Tennis may have singles and doubles, but Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers turned it into a three-person sport. The steamy sports drama about a love triangle performed modestly at the box office but blew up on social media, and fans who missed its theatrical run in April can now catch it at home on Prime Video. The film landed on MGM+ on July 29, but it can be streamed on Prime Video today.

Steven Sodebergh loves Steven Spielberg. Maybe it’s just a Steven thing. Or maybe it’s because the latter indirectly changed the course of the former’s life with his breakthrough film, “Jaws.” As revealed in a conversation at the Toronto International Film Festival and covered by The Hollywood Reporter, the “Ocean’s Eleven” director shared further details on a previously announced book that he’s writing about the making of the 1975 shark thriller starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw.
“I’ve been working on this thing [the book] that is ostensibly about directing and uses, as its spine, an analysis of the making of ‘Jaws’; day-to-day,” Soderbergh said.
While this may sound like a thrilling read that could probably be adapted into its own film one day, Soderbergh described it as more of an educational tool than a gripping piece of entertainment.

While the Telluride Film Festival this past Labor Day weekend was a launchpad for many awards contenders having a breakout moment, from Karla Sofía Gascón in “Emilia Pérez” to the co-leads of “The Nickel Boys,” the past three days marking the midpoint of the Venice Film Festival put a spotlight on world premieres for the latest projects from three alumni, featuring a bevy of A-List talent, many of whom already have an Academy Award.
Working backwards, Day 7 of the festival marked the first public screening of the highly anticipated “Queer” from Luca Guadagnino, the director’s eighth film to screen at Venice. The adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novella “Junkie” uses quite a few of his collaborators from “Challengers,” the other film he released this year, which will have its own separate awards campaign, but the Oscars category it has been pegged for from the start is Best Actor for lead Daniel Craig.

The Venice Film Festival showered Luca Guadagnino’s Queer with lots of love Tuesday night at the film’s world premiere. In particular, the capacity crowd inside Sala Grande went wild for star Daniel Craig, who broke away from his James Bond persona for a provocative and challenging role opposite Drew Starkey, who also earned cheers from the capacity crowd that included Pedro Almodóvar.
The Spanish auteur, who is also in the Venice competition with his buzzy drama The Room Next Door, was seated across the row from Guadagnino and his cast. He embraced them one by one during the lengthy standing ovation. Craig looked emotional at several points as his wife, Rachel Weisz, was beaming and hollering in unison with the crowd while standing on her feet.

Labor Day weekend has come and gone, and that can only mean one thing – it’s TIFF time, baby! Once again, I’ll be attending the Toronto International Film Festival on behalf of JoBlo.com. I’m looking forward to getting an early look at some of the prestigious awards fare we’ll all be hearing plenty about in the coming months. Crazy enough, this will be my sixteenth year in a row covering the festival!
Here’s what I’m most excited to check out at this year’s edition:
Conclave:
Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front was one of the biggest surprises of the 2022 edition of TIFF, as that new adaptation of the classic novel/ film proved to be one of the most dazzling war films in recent memory. Spoilers for numerous Pixar films to follow.
For nearly 30 years, going back to its innovative first feature "Toy Story," Pixar has defined excellence in creative and animated storytelling. Its films have been wildly successful at the box office, with "Inside Out 2" recently grossing billions at the box office, and the studio itself has won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature 11 times. Pixar continues to produce feel-good stories that shape childhoods everywhere; yet, for all their warm and fuzzy moments (such as Woody and Buzz becoming friends or Dory speaking whale), what Pixar movies are really, really good at is making us cry — kids and adults alike. So, since we're feeling masochistic, this list ranks the saddest moments in Pixar films.

