A bunch of friends decide to throw a birthday party in a large warehouse Two of the group, Kay and best friend Noah – as people tend to do when they’re supposed to be cleaning up – mess around with the Ouija board they find instead of actually doing work. And as we all know in horror films, messing with a ouija board is a bad idea, especially when, according to Kay, people died in that very building the year before! Big mistake. What’s an even bigger mistake is actually trying to contact said dead people. What follows is your usual “haunting” tropes – strange noises, disappearing objects, oh and a possible portal to the other side…

This film fan knows director Israel Luna from his previous film, Ticked Off Trannies with Knives. This earlier film was a chaotic endeavour involving transsexuals, violence and finally, revenge. Luna's next project was formerly titled The Ouija Experiment. United Kingdom distributors Signature Entertainment have renamed this horror title to The Realm for a Summer release. The Realm is a found footage film. Several friends have a Ouija party and they manage to summon spirits and even some personal demons. Events get hectic when the evil entity makes its presence known. Will anyone survive this night of terror? This title will likely release in North America, shortly. For now, horror and thrillers fans can preview this independent feature below, with the film's trailer. Release Date: July 15th, 2013 (United Kingdom). Director/writer: Israel Luna. Israel Luna's low-budget horror film "Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives" will make its Us television debut on Showtime July 2, 2011. The film was the subject of a GLAAD-sponsored protest that encouraged the Tribeca Film Festival to pull the film from its 2010 lineup, and according to an indieWIRE interview with the director, the communication between the director and GLAAD was inconsistent. The protest was unsuccessful and the film went on ...

The horror genre is known for being the genre in which plenty of up and coming talents have been discovered. Why don't we take a look: Margot Kidder and Bob Clark of Black Christmas, Cory Monteith in Killer Bash, Shannon Elizabeth in Jack Frost, Brandon Fehr in Final Destination, and so on and so on.
With this first annual edition, I wanted to bring some attention to slightly unknown talent that's been making waves or has the potential to do so in the horror community. Anybody in this talented lineup has the potential to become a breakthrough star in my opinion and I wanted to highlight that. I fully believe in the talent of each person that's here on this list. These are the ones you might not have heard of yet, but you should be keeping an eye out on them......

The cast and crew of a low budget horror film is murdered by a psychotic killer who videotapes the murders and fashions them in the same way of a script that some of the crew is working on secretly.
Entertaining combination of behind the scenes spoof, valentine to Friday the 13th and all of the ripoffs that came out shortly afterwards with a dash of Scream thrown in. Fright Flick features spot on humor that sends up what happens on the set of a low budget horror film from the colorful personalities involved, to the sometimes laughable casting decisions, to the fact of how someone can have one job today and being serving another job function the next day. So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.
Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.
Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

*This review for the satirish Fright Flick has been written by co-writer Ed Sum.
**Full disclosure: a DVD of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures.
Director: Israel Luna.
Writers: Todd Jenkins (story), and Israel Luna (story).
Just imagine what happens when everyone, including their own grandma, has their own agenda and there is a movie within a movie going on at the same time. Israel Luna's Fright Flick gives some interesting satire in his look at the dirty goings on in making a low budget movie.
He puts the slick and grease back behind what's always been imagined in the slime and grime of wannabes with high egos, who are trying to make that big break. This film revolves around a low-grade slasher flick that turns b-grade when the production team starts making a sequel to their product and certain members are being killed for real and for unknown reasons.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Bitter Feast"
Directed by Joe Maggio
Released by Mpi Home Video
When a food critic ("Humpday"'s Justin Leonard) takes a butcher knife to the restaurant of a celebrity chef (James LeGros), the chef plots the ultimate revenge in this gory satirical thriller from director Joe Maggio. (My review from the Los Angeles Film Festival is here.)
"Case 39"
Directed by Christian Alvart
Released by Paramount
2010 is probably a year best forgotten by Renee Zellweger, who not only appeared in the execrable "My Own Love Song," which went straight to Netflix, but also this thriller that was filmed in 2006, but didn't see a release until last fall. Zellweger stars as a social worker whose latest case involving a child (Jodelle Ferland) that she believes is a victim of abuse leads to something far more terrifying. Bradley Cooper and Ian McShane co-star.

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.
The Last Exorcism (Review)

The legendary blues singer Koko Taylor once recorded a song titled “I Can Love You Like A Woman or I Can Fight You Like a Man.” That could have been the theme song for this cool and gritty homage to both grindhouse movies and revenge flicks, written and directed by Israel Luna and available on DVD from Breaking Glass Pictures. When the film debuted, it set off howls of outrage from the transgender community who felt it misrepresented them. Well, to paraphrase one of the best lines from the very funny script, “Let’s get some balloons for your pity party, bitch.”...

