Nicolas Cage plays the title character of “The Surfer,” but it’s not until the film’s final minute that he climbs onto a surfboard. The movie, while set on a muscle beach in Australia, isn’t about surfing. It’s about male anxiety, male power, male midlife crisis, male rituals of pain and dominance, and how much theater Nicolas Cage can wring out of all of that. “The Surfer” premiered last night at a Cannes midnight show, and that’s smart programming, because it really is a midnight movie — the kind of trippy slapdash comic nightmare where the only way to watch it is to sit back and “go with it.”
Cage makes that easy to do. The film has been designed as a bad-trip psychodrama that’s also a high-camp Nicolas Cage freak-out. I only wish that “The Surfer,” as directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin,...

Nicolas Cage soaked up the applause as his new trippy psychological thriller “The Surfer” scored a six-minute standing ovation at a Cannes Film Festival midnight screening on Friday night.
Cage appeared to be having a ball, beaming from ear to ear and waving across the room as cheers erupted around the Palais for the film, a wild, mind-bending adventure that sees the fan favorite hit the sort of deranged peaks not witnessed on screen since “Mandy.” At one point he took the mic to ask how to say “eat the rat” in French — a line from the film (and likely to become a meme) — roaring “mangez le rat!” to the delight of the crowd.
Cage also used the opportunity while on the mic and standing next to Thierry Fremaux to claim that, back in 2021, he’d phoned the Cannes director to ask if his drama “Pig” could premiere in at the festival.

For some years now, Nicolas Cage has been a genre unto himself: desperate, deranged, deliciously cheesy, with that special mastery of dialogue that moves seamlessly from a panting whisper to a bellow and back again. Put Cage’s name above the title and your film has an immediate brand that not only rides over script glitches but does a full Fast and Furious speed-jump over the top of any yawning gaps in probability.

When a man returns to Australia to buy back his family home after many years in the U.S., he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a group of local surfers who claim ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. Wounded, he defies them and remains at the beach, demanding acceptance. As the conflict escalates he is brought to the edge of his sanity and his identity is thrown into question.
The film is directed by Lorcan Finnegan (“Vivarium”) and written by Thomas Martin, with production taking place entirely a single location in Yallingup in Western Australia.

FX will not renew Mr Inbetween, confirming that the show’s upcoming third season will be its last.
Created, written by and starring Scott Ryan, the Sydney-shot series follows charismatic yet volatile hitman Ray Shoesmith as he juggles his roles of father, ex-husband, boyfriend, and criminal for hire.
The character was first introduced in Ryan’s 2005 mockumentary The Magician.
Mr Inbetween is directed by The Magician editor and producer Nash Edgerton, and produced by Michele Bennett, who also produced the original film.

The upcoming third season will be the last for FX’s Mr Inbetween. FX has opted not to pick up a fourth season of the Australian drama series, created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton.
The nine-episode third season will premiere on Tuesday, May 25 at 10 pm Et/Pt on FX and be available to stream the following day on FX on Hulu. The premiere will include the first two episodes, with one new episode airing each subsequent week.
Mr Inbetween, inspired by Ryan’s 2005 cult film The Magician, centers on Ray Shoesmith (Ryan), a father, ex-husband, boyfriend and best friend: tough roles to juggle in the modern age. Even harder when you’re a criminal for hire.

Australian drama “Mr Inbetween” will end with its upcoming third season on FX, the cable channel announced Thursday.
The half-hour series — created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton — will premiere its nine-episode final season on May 25 at 10/9c, with the first two episodes airing back to back. One new episode will air each subsequent week.
“Mr Inbetween” stars Ray Shoesmith (Ryan) as someone who “takes care of people” — collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis, per FX. Ray demands respect and does not tolerate others disregarding his very clear code of ethics. As Ray’s increasingly volatile work collides with his imploding personal life, he finds himself struggling to stay atop the complex web he has woven.
Here’s the official description for the show’s third and final season:

Scott Ryan.
Scott Ryan can be grateful that Helen Mirren and her husband, director Taylor Hackford, are fans of his FX/Fox Showcase show Mr Inbetween.
The couple urged their Hollywood agent, CAA veteran Fred Specktor, to watch both series of the dramedy created by and starring Ryan as hit man for hire Ray Shoesmith.
Specktor binge-watched the show, obtained Ryan’s email from a friend in Australia, got in touch via Zoom and offered to represent him.
“Yeah, sure,” was the laconic response from the actor/writer who had been open to working in the Us.
Specktor, who turned 87 in April, has an illustrious talent roster including Morgan Freeman, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Jeremy Irons, Geoffrey Rush, Peter Bogdanovich, Dan Aykroyd, Philip Kaufman, Stephen Hopkins and playwright Jez Butterworth.

