Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan had a bad falling out with Kevin Costner, that essentially ended the series’ successful run. However, Sheridan was fully committed to the series which was inspired by all the Western films he saw as a youngster. One film that influenced the Wind River director was the Oscar-winning film Unforgiven. Sheridan approached his icon Clint Eastwood to get permission to use the Unforgiven theme song in one Yellowstone scene.

Eastwood saw the heart in Sheridan’s Western project and allowed him to use Claudia’s Song, something he never allowed other filmmakers to do. The song was written and performed by Eastwood in the 1992 film.

When a relationship becomes stagnant, navigating it can become a juggling act. That’s why communication is key. Communication, however, is not the strong suit of the relationship at the heart of director Nick Rutter’s latest short Skewered, which finds a stricken couple hiding perception-altering secrets from one another. It’s a situation that, in reality, never ends well but Rutter takes the emotional fallout of that inevitable reactionary moment to a whole new level in his delightfully farcical film. Dn invited Rutter – who we first featured on Dn back in 2013 – to join us for a conversation alongside his Lamplight Stories collaborator and Skewered co-writer and producer Ben Richardson about the extensive script work and pre-production planning that went into the tonal evolution of the film, the challenge of building their set from scratch in a freezing cold air base in north Norfolk, and the joy they found in...

When Steven Spielberg was shooting "Raiders of the Lost Ark," he was amazed Harrison Ford's stunt team survived. The first Indiana Jones movie remains a charming action adventure classic, but it took some dedicated stunt performers to pull off the hardcore action set pieces throughout, including star Harrison Ford. The leading man basically did all the stunts that didn't involve risking actual death, which meant he was thrust into the action when the worst that could happen was, y'know, a life-changing injury, horrible maiming, or perhaps the loss of a limb.
Case in point: The famous giant boulder chase scene, which involved Ford running in front of a 12-foot, 300-pound boulder made of fiberglass, wood, and plaster. Shooting this sequence required Ford to race the makeshift rock ten times, prompting Spielberg to remark years later, "He was lucky — and I was an idiot for letting him try it."

“Yellowstone” may have been shut out at the 2022 Emmys, but Paramount+’s Western spinoff “1923” is hoping to break that cycle.
Creator Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the entire first season of the freshman series, has chosen to submit the premiere episode, titled “1923,” for Emmy consideration, Variety can exclusively confirm. In addition, the same kickoff episode will serve as Ben Richardson’s official submission for outstanding directing for a drama.
Read Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions in all categories.
The eight-episode prequel to Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” and sequel to Paramount+’s “1883” follows a generation of the Dutton family during various hardships, including prohibition, drought and the early stages of the Great Depression.

The massive success of the Paramount+ series Yellowstone has led to two prequels that have also been well-received. In the first prequel, 1883, the Duttons are heading west through dangerous events and sweeping landscapes. Along the way, there was a moving scene between Shea (played by Sam Elliot) and Elsa (Isabel May). But according to Elliot, the scene was originally set up to start differently–and he never thought it would work.

1883 is the much-acclaimed prequel to Yosemite. It follows the Dutton family as they travel west toward Oregon. Elliot plays Shea, a former soldier, and widower who is leading the expedition. One of the members of the party is Elsa, a 17-year-old who faces relentless loss on the journey.

