The 1966 "Batman" TV series -- one of the best TV shows of all time -- wasn't shy about including shameless cameos. Early in the show's run, the producers invented an organic conceit that would allow famous people to literally poke their heads in for a moment to deliver a few lines of dialogue. While Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) were scaling the side of a building -- something they did often -- a celebrity guest would open a window to see who might be making noise on their outside wall. The series featured peek-ins from Sammy Davis, Jr., Jerry Lewis, Art Linkletter, Don Ho, and Dick Clark.
Other notable stars also provided peek-ins, but many appeared in character, playing their roles from other hip TV shows at the time. Ted Cassidy, for instance, appeared as Lurch from "The Addams Family." Werner Klemperer had a cameo as Colonel Klink from "Hogan's Heroes.

Believe it or not, the "Batman" television series from 1966 had a legendary crossover with another beloved superhero series that ran at the same time. On the 52nd episode of season 2 in 1967, "Batman" welcomed Green Hornet (Van Williams) and Kato (Bruce Lee) from, you guessed it, the original "The Green Hornet" series. The Caped Crusader and his trusty sidekick, Robin (Burt Ward), encountered the "Green Hornet" duo during a devious heist concocted by Colonel Gumm (Roger C. Carmel). The vigilantes crossing paths made sense, especially since Britt Reid, a.k.a. the Green Hornet, was revealed to be longtime friends with Bruce Wayne (Adam West). However, the on-screen scuffle between the sidekicks was a major point of contention behind the scenes.

Diane McBain, whose career playing spoiled rich girls included turns as the yacht owner Daphne Dutton on the ABC crime show Surfside 6 and an author stalking Elvis Presley in Spinout, has died. She was 81.
McBain died Wednesday morning at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills after a battle with liver cancer, her friend and writing partner, Michael Gregg Michaud, told The Hollywood Reporter.
McBain also guest-starred on four episodes of ABC’s Batman, first as a hat shop assistant who’s in cahoots with David Wayne’s Mad Hatter in 1966 and then as stamp company proprietor Pinky Pinkston — she wore only pink and had a pink dog — on the memorable 1967 installment that featured The Green Hornet (Van Williams) and Kato (Bruce Lee).

When Richard Donner and Warner Bros. released "Superman" in 1978, interconnected cinematic comic book universes were but a twinkle in a geek's eye. Donner and his screenwriters were keen on Superman and Superman alone, placing the character in a world where no other superheroes exist. This made for a certain amount of narrative clarity, as mainstream film audiences weren't yet trained to accept kid-friendly crossovers and team-ups. In the past, on the hit TV series "Batman," the title character did have a notable team-up episode wherein Bruce Wayne (Adam West) was revealed to be old school chums with Britt Reid (Van Williams), a.k.a. the Green Hornet. In film, team-ups and crossovers were, at that time, reserved for Godzilla and for Universal monsters. Oh, and also for when Zatoichi met Yojimbo.

This weekend, Marvel Studios finished filming on “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu, thinks that some big things are in store for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first film with an all-Asian cast.

Universal Pictures and Amasia Entertainment are partnering on “The Green Hornet and Kato” and are in development on a film based on the classic characters.
Amasia won the feature film franchise rights to the Green Hornet in January with Amasia’s co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo producing. Helfant is a veteran Hollywood executive who was president and chief operating officer of Marvel Studios for several years starting in 2005.
“The Green Hornet” originated as a radio show during the 1930s based on the vigilante Britt Reid character, owner/publisher of The Daily Sentinel. The 1966 TV series introduced Bruce Lee to the United States as Reid’s sidekick Kato. Seth Rogen starred in Sony’s “The Green Hornet,” which was produced by Neal Moritz and directed by Michel Gondry, generating $227 million worldwide at the box office on a $120 million budget.

