three-part presidential docuseries, Fdr, promising to tell the untold story, expectations were understandably high. Unfortunately, the series, which is co-produced by Bradley Cooper and based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Leadership: In Turbulent Times, fails to meet those expectations.

Get on the phone with Ron Bernstein and he’ll happily share his views on who’s up and down at the studios — and inevitably, he’ll talk about his latest deals. On a recent call, he hyped the Redstone family power saga by James Stewart and Rachel Abrams, “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Hollywood Media Empire”; sure enough, within weeks it sold to producer Steven Paul, who’s developing the juicy Shakespearean drama for television.
Bernstein is Hollywood’s most respected media rights agent. He’s repped the source material for the Coen brothers’ Best Picture winner “No Country for Old Men” (Cormac McCarthy), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (Doris Kearns Goodwin), Danny Boyle’s “Jobs” (Walter Isaacson), and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” (Marie Brenner).

Kevin Costner has landed a new series amid uncertainty surrounding his “Yellowstone” future. The actor will host and executive produce “Kevin Costner’s The West” (working title) for History Channel, the network announced Wednesday. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will also executive produce.
The eight-episode documentary series explores the clichés and myths of the “Wild West” and features various perspectives that “capture the spirit of opportunity, adventure and peril through the diverse, complex characters and untold stories that defined the era and continue to shape our country today.”
“I am in love with history. I love the rich, heroic and harrowing stories of the West. The people and their stories have always held a fascination for me, but there’s an urgency today to put those times and the men and women who we think we know in perspective, in the context of their times, without judgement,” said Costner in a statement.

Tony Kushner has worked with Steven Spielberg a whopping four times on four completely different movies: 2005’s thorny political thriller “Munich;” 2012’s historical biography “Lincoln;” 2021’s epic musical “West Side Story;” and most recently, 2022’s autobiographical “The Fabelmans,” the story of how Steven Spielberg became Steven Spielberg. Only one other screenwriter, David Koepp, has collaborated with the filmmaker as often (and they had a fifth project in pre-production that fell apart at the eleventh hour). Kushner and Spielberg’s ongoing collaboration is perhaps the most important of either artist’s career.
So sitting down with Kushner to talk about “The Fabelmans” and his journey with Spielberg, it was easy to feel intimidated. (One rarely gets to talk to a Pulitzer Prize winner.) But Kushner was warm and open about their collaboration and its difficulties – including where they might be headed next.

Paramount Global’s attempt to sell publisher Simon & Schuster to the owner of Penguin Random House has been blocked, a Washington D.C. judge ordered on Monday. The companies replied that they’re evaluating options and are looking to request an appeal.
“Upon review of the extensive record and careful consideration of the parties’ arguments, the Court finds that the United States has shown that ‘the effect of [the proposed merger] may be substantially to lessen competition’ in the market for the U.S. publishing rights to anticipated top-selling books,” U.S. Circuit Court Judge Florence Y. Pan wrote in a two-page order.
In response to the order, a Penguin Random House rep called the move a “setback” and pledged to appeal. “We strongly disagree with today’s decision, which is an unfortunate setback for readers and authors, and we will immediately request an expedited appeal,...

Acclaimed presidential biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin, who has also exec-produced series on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, is often asked which of those men she wishes could be here today. “In some ways, I think Teddy would be the best,” she says of the 26th president (1901–09). “You need somebody fiery who is fighting for fairness, who could be entertaining. And he had all those clever statements that would be perfect on Twitter.” The two-part special Theodore Roosevelt does justice to the man who gave the White House its name. His journey from sickly, home-schooled son of a beloved New York City philanthropist to relentless leader who once delivered an 84-minute address while bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest is made vivid. Interviews with Goodwin and other historians combine with scripted scenes that star Rufus ...

This weekend we have a holiday and what better way than to fill that extra day with brand new television? Time to catch up, recharge, and maybe watch that new “Theodore Roosevelt” documentary. It’s what America would have wanted. After the break, the new shows keep coming, from a fictionalized account of the Sex Pistols to the return of “The Boys,” to a spinoff of “Nancy Drew” that seems very, very different. It’s almost Too much good TV.

For some reason, out of the crop of new movies headed to Amazon Prime Video this month, many of them are associated with the 1980s. Not just movies from the Me Decade, although there are certainly a handful of classics from the Reagan era, but also movies that feel like they could have been made in that period – including a creature feature about rampaging dragons and a music-world spoof worthy of the Zaz team.
There’s also, of course, one of Steven Spielberg’s most powerful recent films and a 90s staple too. Either way, this month is best enjoyed with solid access to a time machine of your choosing (DeLorean not required but obviously encouraged).

Last week, a very exciting Super Bowl aired, and during that Super Bowl countless commercials for the new “Law & Order” were featured. Usually they are only advertising big shows weeks down the road, but here we are, and here “Law & Order” is. But don’t worry, Dick Wolf’s immortal crime-and-court classic isn’t the only thing to debut this week, with a lengthy new Abraham Lincoln documentary, the latest Tyler Perry-led “Madea” sequel and another few episodes with shambling zombies all coming home.

All of the news networks carried events marking the anniversary of January 6th, albeit with differences in tone and tenor, but by the time of the opinion-heavy primetime hours, there were wildly different characterizations of the significance of attack on the Capitol.
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes opened his how at 8 Pm Et saying that “today we saw on full display the battle over the meaning of this date,” talking of Donald Trump’s “failed coup” as the probably the most infamous event since 9/11.
Fox News’s Tucker Carlson said it was “really just only a riot — maybe just barely,” while he again gave a platform to a theory that the events were a “false flag” operation. He even had on as a guest Sen. Ted Cruz (R-tx), who rather sheepishly said it was “sloppy and it was frankly dumb” to refer to the January 6th riot as a “violent terrorist attack” earlier this week.

