Scott Kelly, the astronaut who until recently held the American record for longest spaceflight, spent at least some of his time aboard the Iss thinking about “Breaking Bad.” NASA will set up calls for the astronauts in orbit with interesting people they want to talk to; so, unlike all “Breaking Bad” fans stuck on Earth, Kelly was able to talk with Vince Gilligan and Brian Cranston — and, as it turns out, director/producer Michelle MacLaren, who was in the room and would remember Kelly when she set out to direct the first two episodes of Apple TV+’s “Constellation.”
Brought on as an advisor to the Noomi Rapace thriller, Kelly sat in Zoom meetings with the “Constellation” production team and also traveled to set to help keep even the zero-gravity scenes grounded in reality. He still has his Soyuz re-entry manual, which he gave to the crew, “so when Jo...

Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad is still remembered by fans for being one of the best drama series of all time. Delving into the story of Walter White/Heisenberg, the series saw the chemistry teacher become one of the biggest suppliers of pure crystal meth in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The narrative, comprising a total of 5 seasons, gave viewers some of the goriest, most dramatic scenes of all time. This includes the glorious fifth episode of Season 5, Dead Freight, which saw Walter White and his crew pull off an incredible methylamine raid that they needed to produce well, Crystal Meth.

It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

Constellation is a brand new series launching on Apple TV+, and to mark the occasion we spoke to several of the talents involved in bringing this thought-provoking sci-fi thriller to our screens. To begin we spoke to the duo that is Noomi Rapace and Jonathan Banks, which allowed for us to *finally* ask the latter if he used Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh as a reference point for his depiction of Mike in Breaking Bad.
We also spoke to both James D’Arcy and William Catlett as they speak fondly of their former teachers, both in education and in their careers, with special nods to those who have set them on the path they’re on today. And finally we get into deep conversation with those behind the lens, speaking to both Peter Harness and Michelle MacLaren, as we talk about the parallels between creating art and being on a film or TV set,...

The new Apple TV+ series “Constellation” is a space drama, a category in which its deep-pocketed platform has developed something of a preoccupation. But the show also exemplifies a type of series so recognizable it’s become practically a genre unto itself: a story that calls for the concision of a feature film that’s been stretched out to fill a TV-sized number of episodes.
“Constellation” stars Noomi Rapace as Jo Ericsson, an astronaut who survives a deadly collision at the International Space Station — only to experience disturbing visions back on Earth. The what/why/how of Jo’s experience in orbit could make for a gripping mystery, but creator and sole screenwriter Peter Harness stretches these questions over eight hours, killing their momentum and stretching the show’s worthwhile elements far too thin.

Review: Man, the International Space Station is getting trashed lately. For years, films like Gravity and The Cloverfield Paradox as well as countless others have used the station as the setting for disaster, but this year alone has had more than one project featuring it. First, the horror film I.S.S. made the triumphant existence of a joint space station a thing of terror and now Constellation fills viewers with a sense of foreboding surrounding the orbiting satellite. The resulting series is a psychological thriller that combines elements of horror,...

One of the very first sounds of Apple TV+’s Constellation is a woman’s terrified voice on a cassette tape, insisting in Russian that “the world is the wrong way around.” As statements go, it’s completely impenetrable — what does that mean? — an only more upsetting for it. It is, in short, the perfect way to set the tone for a series that, if nothing else, excels at tapping into the uncanny.
Over the season’s eight hour-long episodes, time goes missing, reflections refuse to do as they’re told, the dead return to life and then vanish again. It’s no wonder astronaut Jo Ericsson (Noomi Rapace) feels so unmoored from the Earth that she’s returned to — and for a while, Constellation runs on the sheer unsettling thrill of watching Jo try to puzzle out what’s really going on. But vibes only go so far when satisfying answers aren’t forthcoming,...

There are few hours of television more heart-poundingly tense than the "Breaking Bad" train robbery episode "Dead Freight." When I saw it for the first time, a relative came home to find me excitedly pacing around the living room, trying to shake off the massive adrenaline rush that came from watching Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) pull off a seamless methylamine heist, only to have the moment undercut by rogue associate Todd's (Jesse Plemons) last-minute decision to murder a child who witnessed the crime. "Dead Freight" was thrilling a decade ago and it's still thrilling today. Somehow, though, I don't think it would've worked as well if it had involved a helicopter and a big vacuum hose.

The TV Academy better call Rhea when Emmy nominations are announced.

Despite the AMC “Breaking Bad” spin-off series airing last summer, it’s eligible for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, where it hopes to finally take home statuettes after being shut out for each of its six seasons.
Last year, Seehorn finally picked up her first nomination for playing Kim Wexler, Saul Goodman’s confidante and wife. Variety reported Seehorn’s team was mulling over a decision on whether to seek lead actress consideration over the past few weeks.

Bob Odenkirk could find himself in the rare Emmy air this year. AMC will submit Odenkirk’s new series, “Lucky Hank,” in comedy categories for this year’s Emmy competition, Variety has confirmed.
Of course, AMC is also submitting the final episodes of Odenkirk’s “Better Call Saul” in the drama fields. Should Odenkirk be nominated in both the best drama actor and best comedy actor races, he would become the first performer in history to be nominated in both genres in the same year.
Several performers have been nominated and even won Emmys as both drama and comedy leads — but never at the same time. It’s a possibility: Odenkirk has been nominated five times in the best drama actor category for “Better Call Saul,” and this will be his final opportunity to compete in that race for “Saul”. Meanwhile, Odenkirk has been known first and foremost as a comedy performer,...

