A+E Networks has tapped Elaine Frontain Bryant and Eli Lehrer to take on expanded roles for the network as former Lifetime EVP and head of programming Amy Winter announced her exit on Wednesday. Move is the latest in a series of consolidations in basic cable as the linear business faces continued declines.
Winter joined Lifetime in 2020, having previously worked at Discovery and later Up TV as exec VP and Gm. At Lifetime, Winter filled a gig that had been vacant since Liz Gateley exited in 2018. Now that job will once again be retired as Frontain Bryant takes on oversight of all of Lifetime and Lmn programming in addition to her current role overseeing original programming for the flagship A&e brand.
Winter revealed in a memo to staff that she’s “decided to embark on a new path” that will combine “my passion for the creative aspects of entertainment with the business side of our industry.

New wreckage from the notorious 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster was discovered for the first time in over 25 years. The discovery came from an unlikely source: a History Channel series set to premiere later this month.
Titled “The Bermuda Triangle: Into Cursed Waters,” the upcoming six-part series follows a team of underwater investigators as they identify wrecks in the western part of the North Atlantic region — where the so-called Bermuda Triangle, known in urban legends as a place where many ships have disappeared, is located. According to The History Channel, during shooting for the series last March, the crew attempted to find the wreckage of a Pbm Martin Mariner Rescue Plane that disappeared in 1945, only to discover a 2o-foot segment of a modern aviation structure in the depths of the water.
After a second dive, the team presented their findings to retired astronaut Bruce Melnick, who identified it as possible wreckage from Challenger.

Two decades after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, documentary filmmakers are still trying to make sense of the horrific events — even as aftereffects continue to ripple through the geopolitical landscape.
The U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan has renewed political debate over the invasion launched in the wake of the 2001 attacks as conspiracy theories about 9/11 permeate discourse about the events. In a measure of how fraught the subject remains, Spike Lee cut 30 minutes of 9/11 truther material from the fourth and final episode of his HBO documentary, “NYC Epicenters 9/11-2021½,” after initially releasing it to the media for review and stoking further controversy by discussing his doubts in a New York Times interview about how the twin towers were destroyed.
Filmmakers and TV programmers acknowledge that these projects require delicate treatment — especially concerning graphic scenes of the attacks and their aftermath — but stress that 9/11 is an important topic to tackle.

Instead, the duo will lean into their real-life friendship and tried-and-true on-screen chemistry for a “kind of a live version of ‘Tool Time,'” Allen explained, while spotlighting the best and brightest makers from across the country with a can-do attitude and a competitive streak.
During the network’s Television Critics Association winter press tour panel Thursday, star Allen and host Karn gave the rundown on the new hourly 10-episode reality show, joined by the series’ own resident expert April Wilkerson (known best for her DIY woodworking and metalworking videos on YouTube), and Brent Montgomery, executive producer.
“Assembly Required” pits three builders head-to-head as they hammer, chop, arrange and assemble mind-blowing creations out of everyday household items in desperate need of fixing.

What time is it? Well, it’s almost time for “Home Improvement” stars Tim Allen and Richard Karn to reunite for new History channel competition “Assembly Required,” a project that’s a perfect fit for two guys who hosted the fictional handyman show “Tool Time” for eight years.
But Allen says he “never even thought about” having Karn host this series, which he called “kind of a live version of ‘Tool Time.'”
“My only hesitation was I didn’t want to embarrass myself,” Allen told reporters during a virtual panel for “Assembly Required” at the Television Critics Association winter press tour Thursday, ahead of the show’s Tuesday, Feb. 23 premiere at 10/9c on the History channel.
“We’re very similar to the characters we play in that show,” Allen said.

The History Channel has ordered a two-hour documentary film called ‘Tulsa Burning” about the 1921 Greenwood massacre in Tulsa, one of the worst acts of racist violence in American history.
The documentary will be directed by “Freedom Riders” filmmaker Stanley Nelson along with duPont Award winner Marco Williams, and NBA superstar Russell Westbrook will executive produce the documentary along with Donnell Beverly, president of Russell Westbrook Enterprises.
“Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre” (working title) will debut later this summer to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the massacre, in which a mob of white residents, many of them even deputized by city officials, attacked Black residents and burned local businesses and houses to the ground, destroying what was the wealthiest Black neighborhood in the country at the time known as “Black Wall Street.” Initial reports from the time recorded 36 people dead and thousands of Black residents interned in hospitals and large facilities.

The History Channel is building out its plans to move back into the miniseries space with two new scripted projects – a drama about the London plague from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and a series about the Donner Party from documentary filmmaker Ric Burns.
The A+E Networks-owned cable channel is developing The Plague Year through A+E Studios, its in-house production division, and The Donner Party (w/t) from Cineflix Media, Steeplechase Films and Augusta Films.
The network is looking to build on its legacy of miniseries such as Hatfields & McCoys, starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton, which was a huge hit when it launched in 2012.

Just what we need, another reminder about the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, History Channel ordered two new scripted miniseries as part of its move back to limited series, and one of them focuses on the Bubonic Plague breakout in 1665 London. The other is about the Donner Party, which didn’t go much better.
“The Plague Year” hails from A+E Studios and is being written by Coleman Herbert and executive produced by Michael Hirst, who has a “Vikings” connection with History. “The Donner Party” is written by Ric Burns, who will executive produce alongside Nancy Buirski.

History Channel is developing a pair of drama miniseries, including one executive produced by “Vikings” creator Michael Hirst.
The first is titled “The Plague Year,” which hails from writer Coleman Herbert with Hirst executive producing. The series is described as a portrait of 1665 London, during one of the all-time worst outbreaks of the Bubonic Plague. As Londoners of all stripes flee in droves, those who remain in the city, whether by choice or by fate, find their resolves tested and old wounds reopened, as they are faced with an impossible question: how do you keep going when everything around you has fallen to pieces? A+E Studios will produce.

Daredevil Axell Hodges sustained serious injuries in a crash during a practice jump, ands will no longer ride in History’s upcoming “Evel Live 2,” the network announced Friday. The live event, airing this Sunday, is being reformatted to include footage of his crash, though it will still feature Vicki Golden’s live attempt to break the motorcycle firewall world record.
“Having a crash ahead of something you’ve been working so hard toward just plain sucks,” Hodges said. “The team and I were making a lot of progress during testing and the distances we were approaching looked good for Sunday’s event. Unfortunately, I made a mistake in air and wasn’t able to adjust in time for landing. I’m shocked I’m not in worse shape and feel extremely grateful to have been able to get up from this crash.”

The History Channel and Sylvester Stallone are working together on a new police drama series that’s set in New York City in the early 1900s. The series is called Tenderloin, and Stallone will produce and direct several episodes of the series.
The series “revolves around the true story of Charles Becker, a corrupt New York City cop who led the Strong-Arm Squad tasked with trying to keep order in a neighborhood overrun with ethnic gangs in the Tammany Hall era of New York politics. Becker wound up becoming the first — and to date only — police officer to face the death penalty for murder.”
Damn! That certainly sounds like it’s going to be an intense series and something that I know I’ll want to watch. It’s also a perfect project for Stallone to be a part of, and it’s cool that he’ll be bringing his...