Scott Ryan in ‘Mr Inbetween.’
In the heart-wrenching climactic scene of the last episode of Mr Inbetween, Scott Ryan’s Ray Shoesmith carried out the mercy killing of his brother then torched the house.
So what is next for the troubled hit man and single father as Ryan maps out the third season of the FX/Fox Showcase drama laced with dark humour?
Without spoilers, the show’s star, creator and writer tells If: “Season three will probably be more like season one in tone; it won’t be as dark as season two. But there will also be room for some pretty dark stuff.”
Justin Rosniak as Ray’s gormless best friend Gary will be even more prominent in the new season. Also returning are Chika Yasumura as his daughter Brittany and, he hopes, Damon Herriman as his boss, nightclub owner Freddy.

In its first season, the title of FX’s Mr. Inbetween suggested several things. The first was the niche its main character, Ray Shoesmith (played by the show’s creator, Scott Ryan), has carved out for himself providing violent, often lethal, solutions to other people’s problems. The second was the show’s careful perching on the line between drama and comedy, with each compact, under-30-minute episode mixing wry humor with much darker material. The third was the way that Ryan couldn’t seem to decide whether he was...

Ben Geurens in ‘Locusts.’
Typifying the challenges facing the vast majority of Australian films, Heath Davis’ suspense-drama Locusts and Partho Sen-Gupta’s thriller Slam were released on a handful of screens last weekend.
Working with limited marketing budgets the distributors and producers relied primarily on reviews and publicity, and the weekend figures were commensurately modest.
Ben Geurens and Nathaniel Dean play estranged brothers who are the targets of an extortion racket in Locusts, which grossed $11,000 on 11 screens and $14,000 with previews.

“It’s difficult for independent films to secure screens and marketing exposure,” Angus Watts, who produced and wrote Locusts, tells If. “We’re happy with the support from exhibitors...

Hunter Page-Lochard in Les Norton (Photo credit: Tony Mott).
Hunter Page-Lochard has a ready answer when people ask why he speaks with an Ocker accent as Billy Dunne, the former pro boxer turned Kings Cross casino doorman in the ABC’s Les Norton.
While he is proud of his Aboriginal and American heritage, he says: “I don’t want to be labelled as an Indigenous character. I want to fit in the group of the people that I’m appearing with.”
From his first day on the set of the Roadshow Rough Diamond crime caper with Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak and Steve Le Marquand, he sensed this show was going to be special.
“We found our groove and our characters by watching and flowing off each other,” he tells If. “As someone who had never done comedy before, I needed that confidence. Once we got together it was like, ‘Oh my God,...

Justin Rosniak in ‘Les Norton’ (Photo: Tony Mott).
Justin Rosniak has been cast as crooks and other wayward types so often in his career he is relishing the opportunity to play more upstanding characters.
“There is not a lot of diversity in characters in Australia so once you get locked into something, some people only see you as one thing,” he tells If. “I often long to get to show my range a bit more, or a softer side.
“So it’s been good that in the last couple of years I have started to get roles that push me in other directions and allow me to add a few different layers.”
In the second season of Mr Inbetween, the comedy/drama created by and starring Scott Ryan as criminal-for-hire Ray Shoesmith, he gets the chance to show a different side to his character Gary, Ray’s best friend.

Scott Ryan as Ray Shoesmith.
Ben Oxenbould, Josh McConville, Rebecca Montalti and Rose Riley are the new faces in the second season of Mr Inbetween, the comedy/drama created by and starring Scott Ryan as criminal-for-hire Ray Shoesmith.
Directed by Nash Edgerton and produced by Blue-Tongue Films, Jungle Entertainment and Michele Bennett’s Pariah Productions, the new series premieres on Fox Showcase at 2 pm on Friday September 13, express from its Us debut on FX.
Shoesmith’s definition of “taking care of people” means collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis.
In season two his work and personal life begin to collide and he finds himself struggling to keep both sides of his life from imploding.
Brooke Satchwell returns as his girlfriend Ally with Justin Rosniak as best friend Gary, Chika Yasumura as daughter Brittany, Nicholas Cassim as brother Bruce,...

Fadia Abboud with Hunter Page-Lochard and Alexander Bertrand on the ‘Les Norton’ set (Photo: Tony Mott).
For someone who for years had no aspirations to become a filmmaker, Fadia Abboud’s career has rocketed.
After co-directing an episode of Here Come the Habibs! with Darren Ashton, she landed her first TV drama gig on Australian Gangster, Roadshow Rough Diamond’s miniseries for the Seven Network.
From there she segued to directing three episodes of the same producers’ comedy-drama Les Norton starring Alexander Bertrand, David Wenham, Rebel Wilson, Justin Rosniak and Pallavi Sharda, for the ABC.
When Roadshow Rough Diamond’s John Edwards and Dan Edwards were setting up Australian Gangster with the creator Gregor Jordan, they realised Jordan would not be able to direct all four episodes of the saga which stars Bertrand as a Sydney criminal.