The chicks; Krystal Summers, Erica Andrews, Jenna Skyy, Kelexis Davenport and Willam Belli, of Israel Luna's horror / revenge / exploitation opus Ticked- Off Trannies with Knives got something extra in store. To my surprise and enjoyment, I found Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives to be the place for some transaction as the film deals with a group of transgender women who are violently beaten by three straight guys and left for dead. After regaining consciousness, the violated vixens turn deadly divas. With their new found confidence and courage, the ticked-off trannies slice their way to vengeance. Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives transcends any translucent transparent film out there. You don't need a translator to be transfixed and transformed by this tranquilizing, transfixing slab of a motion picture. "A transploitation revenge fantasy!" Here's what director Israel Luna had to say.
So who is Israel Luna and what are you all about?

Independent director Israel Luna (Ticked off Trannies with Knives) is taking his horror a step further in his latest film entitled Fright Flick. This film has played on the film festival circuit earlier this year, with several awards given for Luna's hard work and attention to gore. Now, the film is moving to DVD January 25th through Breaking Glass Pictures.
The film is a satire of the independent horror filmmaking business. Several cast and crew members find themselves in a real life horror situation, when murders turn up after the director yells: "cut!" The release will host an assortment of bonus features including a blooper reel, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, and a photo gallery. More details to come.

Looks like 2011 will be getting off to a strong start. Here's yet another horror title that will have a January 25th release. Breaking Glass Pictures will release Fright Flick under it's Vicious Circle Films label.
Fright Flick is written and directed by Israel Luna and stars Chad Allen, Richard Curtin, Todd Jenkins, and more and is being described as "the quintessential campy, who-dunnit flick that reveals how everyone is just dying to be in the movie business ... though it may cost them an arm and a leg!"
Synopsis:
Director Isreal Luna weaves this hair-raising tale of a low-budget film crew being stalked by a vicious slasher. The director is a hack who's obsessed with the lead actress, the producer is forced to swallow his pride instead of getting credit where credit is due, and the supporting actress is jealous that she didn't land the lead.

Wow! This is one of the lightest weeks in recent memory for horror title releases on DVD and Blu-ray. But that's fine because after the rush in October, we are still trying to catch up on watching all of those flicks.
This week we have the very controversial and disturbing Antichrist from Lars von Trier, which spawned a Nsfw Motion Picture Purgatory from Rick Trembles. Stephen King's new novel and Call of Duty's new edition, Black Ops (with Zombie mode), also drop, and Steve Austin joins the fray along with Tremors' inevitable Blu-ray release.

It's pretty much as advertised. Done up like a 70s grindhouse exploitation film, Israel Luna's Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives is about ... a bunch of ticked-off trannies with knives. You can literally see the glistening leer of Quentin Tarantino's influence all over this flick: from the opening sequences of trash-talk that have little impact on the action of the plot to the over-the-top gore to the insistence on adding the film burns and "reel missing" clips. If you're looking for a sensitive portrayal of the Lgbt community, you best look to Felicity Huffman. Trannies is chock full of slurs -- both racial and gender-bending -- and some of the fiercest transsexuals you will ever see on celluloid. These bitches know how to throw down -- a bevy of busty exotic dancers who love their liquor as much as laying down the hurt on the greaseballs who try to rough them up.

Often I bemoan the current state of American cinema, with its penchant for mimicking anything and everything that makes a few dollars at the box office. If it’s not a sequel, then it’s a remake. And if it’s not a remake, then it’s an adaptation of a popular comic book series or best-selling novel. Even the independent market isn’t above aping what works; one look at the current crop of so-called “grindhouse throwbacks” will tell you everything you need to know about where this country stands in terms of creativity and original thought. When people ask me why I don’t see very many movies at the cineplex these days, I point to the remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and protrude my bottom lip for dramatic effect. If more examples are required, I can provide them at no extra charge. Although writer/director...

One movie whose title speaks for itself is writer/director Israel Luna’s Ticked-off Trannies With Knives, a gory grindhouse throwback slicing through West Hollywood’s Laemmle’s Sunset 5 (8000 Sunset Boulevard) this Friday. A Tribeca Film Festival world premiere, the Breaking Glass Picture release follows a group of transgender women who exact bloody revenge on the sleazy rednecks who viciously attack them. In the final part of our interview (see below the jump; part one ran here and two here) with the Texas-born Luna, the filmmaker tells Fango’s Tony Timpone about the financing of his extreme movie and growing up with his favorite magazine.

Good things come to those who wait and for those who feel as though they've suffered through a year of largely uninspired films up to now will likely breathe a sigh of relief at the sound of names like Darren Aronofsky, Sofia Coppola and Peter Weir. 'Tis the season for Jim Carrey to take a pay cut to star in a gay romance like "I Love You Phillip Morris" or Javier Bardem is whispering sweet nothings to spirits in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu's "Biutiful" rather than Julia Roberts.
There is the naughty -- Kristen Stewart stripping in "Welcome to the Rileys," the would-be terrorists of the Brit comedy "Four Lions," or the evil Santa in "Rare Exports" -- and the nice -- the tap-dancing lovers in "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench," the glory of James Franco's daredevil surviving "127 Hours" and Colin Firth's verbally-challenged royal conquering his stutter in "The King's Speech.

