Sometimes, Hollywood makes twin movies around the same time. M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap has a snappy, exciting premise. It feels a little similar to another upcoming thriller. We may never know if one film was trying to copy the other.
M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Trap’ shares a lot with an upcoming horror sequel
Trap is about a serial killer named Cooper (Josh Hartnett) who takes his daughter to a concert by pop sensation Lady Raven (Saleka). Instead of being an inspiring tale about how Ted Bundy could have been a good father, Trap is a thriller where Cooper realizes that the entire pop concert is one big trap where law enforcement is trying to snag him. It’s a tight concept for a movie that fizzles out thanks to implausible dialog, a misguided lead performance, and a mid-movie twist that doesn’t work at all.

When I first saw the title of this, I naturally thought of the song by the same name that became a huge if not ‘Monster Hit’ for Bobby “Boris” Pickett at the height of the fifties and sixties monster craze. The picture takes the theme of sixties creature features and creates a bloody at times gore-filled Anthology of stories to shock, offend and make you go ‘ok’.
The Monster Mash (2022) directed by Kevin Losani and Richard Terrasi succeeds admirably with engaging pulp-like stories whose endings you can see a mile or kilometre off depending on your country. The difference is the work is so lovingly done, with fun, practical effects, at times over-the-top acting that fits and just a little tinge of naughty offence.
The film opens with outstanding titles harkening back to Saturday morning horror cartoons that were never quite frightening. An on-camera host Dr Freudstein (Michael Gentile) and his not-so-able hunchbacked,...

Before Ringo Starr became a Beatles legend, he played cover songs with lesser-known rock musicians. One of his signature tunes back then was a track about a caveman, but not just any caveman: a comic strip caveman. Somehow, this all connects to “Monster Mash.”
Ringo Starr played a song about a caveman to German audiences
In a 2019 Rolling Stone article, Ringo and Nirvana’s Dave Grohl interviewed one another. Grohl asked Ringo if he would sing songs as part of his pre-Beatles bands. “I’d do ‘Watch Your Step,’ and I’d do ‘Alley Oop,'” Ringo replied. “Watch Your Step” is a blues-rock hit by Bobby Parker while “Alley Oop” is a novelty song about the comic strip caveman of the same name. Between “Alley Oop” and The Flintstones, cavemen appeared to be in vogue at that time.
Ringo discussed the reaction to “Alley Oop.” “In Germany, all the...

The countdown to Billy Joel’s last Madison Square Garden concert has begun.
On October 20, the first of Joel’s last ten concerts at Msg kicked off to a nostalgic start as he sang his top hits like “Uptown Girl” and “Piano Man” throughout the show. That Friday, he told his fans he had “bad news” and “good news.”
“The bad news is I don’t have any new songs for you,” he said during the concert. “The good news is you don’t have to sit through songs you didn’t know that you don’t want to hear in the first place.”
Since 2014, the Grammy singer has played one show at Msg every month. The 74-year-old currently holds the most appearances at Msg and is planning to end at 150 shows next year.

Alien vs. Predator. Freddy vs. Jason. Sadako vs. Kayako. Bobby "Boris" Pickett's "Monster Mash."
Throughout horror genre history, there have been numerous examples of characters crossing over into one another's universes, continuity, and canon. While cinematic universes featuring characters from other genres are all the rage these days (especially with regard to action and comic book superheroes), there remains something special about the horror crossover.
For one thing, horror was the first genre to birth a cinematic universe long before it became a buzzworthy term, thanks to Universal Pictures' "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" in 1943. For another, a horror crossover typically isn't like a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, where heroes from their own separate franchises team up to hang out, crack wise, and eventually take on a doomsday villain. Instead, it's all about the thematic weight of not one, but two...

Halloween isn't just for children. That's why whenever scary season rolls around, you need a music playlist that keeps everyone in mind - from the kids who love the latest ghoulish Disney Channel Original Movie musical to those who got down to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" when it first came out in the '80s.
That's also why you have to get creative when it comes to the spooky songs you choose for your Allhallows' Eve playlists. If you only include songs that are explicitly Halloween-themed, like "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers or "This Is Halloween" from "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the tunes could get stale real quick. So remember to work in music that has Halloween vibes, too.
Jimin's "Filter" may not strike you as a Halloween song at first but with lyrics like, "I can be your genie / How about Aladdin? / I'll be...