In a superhero-dominated film culture ruled by Marvel and DC, one company is banking on an old, familiar name to shake up the duopoly. Indie film/TV production company Amasia Entertainment announced Wednesday that it secured motion picture rights to classic character The Green Hornet.
First created in 1938 by George W Trendle and later a staple in radio serials, the character spawned multiple big-screen adaptations in the early ’40s before surfacing as a cult hit TV series. The short-lived 1960s TV series "The Green Hornet" was brought to ABC-tv by the producer of "Batman" in the hope the lightning would strike twice. It didn't. The show lasted but a single season. Whereas "Batman" was played for laughs, "The Green Hornet" was done as a serious adventure series and probably seemed too hokey even in 1966. Still, if one catches the re-runs on various networks today, it remains highly entertaining. The series afforded an early high profile role for Bruce Lee, who tended to occasionally overshadow top-billed star Van Williams. The show has never been released officially on video in the USA or UK, probably due to legal entanglements. (It took literally decades to get "Batman" released.) The dismal look of this rare ABC promo spot isn't much worse than the prints that are being telecast today. So let's hope someone, somewhere can give The Green Hornet and Kato...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Who’s your favorite action star on TV? Why? Old, current, and upcoming shows count as long as you’ve seen screeners.
Marisa Roffman (@marisaroffman), Give Me My Remote
“Alias'” Sydney freakin’ Bristow is the action hero I still secretly aspire to one day turn into. She was the girl next door who could take down anyone, whether it was a doppelgänger of her best friend or a family member. She was a deceptive (snarky) badass who could save the world. Ugh, I miss Sydney so much.
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Rolling Stone
Even if I’m disqualifying someone like Dwayne Johnson because he doesn’t do action things on “Ballers,” or someone like Bruce Lee because “The Green Hornet” was before my time, TV sure doesn’t lack for action heroes.

Death at an early age has a tendency to preserve, and oftentimes enhance, a star's fame, whether from film or music (Elvis Presley and John Lennon immediately coming to mind). And then there's Bruce Lee, the Hong Kong-American actor and martial artist who, since his passing back in 1973, has only seen his star grow brighter, but under very different circumstances from most other people. "He's the only iconic figure of the 20th century whose fame was almost entirely posthumous," offers Matthew Polly exclusively, whose exhaustive biography, Bruce Lee: A Life, will be published on June 5, 2018. "He died before the movie that made him famous — Enter the Dragon — actually made him famous, and there was no encounter with him beforehand as celebrity persona. People like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe were famous before they died early, but Bruce Lee, aside from viewers of The Green Hornet and a few martial arts fans,...

The news today includes some premiere dates, a renewal, and an announcement of an awards host.
But first, a bit of sad news.
TV's Green Hornet, Van Williams, died at the age of 82.
The short-lived series aired as a companion to Batman in the 1960s. One of the things that made the series memorable was hailed martial artist Bruce Lee playing the manservant, Kato, to Britt Reid, the editor/publisher who masqueraded as the Green Hornet.
Before joining The Green Hornet, Williams played private eyes on Bourbon Street Beat and Surfside 6.
Williams retired from acting altogether in 1982 after guest starring roles in such shows as The Rockford Files and The Streets of San Francisco.
He's survived by his wife of 57 years, Vicki, and three daughters, Nina, Tia and Britt.
Just 12 weeks before the Oscars telecast, Jimmy Kimmel has been chosen to host the 2017 Academy Awards presentation on ABC.

Deadline is reporting that Paramount Pictures & Chernin Entertainment have acquired the rights to The Green Hornet and have started preliminary work on developing a reboot with Gavin O'Connor (Warrior; The Accountant) attached to direct. O'Connor, who admits to being a massive Green Hornet fan growing up, will also serve as a producer alongside Chernin Entertainment and will work closely with screenwriter Sean O'Keefe on crafting the film's script. Unlike the original '60s series, which starred Van Williams as Britt Reid & Bruce Lee as Kato, or the 2011 action/comedy, which starred Seth Rogen (Sausage Party) & Jay Chou (Now You See Me 2) in the lead roles, the reboot is expected to be a more edgy, more badass take on the classic crime-fighter with the hopes of turning the series into a new franchise for the studio. In a lengthy statement, which you can read in full Here, O'Connor described the...

"I am vengeance. I am the night. I am... Ben Affleck." That's right, folks. Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have officially announced who our next Dark Knight will be and it's neither Josh Brolin nor Ryan Gosling. Apparently, Oscar-winning director Ben Affleck has officially signed a multi-film deal with Warner Bros., meaning he'll play the Caped Crusader in the next few Batman films— including Snyder's "Superman vs. Batman" and the highly-anticipated "Justice League."
So far, reactions to Affleck's new role have been pretty mixed with several online petitions being made to recast the Dark Knight. Lest we forget, there have already been a few different interpretations of Batman throughout the years, including Adam West's Batusi-doing do-gooder. Speaking of which, here's a look back on the super campy, yet super awesome "Batman" TV series from the 60's.