Bryan Ferry Teams With Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for ‘Star,’ His First Original Song in 10 Years
Bryan Ferry has shared his first original song in nearly a decade with “Star,” a collaboration with singer Amelia Barratt and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
The track, which features on the Roxy Music singer’s upcoming five-disc Retrospective: Selected Recordings, began as a demo the Nin duo sent to Ferry, who in turn teamed with Barratt to turn the sketch into “Star,” with Barrett handling lead vocals on the track:

Bryan Ferry has returned to share a new single called, “Star,” serving as his first new, original song in a decade.
“Star” originally began as a sketch from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and Bryan Ferry recruited painter and writer Amelia Barratt to lend her vocals to the hypnotic, thumping track. Ferry and Barratt share almost every line, muttered in a droll and deadpan way as a contrast to the instrumental’s buoyant groove.
“‘Star’ is a collaboration with the painter and writer Amelia Barratt,” Ferry said about the song in a statement. “A couple of years ago I helped her record an audiobook here in my studio. I was very impressed by her writing, and this is the first song we did together. I’m very excited about this new work — there’s a lot more to come.” Listen to “Star” below.

The 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival officially kicks off on Wednesday with the eyes of the film world focused on the Lido.
Long-running festival director Alberto Barbera and his team have unveiled a star-studded lineup, including possible awards season contenders. But which premieres can’t be missed amid the busy program?
THR‘s chief movie critic David Rooney looked through the selection of the big Italian festival to pick some of the most intriguing prospects.

When Brady Corbet was in Venice at age 16 with Mysterious Skin, instead of flying home with his director Gregg Araki and co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, he stayed on a couple extra days to see the new Claire Denis film, The Intruder. That same cinephile curiosity is evident in the choice of filmmakers with whom he’s worked, among them Michael Haneke, Sean Durkin, Lars von Trier, Olivier Assayas and Mia Hansen-Love. With more than a year until Tron: Ares hits theaters, Jared Leto appears to be homesick for his onscreen digital kingdom.

As he and a friend approached the ride, Leto declared, “We gotta do this, man. Holy s—, I feel like I’m home! … I gotta be in the front, man.”

Brandon Lee’s The Crow soundtrack consisted of a bunch of iconic songs. It was executive produced by Jeff Most, the film’s producer, and Jolene Cherry, the film’s music supervisor. Most insisted that they wanted to create a soundtrack out of original songs and covers, that wasn’t available anywhere else. It was a challenging task at the time when films used established hit songs to make sure that the album would sell.

It was a difficult mission at the time but they managed to convince hard rock and heavy metal bands like Rage Against the Machine, Rollins Band, and Pantera, to create music for the film. The soundtrack had to undergo a few changes after Brandon Lee’s tragic accidental death. Jeff Most later regretted removing one song from the soundtrack during this time.

Halsey has a brand new song out!
The 29-year-old “Lucky” star released her new track, “Lonely is the Muse,” on Thursday (August 15), which is more of a return of the rock sound she explored with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, as well as Bring Me The Horizon.
“I always knew I was a martyr and that Jesus was one too, but I was built from special pieces that I learned how to unscrew / And I can always reassemble to fit perfectly for you or anybody that decides that I’m of use,” she declares on the song, co-written with Stuart Price.

Film at Lincoln Center announced the full slate of Spotlight films for the 62nd New York Film Festival on Wednesday, with several top titles joining the Spotlight Gala screening of “Queer” in the lineup.
Coming to New York this fall will be Jacques Audiard’s Cannes Jury winner “Emilia Perez,” Sundance screenwriting winner “A Real Pain” from director and writer Jesse Eisenberg, and Pablo Larrain’s biopic “Maria” starring Angelina Jolie. All three films are expected to factor heavily in the awards race this year – this assuming “Maria” lands U.S. distribution after it plays the fall festivals.
Those flashy titles join other films such as “Nickel Boys,” “Blitz,” and “The Room Next Door” in the New York Film Festival lineup this year.

The 2024 New York Film Festival (September 27-October 14) has added more to its already-buzzy lineup, with the latest selections in its Spotlight section announced today. The NYFF Spotlight gala this year, as previously named, will be the U.S. premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s Venice competition title “Queer.”