Tucson and Phoenix: Prepare to be rocked, shocked and defiled. Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.
This year the fest is screening 30 feature films, some of which are making their U.S. and even world debuts. The opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the German hit man comedy Snowman’s Land, directed by Tomasz Thomson, while closing the fest is the controversial and violent A Serbian Film by Srdjan Spasojevic, which you have to be over-18 to get into.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homebrewed films as well, such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska; Nude Nuns With Big Guns by Joseph Guzman; 1,001 Ways to Enjoy the...

You had me at the title. Ticked Off Trannies With Knives was one of the most buzzed about films at Tribeca this year and you want to know why? Yep, the title. It’s a title that is tailor made for the midnight slot. Hell, at this point it’s hard to remember which came first – midnight movies or the exploitation genre. Now, since grind house went art house, exploitation has received a lot of overdue praise. Directors like Jack Hill (Coffee, Switchblade Sisters, Spider Baby) and Brian Trenchard-Smith (Turkey Shoot, Dead End Drive-in) have been embraced by a larger audience lately, largely due to the cultural influence of younger director’s like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Craig Brewer. They helped make cult cool.

Back in 2007, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez paired up to create the double-feature Grindhouse. The film was a loving recreation of low-budget 70.s exploitation films that would run in seedy drive-in theaters and use shock to draw in audiences. The film worked hard to both praise the genre while also acknowledging its campiness. In 2010, director Israel Luna has created and premiered Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives, which not only rips off everything that made the Tarantino-Rodriguez film entertaining, but manages to suck all of the fun out of it in the process. The film follows a group of five transvestites (Krystal Summers, Kelexis Davenport, Willam Belli, Erica Andrews, Jenna Skyy) who work at a small Dallas nightclub. One night, a man (Thomas Zembrod), having felt tricked by one of the girls, sets a trap that leaves two of the girls dead, lands two in the hospital and has one fall into...

Movieline just heard from Israel Luna, the director of the suddenly-hot Tribeca fest entry Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, a "transploitation" revenge thriller attacked by GLAAD last week. Said the organization then: "The film, its title and its marketing misrepresent the lives of transgender women and use grotesque, exploitative depictions of violence against transgender women in ways that make light of the horrific brutality they all too often face." Luna took issue with that description, though as he told Movieline today, the criticism has convinced him to change the film's trailer:...

Tribeca Bosses Stand By Transgender Comedy
Organisers of Robert De Niro's New York film festival have stood by their decision to include a transgender comedy in its line-up, despite protests from gay rights campaigners.
Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, about a group of transgender women who seek revenge after being beaten up, is due to be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.
Its inclusion has angered members of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), who are offended by the use of the word "trannies" and claim the film wrongly represents transgender females.
But festival executives have refused to bow to pressure from GLAAD and are sticking by plans to show director Israel Luna's film at the upcoming event.
In a statement, bosses say the Tribeca board of directors is "proud of its ongoing commitment to bring diverse voices and stories to its audiences".
The festival was founded by De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2002 in a bid to rejuvenate downtown Manhattan following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
This year's event kicks off with the world premiere of Shrek Forever After on 21 April and runs until 2 May.

New York (AP) — The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is calling on the Tribeca Film Festival to pull a transgender comedy from its lineup. The film, "Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives," pays homage to exploitation films and follows a group of transgender women who are beaten and then seek revenge. It's to screen at Tribeca in April. GLAAD alleges the film misrepresents the lives of transgender women and claims the characters are caricatures "written as drag queens." The organization also objected to the use of the word "trannies" in the title. Director Israel Luna and producer Toni Miller released a...

Comment forums and the Facebook page for one of the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival's films, "Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives," have lit up with comments debating the perceived offensiveness of the film, which will have its world premiere at the event in late April. Gay director Israel Luna's new exploitation film isn't earning him any fans. Luna has created Ticked Off Trannies With Knives (Totwk), about a group of transexual women who decide to get revenge on the men who brutally raped them. He's touting it as a film in the spirit of the exploitation films of the 70s, where the titillating dialog, bodacious bods and, of course, the extreme violence, will create new and unique genre called "transpoitation."
Yeah, whatever.

GLAAD is a funny little organization, on the one hand these self-appointed sentries for positive representation of gays in media, on the other a kind of nutless institution reluctant to get their Pradas dirty on the way to the awards show by, say, recognizing important but confrontational work like Kirby Dick's Outrage. It's baffling, really, when you then consider where they do choose to pick their battles.
Consider today's "call to action" against the Tribeca Film Festival, what essentially boils down to a campaign to have a particular selection -- a self-described "transploitation" film from writer/director Israel Luna called Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives -- removed from the program. Last week, the fest announced the first group of films, which included the World Narrative films, the Documentaries, as well as Showcases and Special Events.
Now, the festival is getting a bit more star-heavy, as films starring such actors as Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Casey Affleck, and even Jessica Alba have joined the list of those titles appearing at the fest.
