Beyoncé hasn’t released a straightforward pop album, really ever, but generally since 2008. Since then, she changed how music is released with Beyoncé, created a cultural opus on Lemonade, secured her rap crown with Everything Is Love, danced all night on Renaissance, and rode off into the sunset on Cowboy Carter. These explorations were possible, mainly because she had already mastered the pop form. And while she’s exploring new genres and new configurations of how to combine them, she can rest easy knowing that the main pop girls — plus...

Tucked away in Tarzana is a stately home designed as a style and social haven, where any customer who needs a fashion fix or wants to learn or engage in thoughtful ideas is welcome to participate. That’s been the plan of star stylist Zerina Akers since she first saw her new headquarters.
“In addition to wanting this to be a creative space, I wanted to forge a community in which everyone would feel welcome,” says Akers of Saint Helen’s House, a social-club space that includes a sustainable fashion-rental showroom she has dubbed “The Show Must Go On.”
“It was a simple decision to open the doors to everyone. It’s not just celebrities and styling; every woman can come in and enjoy a celebrity styling experience.”

While much of the focus of Victoria Monét’s triple-Grammy haul was on her best new artist win, another trophy represents a historic victory that could help break down more barriers for all women in the music industry — her win for best engineered album.
The white-hot singer-songwriter is the first Black woman to win the award in the show’s 66-year history, since she co-engineered her major-label debut album, Jaguar II.
She is the fourth woman to take home the coveted Grammy, following previous wins by Imogen Heap, Trina Shoemaker and Emily Lazar. When Monét — who writes and produces her music and has crafted hits for Ariana Grande, Blackpink, Chloe x Halle and Chris Brown — speaks to THR a few weeks after that magical night to reflect on the groundbreaking milestone, she says, “It’s a beautiful thing.”
But she also adds that “it says a lot” about the industry.

The Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2024 Grammys on Friday, and with 94 categories, it’s a lot to digest. But we’re here to help — read our breakdown of the 17 Grammys facts you should know.
Femme Fatale
Male performers make up more than two-thirds of the winners of album of the year in Grammys history — but it’s ladies night at the 2024 show. Women count for seven of the eight nominees in the top category, including Sza, Olivia Rodrigo, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monáe, boygenius and Taylor Swift, who can make history as the first performer to win the award four times.
And female acts own seven of the eight slots in the song and record of the year categories, with artists like Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Victoria Monét pulling in major nominations. And behind the scenes in those major categories, producers and engineers are nominated like Catherine Marks,...

The 66th Grammy nominations are just days away, and one of the most exciting races is Best New Artist, a category that can make or break a career. Usually an amalgamation of some of the biggest genres around, the award typically has a great mix of huge breakouts and hidden gems. But among so many worthy debutantes, which eight will make up the class of 2024?
The biggest lock for a nomination this year is Ice Spice. The Bronx rapper has made waves with her infectious style and collaborations with big artists like Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress, Lil Tjay, and Taylor Swift. Such major collaborations are already a big deal, but Ice has also scored hits on her own, like “In Ha Mood” and “Deli.” Following her victory at the 2023 VMAs for Best New Artist, Ice might continue her hot streak with a Grammy victory, especially with possible support from both rap and pop voters.

We’ve been here before, haven’t we? A Disney live-action remake igniting a round of existential debate? This time it’s Rob Marshall’s interpretation of The Little Mermaid, based on John Musker and Ron Clement’s 1989 version and starring Halle Bailey as the titular sea creature. It features new music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and wrings as much as possible from the corporation’s CGI budget.
The questions raised by this faithful adaptation are familiar, but answering them only matters to an extent. Nostalgia pays in cash, correctives in publicity. For the global conglomerate’s bottom line, remaking classics is worth it. That these already tempered fairytales are retrofitted for contemporary audiences is merely a bonus.
Marshall’s Ariel (Bailey) is Black — a choice that sent scores of people clutching their pearls and reverting to racist protestations. Their complaints of a nonexistent white erasure are littered across the internet under the hashtag #NotMyAriel.

Exclusive: After a herniated disc during a Cats performance prompted Rob Marshall to switch from dancer to director, his first feature, Chicago, won Best Picture. It has been a charmed run for Marshall since, with hits from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to Memoirs of a Geisha, Nine, Annie, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns. Rarely has Marshall been as charged up as he is after coming through a four-year ordeal to turn Disney’s 1989 2-D animated classic musical The Little Mermaid into a live action feature. Beyond the logistical complexities of staging a musical set half undersea and the other half on land where the title character sacrifices her voice for a chance at life as a human, the film is the most color blind major studio adaptation of a classic property you’ve ever seen.

One of the big surprises at last month’s BET Awards was hearing Jazmine Sullivan’s “Heaux Tales” announced as the Album of the Year. The album certainly has the acclaim to merit the title, but the category often goes to higher-profile albums, with past winners including Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” and Roddy Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial.” So it seemed like The Weeknd’s “After Hours” or Megan Thee Stallion’s “Good News” would take home the big prize. Could this upset have implications for the Grammys? I think so.
The BET Awards aren’t necessarily a precursor for the Grammys, but they are one of the few peer-voted award shows left in music. As such, a lot of their winners indicate where the wind is blowing in the industry, particularly in rap and R&b fields. The relatively new Album of the Year category (it was...

