‘Alien: Romulus’ is right around the corner, so it’s the perfect time to check out ‘Lily C.A.T.,’ an anime body horror classic that’s a gory tribute to ‘Alien’ and ‘The Thing’.
“Confine them? We’re on a ship. We’re practically confined ourselves.”
Ridley Scott’s Alien is an iconic horror/science fiction hybrid that’s had its ups and downs as a film franchise, but remains an essential genre film 45 years later. Alien is such a tried and true property with limitless potential that it’s kind of remarkable that there hasn’t been an Alien animated series or in-universe anime that’s in the vein of The Animatrix that translates this iconic sci-fi horror property into animated madness where it can really let loose and not be confined by live-action’s limitations. An unreleased Alien vs. Predator anime is the closest thing that audiences have gotten to this,...

The Russo Brithers (“Captain America: Civil War”) continue developing a live-action feature, adapting the 1970's animated TV series "Battle Of The Planets".
In North America, the original "Battle of the Planets" animated series was produced in 1978 by Sandy Frank Entertainment, adapting the 1972 Japanese anime series "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman".
Premise follows 'G-Force', 'Mark', 'Jason', 'Princess', 'Keyop' and 'Tiny', who protect Earth from planet 'Spectra' and other attacks from beyond space, led by the evil 'Zoltar' who receives orders from the wraith-like 'Luminous One'.
The main ship of the G-Force team is the 'Phoenix' deploying four smaller vehicles, including a futuristic race car with various hidden weapons, the 'galacti-cycle', the 'Space Bubble' all-terrain submersible tank and a futuristic jet fighter.
The G-Force team themselves use a combination of martial arts skills, ninja-like weapons and 'cerebonic' powers to dispatch enemy soldiers, in bird-like costumes with capes that fan out, enabling gliding from great heights.

"Robotech," which was the American adaptation of three unrelated Japanese anime TV series edited into one, aired in the United States back in 1985. Though I was more of a "Battle of the Planets" sort of kid, I was certainly aware of it. In the series, an alien ship crashed on Earth, and humans used the technology to create giant mecha to battle an looming alien invasion. Though there were failed attempts to make a film version of the anime before, a new attempt has just nabbed a director. According to Deadline, Rhys Thomas, who directed three of the six episodes of Marvel's Disney+ series "Hawkeye," will...

“Voltron” has long been a beloved anime property from the 1980s and like “Transformers,” “Gundam,” “Battle of The Planets,” and “Robotech,” is another sci-fi animated series heading towards the big screen with a high-profile feature film in the works. The Hollywood Reporter says that “Red Notice” director Rawson Marshall Thurber is set to helm and co-write a film with the pitch and teaser reel being sent out to multiple studios leading to a bidding war.

Exclusive: Aloft Strategic Communications has hired Rebecca Taylor as a partner. The boutique firm was founded by veteran publicist Michael Donkis in April.
Taylor was most recently VP, Talent at Jonesworks, and before that, a VP at Rogers & Cowan Pmk, working with Robert Downey Jr., Patty Jenkins and Christopher McQuarrie, among others. The move is a reunion of sorts for Taylor and Donkis, as both worked closely together at Prime, a boutique firm run by Donkis and Joy Fehily, which was absorbed by Pmk-bnc in 2016.
“Rebecca is one of the smartest, hardest working, ethical and caring publicists I’ve worked alongside,” Donkis tells Deadline. “She has a sterling reputation and is a perfect fit for Aloft. While I’ve enjoyed calling her ‘friend’ for some time, I’m very excited to now call her ‘partner’ as well.”

The heroes the Russo Brothers assembled at Comic-Con this year are all boys in blue. Rather than introducing a new superhero story at their Hall-h panel on Friday, the “Avengers: Endgame” directors dropped a trailer for their gritty cop drama “21 Bridges.”
They did, however, recruit Marvel alum Chadwick Boseman (aka Black Panther) to star in “21 Bridges” as a detective who has a reputation for hunting cop killers. In the new trailer, Boseman goes to work investigating a robbery involving two experienced shooters that left eight police officers dead.
“This is either dumb luck, or a set up,” Boseman’s character says. “There cannot be a version of this where these two aren’t found.”

He then delivers orders to the NYPD to shut down all 21 bridges leading into and out of Manhattan until the killers are found.

Joe and Anthony Russo held court for a capacity crowd during their San Diego Comic-Con Hall H victory lap, and while the directors of several Marvel films, including “Avengers: Endgame”, didn’t have any in-person guests at their panel, they had plenty of celebrity missives submitted via video, much to the delight of fans.
Here’s a few of the best moments, brought to you courtesy of your favorite Avengers.
Mark Ruffalo, Aka Bruce Banner Aka the Hulk sent in a question for the brothers, asking them if now that Banner and Hulk have come to terms with each other, if that means that if Smart Hulk is now the smartest and the strongest Avenger.
Joe was skeptical, pointing out that a lot of people consider Tony Stark to be the smartest Avenger – Rip – and Anthony made the excellent point that many people consider Shuri from “Black Panther” to be the smartest Avenger.