If you’re a fan of both horror and soundtracks, like me, you know there’s an embarrassment of riches to collect– especially in the current golden age of boutique labels like Waxwork Records and One Way Static. Some of these horror soundtracks are highly uncommon, not because they’re for obscure films or TV series, but because they break the mold in numerous ways.
Read on for some of the most unusual horror soundtracks ever released….
And feel free to add your own oddities in the comments!
Monster In My Pocket (1992)
This might just be the most unusual soundtrack on this list, given that it’s for a toy line! It’s a shame I didn’t pick this up as a kid, because I loved Monster In My Pocket toys and this Halloween-y compilation sounds right up my alley. (I probably would have worn out the cassette playing it year round.

Halloween is the most wonderful time of year for all the ghouls and goblins everywhere. Whether you’re dancing in the light of a full moon or passing out candy to trick-or-treaters, a good soundtrack is a must for your night. Here are 13 songs to add to your Halloween playlist that’ll rock your bones and invoke those spirits for a good time.
Bobby Pickett - "Monster Mash"
A novelty song that has been synonymous with Halloween since it first dropped in 1962, "Monster Mash" has been constantly played on the airwaves ever since Bobby Pickett was inspired to sing a song using his Boris Karloff impression. Some artists tended to be ashamed of their big hit, but not only was Bobby proud of it, he continued to perform this song live until his death in 2007 at the age of 69.

Get ready to do the Monster Mash as Universal Pictures prepares to adapt the camp song classic with their Universal Monsters collection.
I was working in the lab late one night when my eyes beheld an eerie sight, for my monster from his slab began to rise and suddenly, to my surprise, he began to… make a movie musical about the Monster Mash! That’s right big Bobby “Boris” Pickett fans, a novelty Halloween song from 1962 is about to be the basis of the latest iteration of Universal Monsters. Because… why the hell not?
The news, which was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, reveals that Matt Stawski has been tapped to helm and adapt a movie version of the hit song for Universal Pictures, which presumably is going to include all your favorite fanged and furry ghouls. Little else is known about the film other than screenwriter...

In honor of Halloween, YouTube Music has culled the 31 most popular music videos that earned more daily views last Oct. 31 in the U.S. than on any other day of the year in 2018.
The list is topped by unsurprising standards like Ray Parker Jr.’s "Ghostbusters" (the theme song for the cult 1984 film), Michael Jackson’s "Thriller," and Bobby Pickett’s "Monster Mash" -- though it also includes more contemporary hits by artists like Fifth Harmony (whose "I’m In Love With a Monster" placed fifth) and Rihanna’s "Disturbia," which landed at No. 7. Jackson technically has two songs in the top five, given that he provided guest vocals on Rockwell’s "Somebody’s Watching Me," which came in at No. 4.
Not a whole lot has changed since last Halloween -- when "Thriller" took the top spot and "Ghostbusters" was at No. 2. "Monster Mash" has remained steady at No. 3, with...

Featuring original songs from imaginary bands, Sean Keller's The Killer Sounds of Halloween is adding spooky sounds to the Halloween season. Patrick Bromley recently interviewed Keller about his autumnal mixtape, and we now have a look at a new music video for one of the mixtape's tracks, "The Monsters Trick or Treat," directed by Megan Duffy (who recently helmed the killer bride short film Seeing Green).
Directed and edited by Megan Duffy, and starring Sean Keller, John Stiens, and Mike Mendez, The Monsters Trick or Treat is an imagined sequel to the "Monster Mash" and the music video is their homage to Bobby Pickett. The video stars Keller, horror director Mike Mendez, and voiceover actor John Stiens (who also voices all the creatures on the track). Makeup is by Ally McGillicuddy with costumes by Kristin Parker. There must have been something in the water the week of Sept. 18, 1964. That’s when the ghouls-are-us sitcom “The Addams Family” premiered on ABC — and exactly six days later, the ghouls-are-us sitcom “The Munsters” premiered on CBS. True, only one of those shows was based on the sinister genius of Charles Addams (whose first cartoon to feature what would ultimately be known as the Addams Family appeared in The New Yorker in 1937). Yet the two shows shared a remarkably similar trajectory and attitude.
Each one lasted for just two seasons, but together they marked a decisive turn of the entertainment screw, with the shows transforming Old Hollywood horror into gothic-absurdist laugh-track kitsch. You could say that “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” got there first, but that 1948 classic played the monsters straight, whereas “The Addams Family” and “The Munsters,” taking off from the camp spirit (and spirits) of Bobby Pickett’s 1962 novelty hit “Monster Mash,...