After seven months apart, Chloe and Halle Bailey reunited on their Chloe x Halle Instagram account for "tea time." To kick things off, the duo did an impromptu rendition of Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's "See You Again" to show just how much they've missed being together. "You have no idea how excited we are," Halle told her followers. While Chloe's been working on solo music and performing, Halle has been filming The Little Mermaid in Italy. Chloe didn't waste any time asking Halle about the highlights of Europe. "How was it being Ariel, for how long?" the 23-year-old asked her sister. "You're still Ariel, you will always be Ariel." Of course, Halle responded by telling Chloe just how much she missed her. You can catch their full "tea time" in the video above.

A year after the BET Awards became one of the first major awards to take place during the pandemic (two days after the Daytime Emmys ran via a virtual event), the ceremony will return next month as the first to invite vaccinated fans to be a part of the audience.
BET announced Tuesday that the 2021 BET Awards will return with a live event on Sunday, June 27, from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live. The network will invite vaccinated individuals to register (starting May 27) for consideration to be a part of the audience. BET said it will “work closely with Los Angeles County to support community vaccination efforts and ensure adherence to Covid-19 protocols.”
BET president Scott Mills said he hoped the BET Awards announcement would help lend to vaccination awareness. The network has helped raise more than $19 million to assist people impacted by Covid-19.

Like seemingly all the awards shows this season, the 63rd Grammy Awards were filled with surprises, ranging from unprecedented record-breaking splits to a significant number of upsets. Not only that, we also saw a lot of solid trends broken this year, much like we saw in the nominations earlier in the season. Let’s take a dive into the biggest and weirdest moments of the night.
SEE2021 Grammy winners list: 63rd Annual Grammy results in all 84 categories
Splits everywhere
The Grammys are infamously known for sweeps, so to see Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Brittany Howard all leave with one Grammy apiece was definitely odd. It was especially weird because Styles edged out Lipa for Pop Solo, yet Lipa defeated him and Taylor Swift for Pop Vocal Album, and then Swift beat Lipa for Album of the Year despite not winning anything else.

Chloe x Halle premiered the video for “Ungodly Hour” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday.
The title track to their recent album, the video was directed by Alfred Marroquín and features the sibling duo in shiny blue bodysuits, hooked up to machinery and fluorescent lights. They’re later accompanied by backup dancers as they swim and balance candelabras on their heads.
The sisters recently spoke to Rolling Stone for the annual Women Shaping the Future issue, where they honored their mentor Beyoncé, who runs their label, Parkwood Entertainment.

For this year’s annual Women Shaping the Future issue, we asked 12 of today’s top musical acts to talk about the women who have inspired them most in their lives and careers. Here, Chloe x Halle talk about their mentor, Beyoncé — who runs their label, Parkwood Entertainment — and share what they’ve learned from her example.
Beyoncé is the true definition of what it is to be yourself and work hard and give it your all. As young artists and as young black women who watch her, you automatically know your worth.

Much like other major award shows, nominees for the Grammys often go on big media tours in order to promote themselves and their nominated work in hopes of boosting their chances of a possible win. While Grammy campaigning is definitely not as in-your-face as Oscar campaigning, it can still help keep artists in the public eye and potentially sway votes their way. After winners last year like Billie Eilish, Lizzo, and Lil Nas X did their campaigning due, let’s see who did theirs for this year’s ceremony.
One of this year’s biggest campaigners has been Dua Lipa, nominated for six awards including Album, Record, and Song of the Year. Lipa got a coveted spot on the “SNL” Christmas episode hosted by series alum Kristen Wiig, where she performed her three-time nominated song “Don’t Start Now.” Lipa also stopped at other spots, including Netflix’s “SongExploder,” where...

Times Square in New York will be closed to the public Thursday night for New Year’s Eve celebrations, the first time there won’t be a crowd at the iconic locale on December 31 since the first ball drop in 1907 (the first celebration at One Times Square in Manhattan was in 1904). But in a year in which the entertainment industry has had to adjust to a virtual stage, the show will go on and the ball will still drop at midnight.
Official Times Square New Year’s Eve co-organizers Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment will present a six-hour commercial-free webcast (closed to the public and following New York state health protocols), with Jonathan Bennett returning as host. It will include performances from Andra Day, Gloria Gaynor, the Uso Show Troupe and The Waffle Crew. Other New York-based performers on the night among the various broadcast and cable networks, which...

Despite this year’s best efforts, 2020 will in fact still end at midnight on Dec. 31.
To mark the occasion, multiple broadcast networks are still planning to hold their annual New Years Eve specials on Thursday night as the ball drops over Times Square in New York City. But like everything else this year, those specials will see a few changes from their normal operations.
As in years past, the specials will feature some pre-taped performances as well as multiple locations from which they will broadcast, such as New York, Los Angeles, and New Orleans.
The most noticeable change will be the crowd in Times Square. Whereas the iconic New York location has held upwards of one million people in past years, this year there will only be about 150 invited guests in attendance. They are being called “The Heroes of 2020” and will be made up of front line workers, first responders,...

Each year, artists and labels do their best to improve their Grammy Awards chances, typically through performances as well as FYC events and packages. With Covid making some typical campaigning resources difficult this year, artists had fewer promotional opportunities. However, a lot still worked, so let’s see what has succeeded and hasn’t in the past few years.
1. Increase TV performances
TV performances were more important than ever due to this season’s otherwise limited resources for getting your name and your music out there. Nominees like Doja Cat, BTS, Dua Lipa, and Phoebe Bridgers appeared in a variety of TV shows and specials, which could’ve helped tremendously. Shows like Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show”, Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show”, and “Saturday Night Live” may have been key to getting those artists on voters’ radar.
