"Where do they come from?" "I vote for outer space. No way these are local boys." Time for another Classic Trailer Rewatch session. This time we're featuring the original trailers for the 1990 horror comedy monster movie classic Tremors. It first opened in January 1990 and made a fair amount at the box office, but only became a real hit later on home video. I grew up watching this all the time with my family - always having a blast with it. Tremors eventually inspired a whole bunch of sequels - Tremors 2: Aftershocks in 1996 all the way through Tremors 5 in 2015 and a few direct-to-video sequels recently, too. This first movie is still the Og best. A group of people ina small isolated desert town defend themselves against strange underground creatures which are killing them one by one. Starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire, with an...

Eddie Murphy has a lot of standalone movies that are great like Trading Places, Harlem Nights, and the more recent Dolomite is my Name, but he’s also been a bit of franchise gold in the past. Obviously, Beverly Hills Cop is the biggest and most recent example, but he’s also been part of 2 48 Hours movies, a couple Nutty Professor flicks, a couple Doctor Dolittle movies and is an integral part of the mega franchise that is Shrek. While we unfortunately have to call Coming to America a franchise now after that abysmal rehash that Amazon dropped on us, there is another movie and character that I actually wouldn’t mind being brought back and has potential, under the right writer and director combo, to be a fun time and maybe even fix some of the mistakes from its predecessor. While Pluto Nash and Norbit are all time stinkers...

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek shifts his focus over to the works of John Carpenter with the latest episode in his The Best Scene video series. The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. He narrowed it down to three options, and you can hear all about them in the video embedded above.
In the video, Lance covers the opening gambling scene with our heroes Jack Burton and Wang, the alley battle scene that...

Legendary director John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his new unscripted TV series, John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (you can read our review at This Link), and during an interview with ComicBook.com he was asked which of his films he thinks would make for the best film-to-video game adaptation. His answer: the 1986 martial arts fantasy adventure Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here)!
Here’s the direct quote from Carpenter: “I think, maybe Big Trouble in Little China, it seems to me would be a fun video game and kick ass. There’s also, by the way, a Thing card game. I mean, there’s a lot of these games. There’s actually a They Live game. I don’t know that there would ever be a Prince of Darkness game. I don’t see that.“

The Tremors 3: Back to Perfection episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Subterranean creatures become two-legged, gliding Ass Blasters in the second sequel to Tremors. Kevin Bacon isn’t there to fight them. Neither is Fred Ward. Directed by Ron Underwood from a script he crafted with Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson, the 1990 film Tremors is one of the greatest creature features ever made.

Prince Of Darkness
Prince Of Darkness, streaming on Talking Pictures TV Encore until June 19
Talking Pictures continues to be a great source of older cinema, but despite what you might think, not everything that it shows is in black and white. It's also worth checking out the channel's catch-up service, Encore, where this enjoyable John Carpenter horror flick - most vibrantly in colour - is currently available. Dark and ancient forces are at work as a group of grad students - plus a priest (Donald Pleasance) and a professor (Victor Wong) become embroiled with a sinister canister of devilment which, unnervingly, can only be opened from the inside. It may not be Carpenter's best work but there's plenty here to enjoy as religion mixes with something altogether more science-fiction based in an apocalyptic tale that also includes one of the most effective jumpscares in the business - even when you.

When Universal Pictures released the classic creature feature Tremors (watch it Here) back in 1990, they decided to market it with poster art that brings to mind the iconic poster for Universal’s 1975 release Jaws. But before they made that choice, they had hired famed artist Drew Struzan – whose work includes the posters for Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and Star Wars films, among many others – come up with a couple poster ideas. Yesterday, Struzan took to social media to share a look at a couple of his unused Tremors poster concepts… and you can check them out in this embed:

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at one of my personal all-time favorite movies, the 1990 creature feature Tremors (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about Tremors, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Ron Underwood from a screenplay by Brent Maddock and S. S. Wilson (who also share story credit with Underwood), Tremors has the following synopsis: Handymen Val McKee and Earl Bassett are tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada. But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of an eccentric couple, the group fights for survival against giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh.

