Liam Hemsworth takes a machete stab at playing a furious antihero in writer-director Malik Bader’s testosterone-soaked crime thriller “Killerman,” a movie made by men, about simplistically ruthless men, aimed to entice other men aching for those manly outdated movies “they don’t make anymore,” where distorted alpha masculinity was solely portrayed through vicious violence, gratuitous sex, and impenetrable coldness.
Tired of the minimal cut they receive from money laundering in NYC, gracelessly ambitious Skunk (Emory Cohen) and well-groomed hustler Moe (Hemsworth) plan to make their own big move buying cocaine for cheap with money that belongs to Skunk’s uncle, an archetypical kingpin played by Zlatko Buric (“Teen Spirit”). Cohen leans heavily on a thick New York accent, while Hemsworth builds his drug dealer swagger with flamboyant shirts and a nonchalant walk.

During Deadpool.s production in Vancouver, Stipan and DoP Ken Seng (an old university friend) ran camera and lens tests, then devised a set of reference looks on-set, much of which could be created in camera to build a natural look..

Austin - Jason Bateman has spent most of his life in front of the camera, and like many actors, he finally reached a point where he wanted to make a film of his own. Working from a wicked script by Andrew Dodge, he's made a film that gives him one of the best starring roles he's ever had, and it feels like even though this was written by someone else, it perfectly suits the comic sensibilities he's displayed as long as he's been working. When Bateman was young, he had a knack for playing awful people who still somehow managed to be charming. Even though he was only on 21 episodes of "Silver Spoons," that was enough for me to identify him as someone worth watching. He and I are roughly the same age, and I liked that he had such a serene confidence about being a splendid asshole onscreen. Like Michael J. Fox,...

Los Angeles -- It's a given at multiplexes these days that despite switch-off-your-cell-phone announcements and the occasional grumbling protest, whatever's onscreen will have to compete with tiny pockets of light from audience members unable to stay off their handhelds. Watching those glow patches come and go during "Disconnect" reinforces the film's position on how desensitized we've become to these technological intrusions. Not that Henry-Alex Rubin's schematic multi-strand drama is at all shy about articulating its themes.
Directing his first narrative feature, documentary-maker Rubin ("Murderball") has assembled a solid cast and weaves together the three interconnected stories of Andrew Stern's original screenplay with elegance and efficiency. But this is a film that voices its warning about the hazards of a wired existence with solemn self-importance. It's also quite late in the day to be pointing out that we're so plugged into our devices we often fail to see or...

Chicago – “Step Up 3” is not a film so much as a slickly photographed collage of superbly performed dance sequences. Its structure harkens back to the golden age of screen musicals where the plot merely functioned as an intermission between numbers. There’s no need to visit the previous “Step Up” installments before stepping into this one, since their plots are more or less identical.
“SU3” merely aspires to entertain by utilizing the human body as its central special effect. The result is an irresistible burst of spirit-lifting escapism that sends the audience out on a wave of good feeling. Though the film’s acclaimed 3D visuals are available on a separate Blu-Ray edition, the stellar HD picture quality on the 2D version is second to none, while Ken Seng’s cinematography places the performers front and center, providing viewers with what feels like the best seat in the house.

It’s finally happened—after several years of movies attempting to recapture the spirit of ’70s/early-’80s horror cinema, we now have one that harks back to the fright films of the ’90s. Sorority Row, officially a remake of Mark Rosman’s 1983 The House On Sorority Row (though the credits try to fudge the issue by citing its original title, Seven Sisters), feels much more akin to the snarky-mouthed slasher features that, though they only made up a small fraction of the genre output in the decade before this one, came to define it in the eyes of many fans.
Sorority Row would have fit in very comfortably alongside the likes of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer—particularly the latter, as it too deals with bloody vengeance directed at a bunch of attractive young friends who have covered up an accidental killing. In this case,...

As a few of the many recent horror filmmakers to adopt a pseudo-documentary conceit, the good people behind Quarantine betrayed the movie the moment they cast it. Headliners Jennifer Carpenter and Jay Hernandez, if not exactly marquee stars, are both recognizable enough (he from the Hostel films, she from Dexter and The Exorcism of Emily Rose) that the notion we're seeing real-time footage of people that have since disappeared has zero credibility from the first moment they appear on screen.

Film Review: The Poker House
Venue: Los Angeles Film Festival.
Lori Petty, a likable actress in such films as “A League of Their Own” and “Point Break, ” makes her directorial debut with a very personal story about her harrowing childhood living with a drug-addicted mother. While the film has strong moments and performances, it illustrates the dangers of overly personal filmmaking. Petty's passion for the subject is unmistakable; what's missing is the clarity that a true artist would provide. Few viewers will want to subject themselves to the seamy slice-of-life depicted in this memoir.
This lack of clarity is evident first of all in a very unkempt structure. Petty thrusts us right into the dangerous life of Agnes (Jennifer Lawrence) and her two younger sisters. While a brief flashback sequence, done in the style of grainy home movies, is designed to explain how Agnes's family was ripped apart, it doesn't really accomplish that feat. We spend a long time trying to comprehend the dynamics within the drug house where Agnes struggles to survive. The verbose voice-over narration doesn't help. Too many story points remain murky. When Agnes appears for a basketball game at the movie's finale, it comes as something of a shock because we had no idea she was even attending school.
Lawrence has a touching poise on camera that conveys the resilience of children. Sophia Bairley and Chloe Grace Moretz as her sisters also perform admirably. The surprise of the movie is Selma Blair, who gives a stark, uncompromising performance as Agnes's mother that may be the best of her career. On the other hand, David Alan Grier-who also co-authored the screenplay with Petty-delivers a showy, bewildering turn as an eccentric barroom drunk.
Those who survived abusive childhoods may feel a strong connection to the material. Other moviegoers will applaud Petty's intentions but feel alienated from the squalid, chaotic universe presented here. The editing by Tirsa Hackshaw doesn't help us to get our bearings. Mike Post's haunting score is an asset.