The Russo Brothers are producing an adaptation of a cult favorite graphic novel series called Grimjack.
At the same panel where the Russos revealed an adaptation of Battle of the Planets and a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, the brothers also announced a film adaptation of a relatively obscure comic known as Grimjack.
We don't know much definitive information about this upcoming adaptation, but much like Battle of the Planets, the Russos are officially producing the Grimjack adaptation and leaving room for the possibility of directing it.
Unlike the Battle of the Planets adaptation, which is set to be a movie, there's some debate at the moment regarding whether or not Grimjack is going to be a film or TV series. Different outlets are reporting different information (with some saying that it will be an Amazon series), which tends to suggest that plans may not be...

The Russo Brothers announced at Sdcc 2019 that they will produce a Thomas Crown Affair remake starring Michael B. Jordan.
It's the Russo Brothers world and we're all just living in it.
Among the many new projects that the Avengers: Endgame directors announced during their San Diego Comic-Con 2019 appearance, one will bring them together with another critical part of the Marvel Cinematic universe. The Russo Brother's will be producing a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair starring Black Panther's Erik Killmonger, himself, Michael B. Jordan.
The Thomas Crown Affair first premiered in 1968. It starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway and told the story of a millionaire playboy who wants to orchestrate the perfect crime. A remake starring Pierce Brosnan was produced in 1999 and was well received. A second remake has been kicking around Hollywood since 2016 and now the Russos are finally going to make it work with the help of Mr.

“Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo will produce an adaptation of the indie comic “GrimJack” and develop a live-action version of the classic cartoon “Battle of the Planets,” the duo announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.
Both projects will be developed through their Agbo banner. They will not direct “GrimJack” however, they might direct the “Battle of the Planets” movie. No screenwriter is currently attached to write “Battle of the Planets,” with Joe Russo adding the project is “very early days.” Both projects join their previously announced titles “Cherry,” which stars “Spider-Man” headliner Tom Holland, and a reboot of “The Thomas Crown Affair” with Michael B. Jordan.

We already know that the Russo Brothers are tackling the Ptsd/drug abuse film “Cherry” as their “Avengers: Endgame” follow-up. This announcement made it seem like maybe the Russos were tired of big-budget action spectacle filmmaking. However, at a panel at San Diego Comic-Con (via Collider), it appears that the directors might actually return to the world of blockbuster filmmaking with an adaptation of the classic anime series “Battle of the Planets.”
The Russos were discussing their future at Sdcc when they announced that their production company Agbo had acquired the rights to the Japanese anime series “Battle of the Planets” (aka “Gatchaman”).

Today at Comic-Con, Joe and Anthony Russo announced projects that their AGBO Studios are in development on: an adaptation of the 1978 Japanese anime series Battle of the Planets and an Amazon series based on the graphic novel Grimjack Comics.
Battle of the Planets was originally created by Tatsuo Yoshida and Tatsunoko Studios and was arguably the first mainstream glimpse for U.S. audiences into Japanese anime during the late 1970s. In addition, it was one of the few sci-fi cartoons during that era. The series follows five young orphans who are trained from a young age to form an elite, intergalactic team known as G-Force, swearing to protect Earth and its allies from otherworldly invading forces.

In a Comic-Con year where many motion major picture studios are sitting on the sidelines, the Russo brothers ratcheted up the excitement and beamed in via video a slew of friends, who largely had fan-questions about Avengers i.e. Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Robert Downey Jr and Tom Holland.
Holland talked about his next movie, Cherry, which Joe and Anthony Russo are shooting in October. The pic will take place and shoot near their hometown of Cleveland. It’s based on the Knopf novel and parallels the true story of the author, a former Army medic who returned from Iraq with extreme un-diagnosed Ptsd and fell into opioid addiction and began robbing banks. The brothers said today that the movie will be rated R.
“It’s a story about drug addiction and the opioid crisis,” said Joe Russo. “It’s touched us both, it’s a deeply personal movie for us.

Japan may not appear to be a particularly surprising choice for the spotlight nation at the 2019 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. But since 1999, when Annecy last so honored Japan, much has changed, and 2019 finds Japanese animation bursting with creative and commercial potential and sitting on the verge of a global breakout.
“The focus on Japan makes sense from an industry perspective in terms of just the level of productions and global audience,” says Dave Jesteadt, president of Gkids, U.S. distributor for many Japanese animated films, including the oeuvre of Hayao Miyazaki and several of the films playing the festival. “The Annecy team has done a great job in terms of matching that focus with films to back it up.”
This year, four of the 18 films in the feature competitions hail from Japan — more than any other nation and far from a rare occurrence. The festival’s most anticipated event...