These words typed across the computer screen by a possessed grad student cut right to the heart of what makes John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness an outlier in possession horror still to this day. John Carpenter is deservedly known as a master of horror, but he often did not get his just due quick enough. So many of his films did not find a loving audience until after their theatrical releases, including The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, In the Mouth of Madness, and 1987’s Prince of Darkness, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.
The film is the second chapter of Carpenter’s “Apocalypse Trilogy”—which also includes The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness. Although it lacked the star power and larger scope of the other two films, Prince of Darkness still comes off as incredibly rich and complex. It’s a kind of movie you don’t see much of anymore, if at all.

The primary thing one must know about Jon Turteltaub's 1992 film "3 Ninjas" is that it contains one use of "Pysche!," one use of "Not!," and one use of "Face!" Additional details are but window dressing.
In "3 Ninjas," the Douglas brothers — 12-year-old Rocky (Michael Treanor), 11-year-old Colt (Max Elliott Slade), and 8-year-old Tum-Tum (Chad Power) — are being trained in deadly martial arts by their affable grandfather Mori (the venerable Victor Wong). The boys' father is an FBI agent who is on the tail of a dangerous criminal mastermind with an army of ninjas. The villain also happens to be a former...

The Paramount Presents Series recently released The Golden Child on Blu-ray and it is a beautiful disc to behold even though the movie has a few flaws.
It’s 1986 and Eddie Murphy is riding high on the success of Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours and Trading Places and it is time to create another blockbuster for this talented star. What do you do? Well, let’s keep the same formula and feature Murphy as a hip, wisecracking hero who this time finds lost children. Then, throw in a bit of martial arts in the style of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China and add some Asian mysticism that reminds viewers of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. With a prodigious output during its peak, it isn’t hard for some Hong Kong features to fade into obscurity. It’s only with recent re-releases that we are getting the opportunity to revisit them. On researching “Fatal Vacation” for this review, I was surprised to read about the controversy that surrounded its production. With a relatively unusual subject matter for the industry, it veers into exploitation territory more in common a with “grindhouse” movie than regular Hong Kong fare.

This 1990 monster romp still feels bright, smart & fresh, a mix of light comedy and old-fashioned scares. The entire show is one long battle against smelly burrowing beasts called ‘Graboids.’ Desert handymen Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward must work hard to avoid taking their place in the Graboid Food Chain. Ambitious it ain’t, but it delivers what monster fans want — gross-out thrills, excellent effects and solid laughs. Arrow’s 4K Ultra HD disc is as sharp as a tack, and a second Blu-ray disc contains an unprecedented volume of featurettes, interviews and production documentation.

Bernardo Bertolucci, the legendary Italian director behind classics such as “Last Tango in Paris” and “The Last Emperor,” has died at age 77. Bertolucci’s publicist, Flavia Shiavi, confirmed the director’s passing on the morning of Monday, November 26. The filmmaker, who had been suffering from cancer, died at his home in Rome, Italy.
Bertolucci was widely considered one of Italy’s greatest auteurs throughout his five decades making films in both Hollywood and Italy. The filmmaker got his start working with another giant of Italian cinema, Pier Paolo Pasolini. Bertolucci was an assistant on Pasolini’s first feature, “Accattone,” before he made his own directorial debut at age 21 with “The Grim Reaper” in 1962. The drama centered around the murder of a Roman prostitute and premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Bertolucci gained recognition in Hollywood following the release of “The Conformist,” which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Leon Corcos, though far from a household name, is a frequent Producer and collaborater with Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Stretch) and most recently Exec Produced Garry Marshall's star studded, swan song Mother's Day. Leon produced Carnahan's debut feature Blood, Guts, Bullets, & Octane, BMW Films Ticker- starring Clive Owen and Don Cheadle, and Stretch starring Patrick Wilson, Ed Helms, and Chris Pine... But, Corcos got his start in the solidly Indie genre of comedic horror a la his first feature, The Devil Takes A Holiday. After cutting his teeth on commercials and political spots in Sacramento, Leon took the plunge on his first feature in 1996 ( which garnered a feature piece in Film Threat magazine) and starred John Carpenter staple Victor Wong, character actors...