Harrison Ford is trying new things of late, and we're all for it. After decades of sticking exclusively to movies, barring that cameo he did for "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" in the '90s, the veteran star has finally waded into the streaming waters and fully immersed himself. His role as rancher Jacob Dutton on Paramount's "Yellowstone" spin-off "1923" has seen him at his gruffest and most resolute, as his character faces the harsh realities of life in rural Montana.
But perhaps the most charmingly surprising role he's taken on is that of Dr. Paul Rhodes in Apple TV+'s "Shrinking," wherein he displays a refreshing comedic sensibility that even surprised his co-star, Jason Segel. And if you ask the 80-year-old, surprising people, including himself, is exactly how he wants to spend his twilight years. Of all the things to finally cause Indiana Jones — the man who specializes in barely escaping life-or-death situations — to falter, it was a telepathic crystal skull. 2008's "Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull" might have made close to $800 million at the box office and received moderately positive reviews, but the film's legacy is undeniable: The fourth Indy film was a low point for the revered saga. Even Steven Spielberg, who's directed every entry in the franchise thus far, claimed he didn't like the story any more than we did and shared fans' incredulity at Indy surviving a nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge.
Much of the disappointment likely stemmed from the fact that audiences had waited 19 years for the return of Harrison Ford's globe-traveling archeologist. With a build-up like that, "Crystal Skull" was always at risk of delivering an anti-climactic experience. Still, star Harrison Ford...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from the finale of 1923 on Paramount+.
Exclusive: The first season of 1923 ended Sunday with Cara’s (Helen Mirren) nephew Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) still far from saving the day in Montana, while the ruthless Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) informed Jacob (Harrison Ford) that he pretty much owns the Duttons after having paid the property taxes on their ranch. Indiana Jones will soon return in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," another globe-trotting entry in the Indy saga that everyone's not really sure about because of a certain Crystal Skull of Akator. Still, franchise star Harrison Ford isn't worried, and has no hard feelings about "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." In fact, he's having a great time of late, forging a new prestige TV career by starring in the Apple TV+ series "Shrinking" alongside Paramount's popular "1923."
Some 40 odd years after Indiana Jones' 1981 debut, 80-year-old Ford can be found weathering blizzards on horseback and spending 10-hour days in the bitter Montana climate for his Paramount show. As Jacob Dutton, the Hollywood vet has shown a startling willingness to take on the physical demands of playing a rancher spending his twilight years protecting his family. But then, he's always preferred to perform as much of the on-screen action as he can.

Actress Anna Kendrick says the opportunity to work with writer/director Edgar Wright is what drew her to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Though a box office bomb, the film has gained a cult following since its release in 2010 mostly due to its highly stylized special effects. Kendrick, however, wasn’t at all sure the film would work on screen when she read the script.
What is ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ about?
Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (which is currently available on Netflix) follows Michael Cera’s Scott on his mission to battle the seven evil ex-boyfriends of his crush, Romona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Meanwhile, he is also playing with his band in an epic Battle of the Bands, warding off his ex-girlfriend (played by Ellen Wong) who he hasn’t quite broken up with yet, and maintaining his slacker cool all the while.

The Paramount+ series "1923" brought us another chapter of the story that creator Taylor Sheridan began with "Yellowstone." Last year we got a single-season prequel series, "1883," which gave us some backstory on the Dutton family who run the Yellowstone Ranch. In "1923," Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the brother of James Dutton (Tim McGraw), who we met in "1883." James and his wife have passed, and Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) are running things now with the help of the remains of James' family. They're battling a range war with sheep herders, the Depression, which hit Montana far earlier than the rest of the United States, the end of Prohibition, and bad conditions for their cattle.

Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) are running the Yellowstone ranch in his place. They are battling it out with sheepherders who have enlisted mining tycoon Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) to try to take the land from the Duttons.
The series shoots in Montana, which is not the easiest environment to work in. Sheridan famously puts his actors through cowboy camp training, and there is a lot of physical work from riding to fight scenes. Not only that, but the weather is pretty brutal. It's something Dalton...