A North American premiere of “Holy Motors” director Leos Carax’s self-reflexive short film collage “It’s Not Me,” which bowed in Cannes, also comes to NYFF this fall. Notably, one more “last film” by Jean-Luc Godard, who died in September 2022, “Scénarios” will play NYFF after screening in Cannes. The Walt Disney Company umbrella is so massive, and encompasses so many characters and franchises, that the definition of a "Disney fan" feels impossible to pin down these days. As I sat in the Honda Arena during this year's D23 fan convention in Anaheim, California, I wondered about the make-up of the audience. How many of them were Marvel folks? How many of them worshipped at the altar of Star Wars? Did some of them still pledge allegiance to good ol' fashioned Disney Animation, with a comparable appreciation for Pixar? And naturally, were there some folks who just loved all of the above?
I consider myself a pretty big fan of many of the characters and worlds that live within the Disney bubble, but I'm also perfectly capable of brushing off the stuff that just isn't for me. So as the evening's two-hour Disney Experiences Showcase panel entered its third hour,...

It will continue pushing boundaries with state-of-the-art visual effects. At D23, attendees got a first look at the film through its debut trailer and announcements about the cast and creative team.
The footage suggested “Tron: Ares” will grapple with timely AI and big tech issues. Stars Jeff Bridges, Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters were on hand to discuss their roles. In the absence of Tron: Legacy’s composers, the legendary Daft Punk, Tron: Ares has turned to Nine Inch Nails instead for its score.
While not everybody was a fan of 2010’s Tron: Legacy, the film certainly hit in one particular regard: its incredible score was the result of what seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime bit of creative coupling. The film, which is of course largely set inside inside a digital world, was scored by Daft Punk, the electronic house duo who spent their decades-long career masquerading as synthetic beings. At least we think it was a masquerade. Who knows, really?
Anyway, the collaboration led to an excellent soundtrack but more than a few impediments lay in the way of Daft Punk returning for a reprise. The duo are now all but retired, at least as Daft Punk, while according to the studio.

At its D23 fan event in Anaheim, California on Friday night, Walt Disney Studios unveiled a first, exclusive look at footage from Tron: Ares, the third entry in what is now officially the Tron film franchise—which wasn’t a foregone conclusion after Tron: Legacy underperformed back in 2010.
Following up on the ending of that film, in which the AI character Quorra (Olivia Wilde) escaped from the Grid into the real world with Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), Tron: Ares is leaning fully in that direction with the Grid itself invading our world through the machinations of the malevolent program known as Ares (Jared Leto).
Leto and fellow cast members Greta Lee and Evan Peters came onto the D23 stage before the footage was shown, joined somewhat surprisingly by Jeff Bridges, the original Kevin Flynn, who arrived first to warm up the crowd. Even more surprisingly, Bridges also shows up at the end of the footage.

Move over, Daft Punk, because Nine Inch Nails is moving closer to the future of the Tron series, with the industrial band landing scoring duties for the upcoming Tron: Ares.
Even though a lot of their music (the Ghosts albums come to mind) can often play like a soundtrack, Nine Inch Nails has done very little work in that realm, having previously only done the music for video game Quake. With Tron: Ares, Nine Inch Nails will finally give us an idea of all that could have ever been.
Even still, Trent Reznor — who was the sole member of Nine Inch Nails since its inception in 1988 until Atticus Ross officially joined in 2004 — has made an incredibly successful transition from the music studio to the movie studio. With Ross, Reznor first won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network, next nabbing it for Soul (alongside Jon Baptiste). They would...

Ever since it was announced that Disney was going back to The Grid for more Tron, fans have been asking the question: who’s going to be on soundtrack duties? One of the most memorable elements of 2010’s Tron: Legacy was its superlative score courtesy of French disco legends Daft Punk – but since the duo disbanded a few years ago, it was always a slim chance that they’d return for Joachim Rønning’s upcoming Tron: Ares. But now we have an official answer as to who's lined up, and it’s a particularly exciting one.
As confirmed at Disney’s D23 Expo, the Ares soundtrack will be coming from none other than Nine Inch Nails – the industrial icons known for blending rock with ear-rattling electronic production. So, perfect for a Tron film, then.