James Corden embarked on a one-man mission to humiliate the Beats 1 staff – including Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig – in a hilarious "Take a Break" remote segment for Tuesday's Late Late Show.

Every Halloween, Robert George Pickett rises from the grave. (Figuratively.)
The song that made Pickett famous (three times over), “Monster Mash,” spikes to 40 times its regular view and search volume on YouTube every Halloween, and with good reason. It is a uniquely ripe piece of American cheese, a novelty hit that stands among the best of a decade packed with them, and Pickett’s life — and dogged attempts to keep grabbing the brass ring he glimpsed with the song — represent a uniquely American story.
Pickett was in born in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1938, right in the middle of Universal Studios’ reign atop the horror movie industry.

There are many reasons why Halloween is awesome. No, scratch the last word. It is more than that. It is…haunting! The treats, the tricks, the costumes, and the best part: decorations, decorations, decorations. October 31 is the day people evoke the darkest and spookiest parts of their imaginations without worrying that others may find that a bit too scary because, well, isn’t that what Halloween is all about? And yet, if being scary doesn’t do the work, how about trying something else that will make you stand out from the crowd of zombies, witches, and other dark creatures?

Burn the witch! No wait, it's just Louis Walsh in fancy dress for Halloween with his X Factor act Only the Young.
The ITV show judge made a terrifying Salem witch - but could have been a better Worzel Gummidge - wearing a puritanical-style smock splattered in blood, a witch's hat and mini cauldron.
He also accessorised with a crooked plastic nose and broomstick.
Only the Young - made up of hopefuls Mikey Bromley, Charlie George, Parisa Tarjomani and Betsy-Blue English - took Walsh trick or treating and also allowed Betsy-Blue and Parisa to draw all over his face.
You wouldn't want to open the door to that.
Mikey dressed as a banana, Charlie went as a rotten apple and Betsy-Blue was an egg to Parisa's bacon.

All Hallow's Eve. Fright Night! The Americanisation of British culture continues apace with yet another Halloween special on The X Factor.
As ever, our friends at ITV have published the list of songs to be performed, as well as the artist who performed the version being covered.
Halloween classics 'Bat Out of Hell' and 'Thriller' are of course present and correct. 'Highway To Hell' is also suitably screamy.
'Relight My Fire' is the Take That/Lulu version rather than the Dan Hartman disco classic. We think it's allowed because Hell is fiery and that.
'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)' gets in because of its spooky video, rather than the song itself.
Similarly, we're guessing 'Mad World' gets a pass because of Gary Jules's dark reworking for Richard Kelly's 2001 classic Donnie Darko, but Jay James will apparently be doing the bouncy Tears For Fears original.

Written by Joe Lawson

Wednesday night is shaping up to be the worst night of the week for network television. Week after week the comedies continue to disappoint for a number of different reasons. New shows such as Back in the Game and Super Fun Night struggle to find their footing, some incorporating too much whilst others not enough. This week’s episode of Back in the Game, “The Change Up” returns to the awkward narrative structure we first saw in the pilot and once again it doesn’t work. The biggest problem with the show is that it continues to send the completely wrong message. Each week Terry must overcome sexist male obstacles in order to achieve. When people ask me about horror music, one of the first things that comes to mind is horrorpunk. The sound and look of horrorpunk is bloody, ghoulish, sometimes campy and always fun. One of the most well-known and prolific horrorpunk record labels is the German-based, FiendForce.
We sat down with one of their fearless leaders, Thorston (who also happens to be the singer of the well known horrorpunk band The Other), to talk about the music, the horror, and of course the movies. Please join us, audio zombies, and dont forget to lend an ear to the bloody tracks included below.
Polina: Hello, Thorsten, and thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us about horrorpunk and Fiendforce Records. Can you please tell our readers a little about horrorpunk and its connection to horror movies?
Thorsten: Obviously the whole idea for horrorpunk came from artists and bands like Screaming Jay Hawkins,...

Par digging up 'Monster Mash'
In a pre-emptive bid, Paramount Pictures has picked up the Halloween family/adventure pitch Monster Mash, which Ben Tripp will write for studio-based producer Jordan Kerner. Simultaneously, Paramount has acquired the classic 1962 hit song "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett for use in the film. The project, designed to be both live-action and CGI, takes place on Halloween day and centers on the notion that monsters actually exist, but the only day they can come out without being noticed is Halloween because everyone thinks they are in a costume. This is also the one day when monsters can accomplish all their errands and chores for the entire year. When a 14-year-old boy and his father discover this secret, a wild adventure ensues.