Taylor Sheridan is currently enjoying a great partnership with Paramount+. The writer/director has given the streaming platform a major hit with Yellowstone, which has now sprouted a couple of spin-off prequels in the form of tried-and-true westerns with the television series 1883 and 1923. After 1923 already broke records being the most-watched Paramount+ premiere ever with over 7 million viewers, the company would now announce that the Harrison Ford/Helen Mirren vehicle will be returning for a second season.
In a press release, the studio also prepares the audience for the continuation of the first season, “Returning this Sunday, Feb. 5th, with a new episode, the first season of 1923 introduces a new generation of Duttons led by patriarch Jacob (Ford) and matriarch Cara (Mirren). The series explores the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”

“1923” has lassoed a second season at Paramount+.
Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” prequel stars Harrison Ford as Dutton patriarch Jacob and Helen Mirren as his Irish-born wife Cara. The series follows their generation of the Dutton family as they face pandemics, drought and the end of the Prohibition era in 1920s Montana.
“1923” proved to be a hit early on, becoming the most-watched Paramount+ premiere of all time in the U.S. with 7.4 million viewers. It also received positive reviews, with Variety critic Joshua Alston writing that “Mirren and Ford – both 80-ish, neither a stranger to action badassery – make for such a potent pairing, their chemistry alone is enough to make ‘1923’ feel like an elevated version of Sheridan’s neo-Western fare.”
In addition to Ford and Mirren, the show stars Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Jerome Flynn and Julia Schlaepfer.

If you didn’t like how 1883 ended after just one season, you’re going to love this news: Paramount+ has ordered a second season of 1923.
Just as Deadline first reported in October, Creator Taylor Sheridan needs another season to finish telling the origin story of the Dutton family he made famous in Yellowstone. Besides, there’s always the chance season two could attract the same number of people who first tuned into the premiere of 1923 in December: The prequel that stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren was the most watched Paramount+ premiere ever in the U.S. and drew in 7.4M total viewers across Paramount+ and linear previews.
1923’s linear sampling preview on Paramount Network made it the biggest series premiere on cable for 2022.

Paramount+ is continuing its Dutton family origin story.
The streamer has renewed Yellowstone prequel 1923 for a second season after the drama’s record-breaking first season, where the premiere became the most watched series premiere on cable in 2022.
Taylor Sheridan’s series follows the ancestors of the current Dutton clan of Yellowstone and is led by Harrison Ford’s Jacob and Helen Mirren’s Cara. The newest installment in the family’s origin story takes place in the early 20th century “when pandemics historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home,” according to Paramount+.
1923 picked up a few decades after Sheridan’s first Yellowstone origin series, 1883, which ran for one season and starred Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton. Their daughter Elsa, played by Isabel May, narrated the series and continues to narrate 1923.

Actor Anna Kendrick has stepped into a completely different role in her new movie, Alice, Darling. Anna Kendrick once made embryos with a longtime partner, only for him to turn around and tell her that he had feelings for somebody else.
The actress spoke to Dax Shepard and Monica Padman for the latest episode of their “Armchair Expert” podcast, discussing her experience about being in a toxic relationship.
Without naming names, Kendrick recalled, “I was with someone — this was somebody I lived with, for all intents and purposes my husband. We had embryos together, this was my person.
“And then about six years in, about somewhere around there, I remember telling my brother, when things had first kind of gone down, ‘I’m living with a stranger. Like, I don’t know what’s happening.'”

Taylor Sheridan’s latest installment in the Yellowstone universe, headlined by Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, has set a new benchmark for the prolific creator — and for Paramount+.
1923, which was released over the weekend, was Paramount+’s most watched premiere ever in the U.S., the streamer announced Monday. Apparently, it wasn’t even a close race, with 1923 surpassing the previous record by nearly 80. It eclipsed the debuts of such previous Paramount+ breakouts as Halo and Sheridan’s 1883, Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King.
Overall, 1923′s Dec. 18 premiere drew a 7.4M total viewers across Paramount+ and linear telecasts, which consisted of a premiere on Paramount Network, plus two encores and a run on CMT.
Paramount Global is nor breaking down the viewership, but says that the linear sampling preview on Paramount Network makes it the biggest series premiere on cable for 2022.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Joseph Mawle has been cast in the ‘Yellowstone’ prequel series ‘1923’. He joins a stacked cast that includes Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Ehle, Jerome Flynn, James Badge Dale, Sebastian Roche, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, and Aminah Nieves, reports Variety.
Like ‘1883’ before it, ‘1923’ tells the story of a previous generation of the Dutton family as they work to establish the ranching empire featured in ‘Yellowstone’.
Mawle will star as Captain Shipley, described as “the captain of a British cargo ship, who has seen a lot during his years at sea.”
According to Variety, Mawle recently starred in the first season of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ but exited the series ahead of Season 2. His film credits include ‘In the Heart of the Sea’, ‘Kill Your Friends’, ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ and ‘The Hallow’.

