Every year we hear the same Christmas songs again and again and again, the playlist seldom changing.
While the supermarkets might stick rigidly to Slade and Wizzard, and the high street coffee shops prefer the gingerbread-and-eggnog stylings of Michael Buble, Norah Jones or the Rat Pack, variation is minimal and certain tracks just will not go away.
You might wonder how much cash the writers of the more ubiquitous seasonal standards squirrel away every year and whether it’s really possible to live on the royalties.
In Nick Hornby’s novel About a Boy (1998), Will Freeman does precisely that, living an agreeably idle bachelor life on the proceeds of a festive single written by his late father.
The truth is, it’s hard to say for sure precisely how much The Pogues or Mariah Carey have coined from their work as the Performing Right Society (Prs) does not reveal the...

Paul Weller’s new solo album On Sunset is out this Friday, but he’s already hard at work on the next one. Despite the music industry grinding to a halt in the wake of Covid-19 — his 2020 tour dates moved to 2021, and his album was pushed back three weeks — the former Jam singer can’t stop conducting the orchestras in his head.
“First of all, I’ve been unemployed for [the first time] in 43 years,” he says. “The tours were all canceled. But I’m trying to be positive. I’ve spent more time with my kids.

Paul Weller fuses New Wave, pop, R&b, and electronic music on his new single, “Earth Beat.” The track finds the former frontman for the Jam and the Style Council singing about feeling hope for a new day with his guest on the song, R&b artist Col3trane. “I feel that Earth beat close to mine,” Weller sings. “I know that Earth beat every time.” The song will appear on Weller’s upcoming LP, On Sunset, which is due out June 12th.

Chicago – Similar in style, structure and ambition to his 2007 kaleidoscopic portrait of Bob Dylan, “I’m Not There,” Todd Haynes’s 1998 effort “Velvet Goldmine,” takes a hallucinogenic trip through the ’70s glam rock period reigned over by David Bowie. Yet instead of centering his tale on Bowie, Haynes explores the era’s impact through the eyes of a haunted observer.
The film is less dramatically satisfying but far more interesting than a straightforward biopic. Jonathan Rhys Meyers’s striking features fit perfectly into the role of Bowie clone Brian Slade, but he remains an enigmatic object of interest and desire throughout the picture. That’s because his life is viewed solely through the perspective of others, as investigative reporter Arthur (Christian Bale) attempts to piece together the mystery of Slade’s whereabouts ten years after the singer faked his own death onstage.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

When AfterElton asked me if I'd be interested in doing a story on full-frontal male nudity in the movies, I said, “Interested? I've been researching it since I was 12!” What prompted the idea is of course the film Shame, which stars Michael Fassbender as a man addicted to sex. When the film debuted at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year it set off a shockwave because of its sexual explicitness, including a much-discussed full-frontal reveal by Fassbender. Add to that the recent flurry of attention that stills of Jonathan Groff's nude scene in Twelve Thirty hitting the Internet generated, and it seems like these days cinema penises are a trending topic.
Everyone from film critics to Freudian analysts to gender theorists has written about male nudity in film. And sorting through the pronouncements on the male gaze and Lacanian mirrors and power inequities between the sexes in Hollywood...

Jonathan Rhys Meyers goes glam in Velvet Goldmine.
Inspired by the story of rocker David Bowie during his “Ziggy Stardust” phase, Todd Haynes’ 1998 music-filled movie drama Velvet Goldmine is the finest narrative film ever made about the glam-rock scene of the early 1970s.
The film follows British journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale, The Fighter) who finds himself examining his own past while he researches an article about the mysterious disappearance of former glam-rock star, Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, From Paris With Love). Learning that Slade may have faked his own death to escape the spotlight, Stuart encounters many colorful people from Slade’s storied past, along with a few others who played a major role in his own coming of age.
Co-starring Ewan McGregor (I Love You Phillip Morris) as an Iggy Pop-like rocker and Toni Collette (TV’s United States of Tara...

And so it came to pass that in October 2008 that the end of the road was in sight for the Tenth Doctor. The edict came from the man himself, David Tennant, speaking via a video link (and inexplicably flanked by two grim-faced reapers of death) at an awards ceremony. Yes, he'd stick around for a clutch of one-off specials but after that he'd be bidding adieu. And so, countless Tennant girly fans wept into their Tenth Doctor action figures. TVs were thrown out of windows. Riots broke out. Well, I exaggerate, but the feeling at the awards megillah was so full of disappointment that you could almost sense that some rogue fan would go up to Tennant and take his award away from him.
Don't forget, by 2008, Tennant was regarded by a good number of fans as one of the most popular Doctors ever, winning Best Doctor polls and earning numerous accolades for his portrayal.