Poor John Carpenter. Like nearly all of the truly great horror filmmakers, his movies are destined to be misunderstood in their time, only finding the proper appreciation several years after the fact when the rest of the world is finally able to catch up to what he’s doing. It’s not always the case, of course, as he has had a handful of commercial hits; for many years, his breakthrough movie Halloween was the most successful independent film ever made. It was the rare instance in which audiences were tuned in to what Carpenter was doing at the time he was doing it. Most of his other great films—and he has more great films than almost any other director working in the genre—took years to connect with the public. Don’t blame Carpenter for that. He’s a man ahead of his time.

John Carpenter celebrated his 68th birthday a few days ago, so it felt like a no-brainer that I should cover one of his films this week. We here at Fsr are big Carpenter fans and have already covered several of his films on Commentary Commentary — Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live — but while those titles are beloved I’m turning this week to one of his less-respected titles that I happen to love. 1987’s Prince of Darkness is a fun mix of gory horror and metaphysical mumbo-jumbo, and while some sketchy acting hurts it the film as a whole is terrifically creepy entertainment. The score is fantastic, the film ends strong, and the cast includes a bevy of Carpenter favorites including Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, and Dennis Dun. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Prince of Darkness commentary. Prince of Darkness...

I confess that my first reaction to this news was caught on film and you can now see it in photo form attached to this story. Here's the thing: I am on record as saying that I consider Dwayne Johnson a bit of a natural resource. I don't think the movies he makes are always worthy of his charisma and his genuine talent, but i think he's more than proven himself capable. I am hopeful when he announces a project that it'll be something that is as good as he is. I am also on record as saying that it's exhausting to get worked up about every single remake or sequel or reboot or whatever at this point. The industry has so clearly embraced that as an omnipresent business plan that it is wasted energy. It takes a lot to shake that loose from me now, but maybe this one...

Tremors didn't make a big splash in theaters, considering its release was during the awards season dumping ground of January. (Also it's a movie about carnivorous subterranean worms.) But the film found a second life on VHS and cable, and it has become a beloved cult hit, spawning many sequels. So let's take a trip back to Perfection Valley, where it all began. Wanna Write a Great Screenplay? Study TremorsIn a Reddit thread titled, "What is Your Favorite Kevin Bacon Movie and Why Is It Tremors,...

“You know what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like this?” This June, Boom! Studios will tell you just what ol’ Jack Burton says in his continuing adventures in Big Trouble In Little China, a new, ongoing series from comics favorites Eric Powell (The Goon) and Brian Churilla (The Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun). The cult-classic film combined ‘80s supernatural action with ‘70s kung-fu flicks, and Boom! has the film’s original director, John Carpenter, working alongside Powell to bring that over-the-top spirit to the comic. Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) is a simple man who doesn’t believe in ghosts or magic until he’s swept into a mind-boggling adventure deep within Chinatown’s mysterious underworld. Burton’s pal, Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), is trying to rescue his kidnapped fiancée. Egg Shen (Victor Wong), an enigmatic tour-bus driver seems...

The devil. He does have a way of showing up at the worst possible time and throwing a wrench into even the best laid plans. In celebration of the release of Devil's Due on January 17th, we bring you our Top 5 Antichrist Films.
For honorable mentions we've got to include Michael Langdon (spawn of Tate and Vivien) from "American Horror Story: Murder House," the original season. Of course Hellboy holds at least some claim to the throne as well.
Research gave us the unforgettable name of Randall Flagg, who appears across many of the works of Stephen King as another possible antichrist. But the most amusing has to be Alan Moore's depiction of Harry Potter (although never named outright, it's quite clear whom he's referring to) in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic as the true son of Satan (click here if you're unfamiliar with the reference).

When you have favourite movies it always comes as a surprise when you hear that they bombed on original release, even more of a surprise when you learn that most of its failure was down to being buried by the film companies. This is the case of Big Trouble in Little China, a movie that now has such a cult following that it’s hard to see how it could have failed. Luckily for us we have Arrow Video to give us a Blu-ray steelbook release to truly celebrate the film.