Lin-Manuel Miranda introduced a Hamilton cast performance of Dear Theodosia as part of the congressional events marking the first anniversary of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
“We should never take our rights and liberties for granted, but we must remain committed to finding a way forward together,” said Miranda, appearing virtually, along with members of the cast.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cited lyrics from the song: We’ll make it right for you. If we lay a strong enough foundation, we will pass it on to you, and we will give the world to you.
The performance was followed by a discussion with Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden and historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Jon Meacham, both of whom put the January 6th attack and the current political divisions in context with other moments of American history.

Updated, with additional coverage details: The first anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol will be marked by continuous coverage across the broadcast and cable news networks, as reporters and anchors recount the events of that day while sharing plenty of consternation over what has happened since.
The political polarization that has gripped Washington, and much of the country, will be evident by who is expected to participate in commemoration events. Few Republicans are expected, with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate and House Democratic leaders slated to speak at a ceremony Thursday morning.
Former President Donald Trump, whose false claims that the election was stolen from him led his supporters to storm the Capitol, nixed plans to hold a press conference at Mar-a-Lago that would have been a kind of counterprogramming to the D.C. events. While there were reports that Trump’s...

The 2021-2022 TV season officially kicked off Monday, with a new season of “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC, the return of comedies, “NCIS” and the new “NCIS Hawai’i” on CBS, NBC’s new season of “The Voice” and the premiere of drama “Ordinary Joe,” and Fox’s new season bow of “9-1-1” and the launch of freshman drama “The Big Leap.”
Of all those shows, just one made it to a 1.0 rating with adults 18-49: “The Voice.” NBC won the night with a 0.9 rating. But of course, this isn’t news anymore, the massive live+same day ratings erosion has been years in the making, as audience habits change and more competitors flood the marketplace, all competing for viewer eyeballs. “Fall TV” isn’t the end-all, be-all of the television business that it once was, but nonetheless, it’s still a good time as a natural signpost to take the industry temperature.

German media giant Bertelsmann has set a deal with ViacomCBS to acquire publishing unit Simon & Schuster for $2.17 billion in cash.
Bertelsmann, owner of publishing giant Penguin Random House, was seen as a logical contender for Simon & Schuster. ViacomCBS announced its intent to sell the publishing arm earlier this year as part of the company’s post-merger streamlining to focus on content investment.
Simon & Schuster will operate as a separate unit under the Penguin Random House umbrella. Jonathan Karp, president-ceo of Simon & Schuster, and Dennis Eulau, chief operating officer and chief financial officer, will continue to lead the division. The deal is expected to close next year.
ViacomCBS said it would use the proceeds from the sale to pay down debt, fund its dividend and to invest in “strategic growth priorities.” ViacomCBS chief Bob Bakish in March told investors that Simon & Schuster had attracted interest from 25 bidders. Bertelsmann was believed...

Updated with comment by News Corp CEO Robert Thomson:
News Corp. CEO Robert Thomson called the ViacomCBS’s announcement regarding the sale of Simon & Schuster to Bertelsmann as defying “market logic.”
“There is clearly no market logic to a bid of that size – only anti-market logic. Bertelsmann is not just buying a book publisher, but buying market dominance as a book behemoth,” the executive said Wednesday on the nearly 2.2 billion combination of Simon & Schuster with Bertelsmann’s Penguin Random House announced earlier in the day. News Corp.’s owns publisher HarperCollins and was also in the running for Simon & Schuster.
The deal needs regulatory approval.
“Distributors, retailers, authors and readers would be paying for this proposed deal for a very long time to come. This literary leviathan would have 70 percent of the US Literary and General Fiction market. There will certainly be legal books written about this deal, though...

‘The Way I See It’ Review: A Love Letter to Obama Through White House Photographer Pete Souza’s Lens
Every four years, a few months before the presidential election, a batch of strategically timed movies materialize in hopes of engaging voters and influencing the outcome. Some are merely opportunistic, others downright propagandistic, but few have a shelf life past that first Tuesday in November. A warm, softball profile of Pete Souza, who had the unusual honor of serving as official White House photographer for two presidents of opposite parties, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama, “The Way I See It” feels like it could carry on being relevant to audiences for decades to come.
Saving its political agenda for the end, the documentary — which is told through a mix of voiceover, video footage and iconic stills from Souza’s copious photo archives — opens with the image maker’s memories of Obama’s last hours in office. He explains how the transition of power and witnessing the inauguration felt from where he stood,...

There’s a cruel irony to the way Dawn Porter’s “The Way I See It” unfolds: this documentary about presidential photographer Pete Souza, who served as the official shutterbug for both the Reagan and Obama administrations, never quite knows where to focus. The problem is not that Porter, who this year has already given us “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” is unclear on the power of the images she’s following, but that Souza’s work has already filled seven books, innumerable newspaper pages, and one very popular Instagram account, a single film doesn’t seem fit to do it justice. That Souza’s legacy is so caught up in that of Obama’s doesn’t help matters either, and if both Souza and Porter are prone to turning “The Way I See It” into a doc about the former president, well, it’s understandable. It’s not entirely forgivable,...