Despite the unpredictability of the last few years, both in Hollywood and beyond, recent years have proven fruitful for female filmmakers. From winning the top awards at the starriest festivals to notching back to back Best Director Oscar winners (for the first time ever for Zhao and Jane Campion) and churning out big-time box office hits, women have been unquestionably on the rise.
Until, perhaps, now. As we do every year, IndieWire is looking ahead at the next two years of studio features directed by women to get a sense of who Hollywood is elevating in still-rarefied spaces. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director.
But it’s hard to deny the power and prestige of directing a big-time movie released by a major studio, even in a world where streaming platforms are making significant inroads into the “blockbuster” space.

Currently, the Andrea Riseborough indie vehicle is certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a 98 percent score. The all-star run of Better Call Saul directors is nearing its conclusion, with Vince Gilligan stepping behind the camera one last time to helm this week’s penultimate episode, following series veterans Thomas Schnauz, Michelle MacLaren and Michael Morris. Only one episode remains, and it was written and directed by Gilligan’s co-creator and longtime Saul showrunner Peter Gould.
Not surprisingly, this week’s Saul was a pivotal episode, jumping around in both time and geography, introducing Kim Wexler’s life as a brunette with bangs in Florida and pushing things toward the series conclusion with a surprising confession and a surprising discovery, featuring guest star Carol Burnett.

[This story contains spoilers for “Nippy,” the July 25 episode of Better Call Saul.]
It’s been nearly nine years since Michelle MacLaren directed the brutal “To’hajiilee” episode of Breaking Bad, the fourth-to-last hour of the Emmy-winning drama.
Apparently, you can’t have a preantepenultimate episode in this world without MacLaren, who returns with this week’s “Nippy.” This is MacLaren’s third Saul episode, following “Mijo” in the first season and “Breathe” in season four, and it’s part of a homestretch that welcomes a string of beloved family members back behind the camera.
After three straight episodes driven by major character deaths and decisions, “Nippy” wildly changes gears for a full installment in the black-and-white Nebraska world of Gene Takovic, the Cinnabon-managing alter ego to Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman. Jumping us forward to the events after Breaking Bad, “Nippy” continues a storyline that had previously been reserved for pre-credit openings to earlier seasons.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 6, Episode 10, “Nippy.”]
At this juncture of “Better Call Saul,” the biggest unanswered question might well be “What does this guy have left to live for?” And that’s not just true of Gene Takovic (Bob Odenkirk), firmly entrenched in his third distinct identity of the show’s run. That question has effectively become a virus spread to everyone now wrapped up in his monochrome Omaha existence. This mustachioed suburban crime savant may not have a proper answer, but as has been his fallback many a time before, money can be a pretty decent temporary substitute.
At long last, “Better Call Saul” gives a resolution of sorts to the cabbie mystery that’s been lurking around the edges for a season-plus. Turns out that the Simpsons fan/minor-league baseball enthusiast did recognize Gene from his Saul days and wants some financial consideration in exchange for his silence.

Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10
Are people capable of change? Are we damned to repeat the same patterns? Are our behaviors hardwired? Can nurture overcome nature? These are the big questions that art, that television series like Better Call Saul, attempt to wrap their arms around. Human nature and the questions about why people do the things they do is a recurring thematic thread for both Better Call Saul and its parent show. It becomes a chief talking point when discussing the storyline of Gene Takavic, Jimmy McGill’s post-Breaking Bad alter ego living in Omaha, Nebraska as the manager of a Cinnabon.
After blowing up his life as Saul Goodman and getting precariously close to cartel business, Gene cannot help the pull he feels toward his former life. Even though he could be discovered at any moment, whisked off to jail or worse,...

[This story contains spoilers for “Fun and Games,” the July 18 episode of Better Call Saul.]
As AMC’s Better Call Saul nears its series finale on Aug. 15, the Breaking Bad prequel has turned its directing reins over to an all-star team of franchise directors, including veteran writer-producer-directors like Thomas Schnauz, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, as well as Breaking Bad favorite Michelle MacLaren.
This week’s episode was directed by Michael Morris, who was behind the camera for the season six premiere, as well as pivotal episodes including “Wexler v. Goodman” and “The Guy for This.” Certainly “Fun and Games,” like “The Guy for This” written by Ann Cherkis, is pivotal.
How pivotal? Well, we’re going to have to see. After two straight episodes featuring the demise of regular characters, “Fun and Games” was casualty-free, but it features key scenes that either will or won’t be series wraps on Rhea Seehorn’s Kim,...

When we finally see Kirby’s (Elisabeth Moss) brutal attack at the hands of Harper (Jamie Bell) in the next-to-last episode of “Shining Girls,” it’s shocking, but also, far less graphic than we might have expected.
Moss, who has directed five episodes of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” went behind the camera to helm the fifth and seventh installments of the AppleTV+ series. (Michelle McLaren directed the first two episodes and Daina Reid helmed the rest.)
The actress, who also executive produced the sci-fi series, tells TheWrap she deliberately chose to show the attack from Kirby’s point of view, which means we never see Harper or the knife. One moment Kirby, then still known as Sharon, is happily walking her dog on the beach at night, still beaming from the news that she’s getting her first solo byline. Then, out of nowhere, she’s on her face in the sand.