Who's ready for some more biodigital jazz, man? Throughout its 40-plus year existence, the "Tron" franchise has always been a little too far ahead of the curve for its own good. Steven Lisberger's original 1982 "Tron" film was notoriously overlooked by the Academy in spite of its groundbreaking computer-generated visual effects, and even Stan Lee didn't really get what Lisberger was going for. When Joseph Kosinski's "Tron: Legacy" arrived 28 years after that, it similarly pioneered digital de-aging and the legacy sequel formula at a time when neither of those things were in vogue. Nevertheless, the forward-looking sci-fi property has gained a loyal following over the decades, which explains why we're currently awaiting a third movie in the form of "Tron: Ares."
Whereas the original "Tron 3," the canceled "Tron: Ascension," would have been more of a direct continuation of "Legacy," this new film shifts its focus to the eponymous...

Nine Inch Nails will score the upcoming Tron movie, Tron: Ares, Disney announced during its D23 presentation on Friday.

“Tron: Ares” arrives next year, following in the footsteps of 1982’s “Tron” and 2010’s “Tron: Legacy.” And at D23 on Friday the first footage from the movie was revealed. And it is a doozy.
The movie stars Jared Leto as the titular character, a program who escapes the computerized video game world of the Grid for our own world. The footage began with Evan Peters’ Julian Dillinger, who noted on stage, “You know the name Dillinger doesn’t mean great things for those on the Grid. Dillinger is giving a speech about how we are looking for life in the stars but that we should have been looking inside – inside the Grid that is.”
We see Leto crawling into our world. At first you see him looking around but there are more ominous shots – a sequence (maybe a chase?) in the snow, a destroyed downtown area, and Greta Lee, as...

Nine Inch Nails, the band headlined by musician Trent Reznor, is composing the score for Tron: Ares, Disney announced Friday at D23.
The reveal occurred during a first-look at the sci-fi movie that is being headlined by Jared Leto and directed by Joachim Ronning.
And featured some snippets of the score work done so far. The previous installment, Tron: Legacy, had a genre-defining score from Daft Punk, so when it came to the new movie, the bar is set high.
Reznor created Nin in the late 1980s as an industrial hard rock band even though for the albums, it was the Reznor himself who was composing and playing the instruments. However, when Nin toured, the frontman assembled members who rotated in and out. The band was hugely influential in the 1990s and racked up numerous Grammy nominations and a couple of wins for songs “Wish” and “Happiness in Slavery.”

Days after announcing the main slate for this year’s New York Film Festival, the event’s organizers added another highly anticipated feature to its roster.
On Thursday, Film at Lincoln Center announced that Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” will have its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 6 as a spotlight gala. The film is an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s novel of the same name with a script from “Challengers” writer Justin Kuritzkes. Daniel Craig leads the cast with Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Michael Borremans, Andra Ursuta, and filmmaker David Lowery in various supporting roles.
“I am so privileged and elated to present a movie of mine for the third time at NYFF, ‘Queer’ in particular,” said Guadagnino in a statement. “It is a very personal movie about the inescapable quest for being recognized in the gaze of another through the lens of the great William Burroughs.

The New York Film Festival said Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival, making its U.S. premiere.

And mathing the festival math, a U.S. premiere means “Queer” won’t show up at Telluride but should expect to be added to the Toronto International Film Festival lineup for its North American premiere any day now.
The NYFF announcement provides us with a more detailed synopsis for the film: “Written in the early 1950s yet not published until 1985, William S. Burroughs’s ‘Queer’ has come to be considered a canonical work in the career of the Beat Generation author...

In 1991, music manager Perry Farrell assembled an eclectic array of artists for a farewell tour with his band Jane’s Addiction. What began as a send-off soon took on a life of its own. Farrell’s unconventional lineup brought unexpected pairings to stages across North America, exposing fans to new sounds and communities along the way. Audiences embraced this diversity, flocking to shows in growing numbers.
With this enthusiastic response, Farrell realized they were onto something bigger. Lollapalooza became an annual touring festival, curating genres on the fringes of the mainstream. From alternative rockers like Nine Inch Nails to hip-hop pioneers like Ice-T, Lollapalooza championed outsider acts shaping culture. Meanwhile, activists also had a platform, addressing issues like censorship and discrimination. This inclusive spirit captured Generation X’s rebellious spirit.
Over the course of the course of three decades, Lollapalooza steadily expanded, eventually settling in Chicago’s Grant Park.