Here’s an image that will stick with you for a bit. It’s Tonto (Johnny Depp, The Rum Diary) and The Lone Ranger, John Reid (Armie Hammer, Mirror Mirror) in what is the first image released of Disney and Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger to be directed by Gore Verbinski. Yes, the team that brought you Pirates of the Caribbean. The description of the lead characters are as follows: Tonto is a spirit warrior on a personal quest, joins forces in a fight for justice with John Reid, a lawman who has become a masked avenger.
If there’s some hesitation as to the angle this remake is going to go, the first Pirates was a lot of fun. Also John Carter is a good film, made especially for those aware of the romantic science fiction and space exploration when the stories were originally conceived by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Green Hornet Williams Suffers Heart Attack
The man who played the masked Green Hornet on TV in the 1960s has opened up about his recent health emergency after suffering a heart attack in his remote Idaho home.
Actor Van Williams had to be airlifted to hospital after falling ill on 3 October - just five days before he was scheduled to attend a movie and TV convention in Hollywood.
Williams, who played Britt Reid on TV, tells the Globe, "I had a heart attack. If they hadn't gotten me there (to hospital), they don't know what would have happened."
The 77 year old adds, "I was trying to install a battery when I felt a huge pain in my chest. It was the most intensive pain I've ever had. I could barely move, but I staggered over to where I could alert my wife and she ended up calling 911."
The actor was flown to a Twin Falls medical centre, where medics treated him for a blocked artery.
Williams was released from hospital after a few days and he is now back at home recovering.

Rogen Wanted Original Hornet To Cameo In Movie
Seth Rogen wanted original Green Hornet Van Williams to make a cameo appearance in his new big screen blockbuster, but the 1960s TV star was scheduled for a medical procedure and unable to join the cast.
The Knocked Up funnyman appears in the new film as Britt Reid, the playboy son of a wealthy media mogul who eventually transforms into a superhero - the character Williams played over 40 years ago in the small screen series of the same name.
The actor was keen to bring Williams on board, but when producers eventually tracked the 76 year old down, they discovered he was unavailable for the job because of ongoing medical treatment.
Rogen tells the New York Daily News, "We tried to get him (Williams) involved in the movie in some capacity, to do a cameo or something, and we were never able to get him. I think we finally tracked where he was, but I think he was having a medical operation."...

Not all superhero flicks have to be brooding and joyless. In the same year that audiences were wowed by the sinister tones of The Dark Knight, we were also treated to the much lighter touch of Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man.
Last year saw comic book adaptations Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim vs The World take a quirky and sometimes satirical route to the screen, but without much box office success.
With that in mind, it seemed pretty obvious that Seth Rogen's tendency for dorky comedy would put his new film The Green Hornet in the fun category, but is it a winner or a loser?
Rogen plays feckless playboy Britt Reid in this tale based on the character who debuted in a 1930s radio series and went on to appear in a 60s TV show (starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee) and numerous comic books.

Despite completing only four films (a fifth, 'Game of Death,' was never finished), one season of 'The Green Hornet' TV series in the mid-1960s, and a handful of minor film and TV roles, Bruce Lee left an indelible mark on moviegoers and film history. Lee died at the age of 32 from an allergic reaction to medication only days before the premiere of the Hollywood studio-financed 'Enter the Dragon.' He didn't get the chance to see 'Enter the Dragon' become a major commercial hit, based primarily on his star-making turn, or the long-lasting pop culture influence his last film would have on Western audiences, including countless imitations on film and related media (e.g., Marvel Comics' Shang Chi character), and a renewed (if not just new) curiosity in studying Asian martial arts.