McGregor's Hazy Days On Velvet Goldmine Shoot
Ewan McGregor was left stunned by the outrageous antics on the set of his 1998 film Velvet Goldmine after film bosses allegedly offered drugs and champagne for an explicit orgy scene.
The actor won great acclaim for his role as Curt Wild in the film, playing the lover of Jonathan Rhys Meyers' flamboyant pop star character, Brian Slade.
McGregor reveals the drama's hard-partying scenes were made more authentic after producers provided booze for the cast to indulge in.
He tells Attitude magazine, "There's a scene where we're shooting in this stately home. It was a post-orgy scene or something and I was lying between these two topless girls. I can't remember what it was all about but one guy was leaning against the door just having a soft w**k.
"They put real joints and real champagne there, so everyone was off their t**s, and I remember looking over and going, 'I never saw that before on a set.'"
And the star admits playing a gay part has never been an issue for him: "I never wanted limits in my work. I've played gay or bisexual characters whenever the part grabbed me."...

Ewan McGregor has revealed the cast of Velvet Goldmine were given marijuana and champagne so they would be 'off their t*ts' during filming. The 40-year-old actor - who played singer Kurt Wilde in the film - was stunned by the outrageous antics he witnessed on the set of the movie, which chronicles the life and career of flamboyant pop star Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Myers). In an interview with Attitude magazine, he said: 'There's a scene where we're shooting in this stately home. It was a post-orgy scene or something and I was lying between these two topless girls. Velvet Goldmine
Directed by Todd Haynes
Screenplay by James Lyons & Todd Haynes
USA, 1998
A mishmash of Citizen Kane, Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie, Oscar Wilde and with a little bit of The Wall thrown in for good measure, Velvet Goldmine is science-fiction, fantasy, biopic and time capsule wrapped into one.
Taking its non-chronological structure directly from Kane, Christian Bale plays reporter Arthur Stuart, charged with investigating the whereabouts of glam-rocker Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who infamously staged his own suicide ten years ago and then disappeared from public view.
As with Kane, Stuart becomes a noir investigator of sorts, tracking down the likes of Mandy Slade (Toni Collette), Brian Slade’s ex-wife, and Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor), an Iggy Pop-inspired rock-god.
-
What really sets Goldmine apart from Kane structurally is Stuart’s hidden past – his own involvement in the glam-rock era – which was, and still is, a source of shame.

Here's a great video compliation of 150 famous movie lines and catch-phrases that we've come to know and love over the years. The great thing about movie quotes for film geeks like myself, is that whenever the moment presents itself we can always bust out a movie quote to throw into a conversation for a good laugh.
I will say most of these quotes are obvious, but it's still fun. The video below was created by David Balboa. Enjoy!
Here’s a list of each quote from the video, and who said it, from Balboa's blog Exophrine.
“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!”

- Beetlejuice, being summoned. “They’re heeeere!”
- Poltergeist
- Carol Anne Freeling, notifying her parents of the spirits present “Hey you guys!”

Movie quotes are the currency by which we pay respect to our favorite films. We grab them out of our pockets at the most appropriate, or inappropriate, times, adding our love of a movie to an advancing conversation. Sometimes these quotes are insignificant lines you and your friends hold near to your hearts but, most of the time, these lines are the ones we all know and love. David Balboa, who runs a blog called Exophrine, edited together 150 of lines and catch phrases just like that into one, cool little video. Included are such diverse films as The Princess Bride, Rocky IV, Aliens, Toy Story, Die Hard, Citizen Kane and many more. Check it out, as well as the full rundown of what's in it, after the jump. Thanks to Balboa and his Exophrine blog [1] for this awesome video. And here's the list of each quote, and who said it,...

Brighton On Screen
With the Brighton Rock remake on its way, the Duke Of York's cinema is getting in early with a season of films made in, or with links to, the area. An obvious choice is Quadrophenia, but the more curious should check out odder fare, like The Flesh And Blood Show, directed by former Doy projectionist Peter Walker, the dour thriller Jigsaw and John Mackenzie's Made, a social drama featuring folkie Roy Harper. The centrepiece is Brighton Rock Unseen, a tribute to Graham Greene's original novel and the iconic 1947 movie it spawned.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
I’ve heard my share of great music in movies, bought more than one soundtrack that’s introduced me to a band I’ve grown to love. I’ve heard songs in a context that makes me think of it in a new way. But sometimes, the band I love doesn’t really exist outside the world of the movie. Some bands are too over-the-top, too fabulous, or too truly, truly, truly outrageous to live in the real world. This Top 7 list is dedicated to Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and now Get Him to the Greek.