We’ll be arguing about whether “Challengers” is an Academy Awards contender up until the nominations are announced in January. Is Zendaya a lock for a Best Actress nomination? If Josh O’Connor and/or Mike Faist get nominated, will they be in lead or supporting? Is this even an Oscars movie? The most likely nominee is Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Best Original Score. They’ve won two times before (for “The Social Network” and “Soul”), and their pounding, attention-grabbing electronic score is one of the film’s most distinctive elements.
Luca Guadagnino’s sexy, memeworthy tennis drama was one of the most talked-about movies of the spring. It’s about the romantic complications of tennis pros Tashi (Zendaya), Art (Faist), and Patrick (O’Connor), who are all in love with each other and all kind of hate each other. It’s the most fun adult drama of the year.

Halsey has officially kicked off their new album cycle with an homage to Y2K-era pop. “Lucky” interpolates both Britney Spears’ hit of the same name as well as Monica’s “Angel of Mine.”
On “Lucky,” Halsey reflects on their complicated relationship with navigating health issues, motherhood, and heartbreak while in the public eye. The raw, honest new single has the singer, who uses she/they pronouns, reflecting on her own desire to be seen and heard as she pursued this career as a teenager without realizing the sacrifices and...

The Grammys’ visual media field honors the best in music made for film, television and other formats. This year’s contenders range from blockbuster soundtracks to more under-the-radar but important material from critically beloved artists.
For Best Song for Visual Media, the race is full of plausible winners. Olivia Rodrigo could take home another Grammy this year here for “Can’t Catch Me Now,” the lead single from the “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” soundtrack. There’s precedent for Rodrigo, as Taylor Swift previously won here for a song from the same franchise, “Safe and Sound” from the original “Hunger Games”; both, however, were snubbed by the Oscars.
Speaking of Oscars, one Academy Award-nominated song that could be a contender here is “It Never Went Away” performed and co-written by Grammy favorite Jon Batiste for his documentary “American Symphony.” Batiste doesn’t always win at these awards,...

Of all the below-the-line categories at the Oscars, Best Original Score is the most difficult to predict early on due to the finicky nature of the music branch of the academy. Scores that sound like frontrunners are disqualified for a variety of reasons, from the number of credited composers to the amount of previously recorded music used. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Score.)
Starting with the 2019 Oscars, the academy released a shortlist of 15 contenders. We got this year’s roster of semi-finalists on December 17, 2024. A second round of voting by the members of the music branch, again using preferential voting, will cut these 15 down to the final five nominees. These will be announced, along with the final contenders in all of the other competitive categories on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed...

Predicting Best Original Song at the Oscars is made more difficult by the three-stage process. In years past, many seemingly sure-fire contenders were deemed to be ineligible. Even those ditties that cleared this hurdle then have to pass muster with the 400 plus members of the music branch of the academy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Song.)
To be even eligible for consideration, a tune must meet these criteria:
It must be an original song with words and music, both of which were original and written specifically for the film;
It must be the result of a creative interaction between the filmmaker(s) and the songwriter(s) who have been engaged to work directly on the film; and
There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyric and melody used in the body of the movie or as...

All the way back in 2006, Dibakar Banerjee educated the masses about the practice of land scams through Khosla ka Ghosla. It was a rather simple story where a middle-class man bought a plot of land and then found out that it had been forcefully taken from him by a corrupt businessman, thereby forcing this middle-class man to shell out more money to buy back the land that he had purchased in the first place. Although the movie had a comedic tone, it exposed the unlawful activities happening in the country’s capital and how they were being facilitated by the corrupt authorities. And while the topic was rarely addressed on the big screen after that, in real life, land scams increased exponentially. Now, it has been so normalized that the government can just deem the land you’re living on to be illegal, throw you out, hand it over to a huge real estate company,...