I often receive puzzled looks when I tell folks that Unshaven Comics makes the trek from the southern burbs of Chicago to the New York Comic Con by car. I reassure them that if we could afford to ship an entire booth setup and merchandise to the Javits, convince ComicMix’s own Glenn Hauman to pick us up from La Guardia (a hell I wouldn’t wish on anyone, let alone our most gracious host), and then be beholden to said Haumans for most of our transportation needs, we would. But, rest assured, we’ve made the trip enough for me to admit I actually look forward to the nearly 14-hour jaunt across Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Hollywood loves to adapt old films and TV shows into new, rebooted versions. Occasionally, they look to Japanese anime for inspiration, such as with Astro Boy, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer, and the upcoming Ghost in the Shell. There are many anime projects that would make for excellent movies, if they were done right. Here are seven works of anime that have the potential to be big hits as live-action Hollywood films.
The popular anime Ghost in the Shell is currently being made into a live action film. The inspiration for Pacific Rim came from the trend of anime giant robot shows. Firefly/Serenity was inspired by the anime Cowboy Bebop. Anime (or anime inspired) adaptations have been hit-and-miss (more miss than hit, actually) but we think the following films could make great film franchises, if Hollywood got them right.
Akira: This ground-breaking film is responsible for the American anime craze of the 1990s.

From Marine Boy and Thundercats to Cities Of Gold and Akira, we look at the TV shows and movies that introduced the UK to Japanese anime
One evening in 1994, the BBC screened a documentary simply called Manga. Presented by Jonathan Ross, it showcased the rising popularity of Japanese animation, largely focusing on the output of Manga Entertainment, whose dubbed VHS releases had made a huge impact on anime fans and caused a certain amount of consternation among the mainstream press.
For British viewers, the anime boom took a long time to arrive. In America, Japanese shows like Kimba The White Lion, Gigantor and Astro Boy were a common sight on television in the 1960s, yet it took until the late 70s and 80s, and a string of European-Japanese co-productions, before anime finally began to find a hold on UK television.

Big budget blockbuster versions of old school anime and manga favourites are still very much in vogue in Japan, with the likes of “Space Captain Harlock”, “Space Battleship Yamato” and others having hit the screen in recent years. “Gatchaman”, better known to western viewers as “Battle of the Planets” (or possibly “G-Force: Guardians of Space”) is the latest to make the leap, director Sato Toya (“Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler”) offering up a new, special effects heavy take on Yoshida Tatsuo’s early 1970s series “Science Ninja Team Gatchaman”, with Ayano Go as Joe (“Rurouni Kenshin”), Matsuzaka Tori as Ken (“Love for Beginners”), Goriki Ayame as Jun (“Kiyosu Conference”), Hamada Tatsuomi as Jinpei (“Umizaru Brave Hearts”) and Suzuki Ryohei as Ryu (“Forbidden Superhero”). The film is set in 2050, with the world having been invaded by the Galactors, an evil race of humanoid beings led by the evil Berg Katse, who manage to conquer half the planet,...

Created by Tatsuo Yoshida and originally released in 1972 under the name Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman, the series later debuted with an English dub as Battle of the Planets (and unofficially called G-Force). It was followed by an animated film and two short-running sequel series in 1978 and 1979. The series centered around five young superhero ninja in the employ of Dr. Kōzaburō Nambu of the fictitious International Science Organization to oppose an international terrorist organization of technologically advanced villains, known as Galactor, from trying to take control of the Earth's natural resources. The Gatchaman team employed a unique style of highly violent and effective martial arts, developed by Dr. Nambu, that drew from their physical abilities to enable them to perform...

As a kid growing up in the 1980′s, you’d have been hard pressed not to have been influenced, even if unknowingly, by Japanese anime and culture. From Transformers to Robotech to Voltron and everything in between such as Battle of the Planets and the less popular Tranzor Z , the Japanese were responsible for creating some of the coolest giant robots and spaceships ever to appear on movie and television screens. One such ship was the Space Battleship Yamato, known in the Us as Star Blazers.

There will be daily video recorded and published on the site in addition to interviews and reviews. Today, the final wave and closing night film was announced. Every year, Fantastic Fest tends to have side events/parties that tie into the Opening & Closing Night films and given the content, I can’t wait to see what they come up with. The closing night film is the North American Premiere of Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem.
Without further ado, here is the official press release with a full list of films that were added.