It was short-lived and got pretty silly at the end but I loved the 1966 ABC TV series The Green Hornet. I was too young to realize that Bruce Lee was practicing a fighting style that had a long and storied history or that he would later go on to become a cultural icon. But loved the Black Beauty (an Imperial Crown sedan), Green Hornet’s tricked out ride and the Hornet’s Sting and most of all the minimalist costume that eschewed gaudy tights, briefs and pointed cowls for an overcoat, suit, mask and porkpie hat. That’s a costume I could put together with just one quick raid of my Dad’s closet! I may have known, back when I was six, that I wanted to be a journalist some day so the fact that Britt Reid (played by Van Williams) inherited a newspaper publishing empire and used it...

Movie Review: The Green Hornet
Jan 14, 2011
When most people think of The Green Hornet, most remember Van Williams as the Green Hornet and the legendary Bruce Lee as Kato. Despite the series lasting only one season (26 episodes) the two actors left an indelible impression. Van Williams portrayed Britt Reid as a suave, cool playboy and Bruce Lee was, well, Bruce Lee. More than 40 years later The Green Hornet has finally arrived on the big screen and the logical choice to play the title character is ... um ... Seth Rogen?

"We (Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg) are lifelong comicbook fans and we've always been wanting to make a...

I’m a Green Hornet fanboy, admittedly and proudly. I smiled goofily through the first, second, and seventh viewing of the trailer for Michel Gondry’s film, and I have eagerly been picking up Kevin Smith’s long-sought interpretation of the character. (Have you noticed the eerie similarities in the premises of both, by the way? I know it’s a common trope in superhero stories, but it’s almost one for one!)
But we’re not here to talk about those Green Hornets – I like those Green Hornets. I even flipped when I saw an autographed Van Williams picture at the local Southern California Comics. I’m also a fan of Matt Wagner, whose Sandman Mystery Theater was a seminal read in shaping my love of all things crime comics as well as noir. For all the levity that seems to pour out of the Smith/ Rogen and Goldberg versions,...

Sony Pictures got the online masses talking when they released the first trailer from the upcoming Seth Rogen/Michel Gondry flick, The Green Hornet based on the 1960s television series starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee. To say the trailer was polarizing would be an understatement. People either loved it or they hated it and if online forums were any indication there were far more haters than people who loved it.
Typical was this post from the colorfully named Leadbelly Schoenberg on IMDb: Just saw the trailer, and man, if the film manages to capture just one-tenth of the wretchedness in that, we will truly be baring witness to a new era in Hollywood. For no longer will people be talking about John Travolta and Battlefield Earth or Michael Cimino and Heaven's Gate. Michael Gondry and Seth Rogen will have eclipsed them all with this piece of mind-numbing trash.

With The Green Hornet generating lots of buzz this week after its official trailer debut, website Super Punch decided to take a trip down memory lane by sharing these clips of Britt Reid and his manservant Kato appearing on the old Adam West Batman series. Holy camp, Batman!
In the first short scene -- taken from the 1968 episode The Spell of Tut and aired three weeks after The Green Hornet's debut -- Batman and Robin are "climbing up" the side of a skyscraper when Van Williams (The Green Hornet) and Bruce Lee (Kato) stick their head out of a window and have a building-side chat with Gotham's favorite caped crusaders. The brief clip seems designed solely to introduce The Green Hornet program to the Batman audience. That makes sense since ABC put it on the air after being impressed with the success of Adam West's series. The clip...

If you've seen any of the original episodes of The Green Hornet starring Bruce Lee and Van Williams, you know that Lee was the star of the show, even though he was the sidekick. Lee stole every scene he was in! The guy was super cool and super awesome!
Now you can check out Bruce Lee's Audition tape for the series below. He was 24 years old when he did this audition tape and he's so freakin' slick. Check this out!

Ah, misappropriated nostalgia. It's a fanboy's Kryptonite, the one thing that can make him confused enough to think that somebody else's childhood idols are his own. Farbeit from me to accuse the upcoming Michel Gondry-directed film revival of The Green Hornet of such a thing but let's face it, what's the one thing most people know about The Green Hornet? Bruce Lee, of course. Lee was that rare sidekick that outdistanced and outshone his co-star and leading man Van Williams by a long-shot. In fact, according to studio executives at the time, one of the reasons why the movie that followed the short-lived 1966 TV show of The Green Hornet was a flop was because Lee's Kato, the loyal man-servant to socialite Britt Reid and his alter-ego the Green Hornet, was more popular than Williams's Green Hornet.