Prep for the Assault on Precinct 13 Blu-ray Release by Counting Down the Top 10 John Carpenter Films

John Carpenter seems to be at odds with what he loves and what is expected of him. Early in his career, Carpenter made a science fiction film (Dark Star), a siege picture (Assault on Precinct 13), and then Halloween.
He speaks freely of his love of the science fiction genre, yet seemed to have been pushed into the horror realm because of Halloween, where he has made quite a name for himself. Prince of Darkness, is an interesting blend of elements of sci-fi and horror, with some lofty academic ideas to propel the characters through this macrocosmic drama.
Carpenter favorite Donald Pleasence, simply billed here as “Priest,” finds a key after the death of a colleague, which leads him to an ancient evil trapped in the basement of an old church. In this instance, “evil” has taken the form of a swirling green mass in a glass container. In an attempt to stop an impending,...

Few movies evoke as much nostalgic fear for me as Prince of Darkness. While I recognize that it is not John Carpenter’s finest work, it has scenes that will make you cringe, music that haunts and post-apocalyptic, flashback clips of a world no longer under they eyes of God that look absolutely terrifying. These may not make up for the chaotic, shit flung at the wall story-all-over-the-place nature of the picture, but Carpenter fans will be able to look past all that. If you can stand the transmission of the “anti-god” via a strange water-like substance being passed between people like their playing tonsil hockey, non sequitor scenes of 80′s violence and the root of all evil contained with a large glass container in the basement of a church unleashed because a bunch of not-so-bright grad students want to play Scooby Doo then this movie will make your week.

They’re sometimes furry, sometimes scary, and always angry. Here’s our list of cinema’s 10 most underrated monsters…
King Kong. Godzilla. The terrifying creature out of Alien. They’re all household names. They’re the superstars of the monster world, hogging the limelight while their less charismatic brethren languish in obscurity.
To redress the balance a little, we’ve compiled a list of a few cinematic monsters that deserve more attention. And given that movie monsters are always being shot, stabbed and set on fire by square jawed heroes, it’s fair to say that even the rubberiest, most shambling ones deserve a little bit of love, so if there are any you think we’ve forgotten, feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments.

Wow! This is one of the lightest weeks in recent memory for horror title releases on DVD and Blu-ray. But that's fine because after the rush in October, we are still trying to catch up on watching all of those flicks.

Stephen King's new novel and Call of Duty's new edition, Black Ops (with Zombie mode), also drop, and Steve Austin joins the fray along with Tremors' inevitable Blu-ray release.

“Prince of Darkness” (1987) Director: John Carpenter Cast: Donald Pleasence, Lisa Blount, Victor Wong, Jameson Parker Prince of Darkness is about a group of graduate students studying quantum physics , who are sent to a mysterious church to study a strange canister that has evil origins. Prince of Darkness is one of John Carpenter’s most underrated horror movies. Usually, you will have a horror movie that has holes in the plot, or, a movie where something just does not make sense. As originally conceived, The Golden Child was supposed to be a serious action drama about a Tibetan holy child kidnapped by evil forces who want to use a mystical dagger to sacrifice him to demonic spirits. It was supposed to star Mel Gibson and be directed by John Carpenter. For reasons unknown, Gibson passed on the project, and it went to Eddie Murphy. The script was then rewritten -- and mostly improvised -- as an action comedy, which was more suited to Eddie Murphy's style and built in audience. And thus Eddie Murphy became Chandler Jarrell, a detective who specializes in searching for missing children, and who is hired by a mysterious Tibetan woman because he is believed to be The Chosen One. It was an odd choice for Murphy, who truly was The Chosen One at that point in his career. He had just finished three incredibly successful films: 48 Hrs,...

Back in 1986, Starlog found Big Trouble on the set of Little China.
Not long ago an “underground movie” was what you called something shot quietly for a $1.98, shown accidentally in a theater everyone thought had shut down years ago, and then raved about by a critic who usually hates these unheard-of little films.
Now, an underground movie is something else entirely—films like Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, The Goonies, A View To A Kill, Young Sherlock Holmes, Return To Oz and the Invaders From Mars remake are all big-budget fantasy flicks set in elaborate subterranean worlds beneath our biggest cities and smallest towns. Now “going underground” means production design gone wild.
It also means that Big Trouble In Little China, a $25 million investment for 20th Century Fox (and just out on Blu-ray this week), isn’t nearly as unique as it might have been years ago. It means that the film,...