The hourlong pilot of Paramount+’s 1923, the only episode of the Yellowstone prequel made available to critics, is less a template for a compelling ongoing series and more a very loose assemblage of things that are apparently fascinating creator Taylor Sheridan this week.
Indigenous reeducation schools! The Tsavo Man-Eaters of Kenya! Grazing rights!
Maybe the pieces of 1923 will come together eventually and perhaps they’ll even come together quickly — again, I’ve seen only one episode — but in the short run, it’s unlikely that Sheridan’s carefully cultivated core audience will care. Between the star-studded cast led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, the familiar wide-open Big Sky vistas and periodic totemic recitations of the name “Dutton,” 1923 immediately offers plenty to be curious (and potentially irritated) about.

Taylor Sheridan, the creator of “Yellowstone” and tireless workhorse of Paramount+, has already proven himself a prolific writer with a fully articulated vision of the stories he wants to tell. He’s built an impressive slate of dramas populated with cowboys, cobras and compromised cops, including three “Yellowstone” spin-offs. Sheridan could probably continue with his aggressive expansion with Paramount’s blessing. Instead, Sheridan has shrewdly chosen quality over quantity.
“1883,” the first prequel to branch off of “Yellowstone,” was initially presented as an open-ended series that would follow the earliest days of the powerful Dutton family as they led a wagon train westward. But Sheridan thought better of it, deciding instead to treat the “Yellowstone” spinoffs as anthologies. Rather than advancing the season one characters, the next installment of “1883” will star David Oyelowo as Bass Reeves, the real-life Black marshal who racked up boundaries during the same period.

Plot: In 1923, the Dutton family, which is now headed by Jacob (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren), are faced with several challenges, including a crew of violent sheepmen led by the vicious Banner (Jerome Flynn), who will not stop grazing on their territory. Meanwhile, the family’s wayward son, Spenser (Brandon Sklenar), who hasn’t been home since WWI, makes a living hunting rogue lions in Africa but may need to return sooner rather than later.
Review: Who would have thought Yellowstone would spawn such a strong franchise? While a long-time devotee of the show, I was wary of the prequel 1883 when it premiered on Paramount Plus last year, only to quickly become immersed in it. Functioning as a limited series, it told one of the best western tales I’ve seen in ages, and for his follow-up, 1923, showrunner Taylor Sheridan has widened his scope beyond anything we’ve seen in the franchise.

December is the Holiday season, but it might as well also be called the “Yellowstone” season. Taylor Sheridan’s insanely popular modern Western is currently airing its fifth season on the Paramount Network and will soon see the debut of its second Paramount+ prequel series, “1923.”
Like last year’s “1883” with Sam Elliott and country music stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, “1923” looks back at the past history of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in Montana, introducing ancestors of John (Kevin Costner), Kayce (Luke Grimes), Beth (Kelly Reilly), and Jamie (Wes Bentley). But even for those who don’t watch “Yellowstone” and don’t know who these characters are, “1923” definitely has some strong selling points — namely, Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, who lead the cast of the ’20s-set series.
In the United States and Canada, the first episode of “1923” will premiere on Paramount+ starting at 12 a.m.

