Yang Heng, a graduate from the Beijing Film Academy with a major in photography, made his debut in 2006 with “Betelnut” (2006), a plotless mood piece about aimless youth. He shot it himself in very long, static takes, and the film won him several international awards. He achieved an increasingly sophisticated formal style in his three following features: “Sun Spots” (2008), “Lake August” (world premiere IFFR 2014) and “Ghost In the Mountains” (2017)—each with the aid of a different cinematographer. His stunning new film “Silent Ghosts” had its world premiere at IFFR; Yang couldn’t attend the festival, but provided some comments via email.
Silent Ghosts screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam

Exactly how much bigger can reggaeton get? This is a perpetually grating question that’s followed the genre around as it’s skyrocketed to the very center of the mainstream over the last few years and become one of the most omnipresent sounds on the planet. To naysayers, the music represents an annoyingly large bubble that’ll pop and fizzle out any day now, while fans and artists are hell-bent on proving that there’s limitless space for it to keep growing. Unfortunately, certain acts — driven by the popularity, profitability,...

Elaborate album rollouts usually aren’t Bad Bunny‘s style — most of his projects have dropped into the universe in an unexpected, last-minute burst of chaos, excitement, and social media freakouts. His latest, Un Verano Sin Ti, has been a little different: The Puerto Rican singer started posting playful Instagram videos in January that extended a running gag about him leaving his girlfriend Gabriela Berlingeri with the handsome Spanish actor Mario Casa all summer so he could work on new songs. From there, he kept sharing short clips of Casa...

What would spooky season be without the Sanderson Sisters? Thanks to Freeform, we’ll never have to find out.
The cable network’s annual 31 Nights of Halloween lineup features 14 showings of Hocus Pocus, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — and while that may seem like a lot, keep in mind that Freeform aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019. (Of course, you can watch Hocus Pocus as many times as you’d like with a subscription to Disney+, but who are we to suggest a commercial-free viewing experience?)

World premiering in Fantasia sidebar Documentaries from the Edge, Emilio Silva Torres’ feature debut “Straight to VHS” takes you down the rabbit hole of his investigation into a rare film that spawned a cult following in Uruguay.
The documentary, co-produced by Uruguay’s Tarkiofilm and Argentina’s Trivial Media, delves into the mystery behind the making of the quirky film “Act of Violence on a Young Journalist,” released straight to video in 1989, and its even more enigmatic filmmaker, Manuel Lamas. Both films are presented as a double bill in Canada’s 25th Fantasia Int’l Film Festival, marking the first time “Act of Violence…” has ever screened outside of Uruguay.

It’s hard to believe that the 2021 Fantasia Film Festival is set to kick off once again later this week already, but here we are. From August 5th through August 25th, Fantasia will feature more than 100 different features and shorts from around the globe to entertain genre fans throughout the month. And while it was hard to whittle down our list to just 11 films, this writer highly encourages everyone who will be attending Fantasia (whether in person or virtually) to check out the festival’s incredibly diverse lineup Here, because there’s an amazing assortment of projects that are being celebrated by the fest this year.
It’s also worth noting that some of the Fantasia 2021 selections have appeared at previous festivals, so it didn’t seem fair to include them here since we’ve already covered them. Those titles include Broadcast Signal Intrusion, Coming Home in the Dark, The Feast,...

A country house. A quarrelling couple. A swimming pool. An infant floating face down. The Blazing World makes clear reference to Don’t Look Now in its opener, only this time we have an operatic score and Udo Kier standing next to a black hole, beckoning the dead infant’s young sister to follow him to an alternate dimension. It makes a pretty strong impression, setting the tone for a film that makes a show of its high production values.
Things progress quite nicely hereafter, albeit for just 20 minutes or so. Carlson Young gives a good performance as Margaret Winter, the surviving infant who is now a young woman, and she has chemistry with her parents, the still quarrelling Alice (Vinessa Shaw) and Tom (Dermot Mulroney). Those production values give it a good look, too. Offbeat camera angles are paired with stylish grading and full-bodied colours, creating frames that can be genuinely painterly,...

Disney is making moves on Cannes market titles.
The company has acquired the rights to the upcoming animated pic “Dalia and the Red Book” across all of Latin America. Disney plans to release the film, which mixes CGI, stop-motion and 2D animation, in late 2022 or early 2023.
“Dalia and the Red Book” hails from Argentine director David Bisbano (“A Mouse Tale”) and is described as “The NeverEnding Story” meets “Corpse Bride.”
It centers around Dalia (12), the daughter of a famous writer who has recently died. After his death, Dalia is left to finish her father’s unfinished book. In order to do so, she will become part of the book and come face-to-face with the characters who have taken over the plot in their struggle to play the leading roles.
FilmSharks Intl. is handling the world sales for “Dalia and the Red Book,” which is currently in discussions for other major territories at Cannes.

Consider an odd occurrence: my generation––the millennials––are really feeling tarot and astrology at the moment. There are many pop-psychological interpretations for this: trying to distinguish ourselves from the stricter religious beliefs of our elders, or growing up amidst an economic decline that has made our futures foggier and more provisional-seeming. But there’s an aesthetic explanation that chimes with the influencer-driven social media landscape of TikTok and Instagram, and which rising Greek filmmaker Jacqueline Lentzou’s debut feature Moon, 66 Questions seems one of the first to properly capture.

FX will not renew Mr Inbetween, confirming that the show’s upcoming third season will be its last.
Created, written by and starring Scott Ryan, the Sydney-shot series follows charismatic yet volatile hitman Ray Shoesmith as he juggles his roles of father, ex-husband, boyfriend, and criminal for hire.
The character was first introduced in Ryan’s 2005 mockumentary The Magician.
Mr Inbetween is directed by The Magician editor and producer Nash Edgerton, and produced by Michele Bennett, who also produced the original film.
In what is to be the final season of the Blue-Tongue Films and Pariah Production series, Ray’s world has contracted.
Household life appears to be just a little totally different as he quietly mourns the lack of Bruce, whereas determining how you can take care of his growing old father, Invoice (Kenny Graham).

Given the title is basically a Schitt pun, it’s perhaps surprising that Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek is one of the sweetest most nuanced shows around. Written by and starring father and son Eugene and Dan Levy it follows the Rose family, once extremely affluent, now entirely bankrupt after a tax scandal. The only asset they are allowed to retain is the town of Schitt’s Creek, which Johnny Rose bought for his son David as a joke.
If you haven’t seen the show – well go and watch it immediately (and also spoilers) but know that it takes a couple of episodes to really get into it. Once you’re in, you’re in.

According to TorontoFilm.Net, Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro ("The Shape of Water") has wrapped his Searchlight Pictures feature "Nightmare Alley", based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham, starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, David Strathairn and Willem Dafoe, now preparing for a December 2021 release:
"...a corrupt con-man teams up with a female psychiatrist to trick people into giving them money."
"...'in the 1947 feature, 'Nightmare Alley' starring Tyrone Power, Joan Blondell and Coleen Gray, 'Stanton Carlisle' watches the geek show at a carnival asking worker 'Clem Hoately' where 'geeks' come from. Clem explains that geeks are 'made', when a sideshow owner finds an alcoholic bum and offers him a temporary job with a steady supply of liquor.
"Initially, the bum is only asked to pretend to be a geek, using a razor blade to slice chickens' necks and then faking the drinking of the blood.

A new posthumous Ennio Morricone collection, Morricone Segreto, featuring seven previously unreleased tracks, will be released November 6th via Decca Records, Variety reports.
The collection covers a rich creative period for Morricone, from the end of the Sixties through the early Eighties, and the songs are culled from slightly lesser-known Morricone endeavors (at least compared to classics like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly or Once Upon a Time in America). We didn’t know it when docu-helmer Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, The Unknown Known) signed up for it last July, but by the looks of several industry players, he might have landed on the best screenplay of the bunch.
The annual “The Black List” unveiled its “favorite unproduced screenplays” of the year, and ranking at the top with a slim margin of a lead was Andrew Sodroski’s Holland, Michigan – a project that should begin lensing in April of next year with Naomi Watts possibly toplining. The second place top vote-getter got a lot more than a set of steak knifes this year. The out-of-nowhere, complete obscurity to huge pay day Section 6 by first time scribe Aaron Berg garnered huge interest towards the end of the year and should be jettisoned into production by the Universal folks – look for big name talent to be attached sometime in...

With all the mindless sequels and reboots that Hollywood has churned out over the last few years, it’s always nice when something original and well-written can break through and get a studio release. Unfortunately, many quality scripts can spend years without ever reaching the right executive to give it the green light. In an effort to make the process a little bit better, former production executive Franklin Leonard started The Black List in 2004. Today, the site announced its ninth annual list of the best unproduced scripts.
To come up with the list, nominations are received from over 250 executives. If a film gets 6 nominations, it gets a spot on the list. The more executives that nominate it, the higher on the list it is. Production for last year’s top film, Draft Day, is underway with the theatrical release scheduled for April, so there’s a pretty good chance that...

Horror films mean scares and thrills. And scares and thrills put bums on seats and popcorn in mouths. A certain proportion of the cinema viewing population loves Horror. Traditionally not taken seriously as a genre or pooh poohed by snobby film academics, I maintain that the horror film community is the most tightly knit, most knowledgeable and most laid-back group on the Net.
Most of us horror fans have sampled all of the major genre staples – Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist etc. – and while we appreciate these films as masterpieces, there is usually, in the serious horror fan, a desire to delve more deeply into the genre.
This can lead to dodgy ground. Crap acting, lame special effects and poor directing. In any other genre films with these attributes would be scorned. However, with Horror, some of us find them quite endearing. Perhaps we like the overall mood of...

The term “giallo” initially referred to cheap yellow paperbacks (printed American mysteries from writers such as Agatha Christie), that were distributed in post-fascist Italy. Applied to cinema, the genre is comprised of equal parts early pulp thrillers, mystery novels, with a willingness to gleefully explore onscreen sex and violence in provocative, innovative ways. Giallos are strikingly different from American crime films: they value style and plot over characterization, and tend towards unapologetic displays of violence, sexual content, and taboo exploration. The genre is known for stylistic excess, characterized by unnatural yet intriguing lighting techniques, convoluted plots, red herrings, extended murder sequences, excessive bloodletting, stylish camerawork and unusual musical arrangements. Amidst the ‘creative kill’ set-pieces are thematic undercurrents along with a whodunit element, usually some sort of twist ending. Here is my list of the best giallo films – made strictly by Italian directors, so don’t expect Black Swan, Amer or...