The “Yellowstone” prequel series “1923” at Paramount+ has added three actors in recurring roles, Variety has learned exclusively.
Peter Stormare, Tim Dekay, and Amelia Rico are now set to appear in the epic western series. The trio joins an expansive ensemble cast that includes stars like Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, and Jerome Flynn.
As the title suggests, the newest prequel series will explore more of the early history of the Yellowstone ranch and the Dutton family.
Stormare will play Lucca, described as “a weathered but wise sailor, tanned from decades on the ocean, his accent a soup of a thousand dialects.”
Dekay will play Bob Strafford, said to be “a Montana rancher who’s anticipating an imminent wedding between his daughter and one of the Duttons.”
Rico will play Issaxche, a Crow woman hoping to reunite with her family.

“Men kill quick with a bullet or a noose. But your fight is with me…and I kill much slower,” warns Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) in the official trailer for the Yellowstone prequel, 1923. The trailer confirms the Duttons have been fighting against outsiders wanting to take their land since the early days of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. It also shows that the Dutton patriarch has always put his family first.
“You attack my family, it’s gonna be the last thing you ever do,” snarls Jacob (Harrison Ford).
In addition to Oscar winner Helen Mirren and Oscar nominee Harrison Ford, the new drama series stars Darren Mann (Animal Kingdom), Michelle Randolph (A Snow White Christmas), James Badge Dale (Hightown), and Marley Shelton (Scream). Additional cast members include Brian Geraghty (Big Sky), Aminah Nieves (Blueberry), and Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones).
The second Yellowstone origin story was created by Taylor Sheridan.

Paramount+ is offering a sneak peek at 1923, Taylor Sheridan’s latest Yellowstone origin story that stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton. The action picks up on familiar grounds in Montana, where fans will see the beginnings of the Dutton homestead that is now featured on Yellowstone.
There are also some welcome new faces on the prequel, like Game of Thrones‘ Jerome Flynn as a local heavy and Timothy Dalton as a wealthy sophisticate with cool wheels who becomes neighbors to the Duttons. That will probably not end well.
1923 also features stars Darren Mann (Animal Kingdom), Michelle Randolph (A Snow White Christmas), James Badge Dale (Hightown), Marley Shelton (Scream), Brian Geraghty (Big Sky), and Aminah Nieves (Blueberry). The trailer dropped during Sunday’s episode of Yellowstone.

The teaser, which offers brief scenes featuring the two lauded actors and the kind of action we've come to expect from such series, but also reunites us with a fan favorite, if in voice only.
Isabel May is back as Elsa Dutton, narrating the teaser, explaining the Dutton family's connection to violence, which has followed them from the Scottish highlands and which they actively seek, despite themselves.
1923, the next installment of the Dutton family origin story, will introduce a new generation of Duttons, led by patriarch Jacob (Ford) and matriarch Cara (Mirren).

Paramount+ has shared a first look at “1923,” the upcoming “Yellowstone” limited series spinoff starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Dutton family leaders Jacob and Cara.
“Violence has always haunted this family,” a narrator says in the trailer. “It followed us here. And when it doesn’t follow, we hunt it down. We seek it.”
The new series is set to run for two seasons, consisting of eight episodes each. “1923” explores the West of the early 20th century, when pandemics, historic drought, Prohibition and the Great Depression all plagued the frontier that the Duttons call home.
In addition to Ford and Mirren, the series also stars Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Julia Schlaepfer and Jerome Flynn.
“1923” is the second prequel series for Taylor Sheridan’s hit series “Yellowstone” following “1883,” which starred Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and aired last winter.

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)
When you think of Paramount TV shows, you probably think of Taylor Sheridan. At this point, the man behind "Yellowstone," "1883," and "Mayor of Kingstown" is the creative architect behind some of the biggest hits on television. He also shows no signs of slowing down. "Yellowstone" may be the crowning jewel of the Paramount Network's original programming, but Sheridan is expanding his narrative reach in several directions with upcoming shows including "Tulsa King," "Land Man," "Lioness," and "1883: The Bass Reeves Story."
One of the most highly-anticipated titles in Sheridan's ever-growing stable of shows, though, is "1923." The second "Yellowstone" spin-off set to explore a bygone era in Dutton family history, and includes a cast that's perhaps even more star-studded...
