If there was any doubt that the future is here (for better or worse), just remember that you are now living in George Jetson’s lifetime. Animation fans are celebrating an important milestone this weekend, as several savvy Twitter users noticed that the Spacely Sprockets employee, husband to Jane, and father of June and Elroy, is said to be born on July 31, 2022. That still gives us 40 years before the events of the show begin, so there’s no need to feel bad about not having flying cars yet.
“The Jetsons” famously followed a middle class family living in Orbit City in a chrome-tinged future where robots allow humans to live leisurely. It was conceived as a companion show to “The Flintstones,” which famously reimagined 1950s sitcom tropes from shows like “The Honeymooners” in a Stone Age world full of cavemen and dinosaurs. “The Jetsons” took the inverse approach, making a...

This year is a big one for science fiction mythology. If there is any truth in advertising, The Jetsons will be celebrating a blessed pre-event this year. According to the math, 2022 is the year George Jetson will be born. When it premiered on ABC on Sept. 23, 1962, The Jetsons’ promos explained the series, which had plotlines as old as The Flintstones, was set exactly 100 years in the future.
Everything there is to know about George, voiced by George O’Hanlon, seems to be laid out in the theme song. He is the husband of Jane Jetson (Penny Singleton), they have a teenage daughter Judy (Janet Waldo), who goes to go to Orbit High School, and a son named Elroy (Daws Butler), who orbits middle school. George works at Spacely’s Space Sprocket. Modern science has not yet determined what a space sprocket actually does, but we can assume it will be...

Animation producers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera had hit paydirt with their 1960 primetime cartoon The Flintstones, which was essentially The Honeymooners in prehistoric times, with Fred Flintstone in place of Ralph Kramden and Barney Rubble subbing for Ed Norton. Seeking a follow-up, the duo decided that they would look to the future in the form of the then-distant 21st century, which resulted in The Jetsons, a cartoon about America's first space-age family. The focus is on George Jetson, an employee of Spacely Space Sprockets, and much of the comedy came from interactions with his wife, Jane; daughter Judy, his boy Elroy, and their mutt with a speech impediment (think Scooby-Doo), Astro. The other aspect of the show was its look at the evolution of technology, presenting a world where virtually everything is automated, flying cars fill the skies, we talk on large screen video phones, and have robot servants — in many (though not all) ways,...

Martha Stewart: Actress / Singer in Fox movies apparently not dead despite two-year-old reports to the contrary (Photo: Martha Stewart and Perry Como in 'Doll Face') According to various online reports, including Variety's, actress and singer Martha Stewart, a pretty blonde featured in supporting roles in a handful of 20th Century Fox movies of the '40s, died at age 89 of "natural causes" in Northeast Harbor, Maine, on February 25, 2012. Needless to say, that was not the same Martha Stewart hawking "delicious foods" and whatever else on American television. But quite possibly, the Martha Stewart who died in February 2012 -- if any -- was not the Martha Stewart of old Fox movies either. And that's why I'm republishing this (former) obit, originally posted more than two and a half years ago: March 11, 2012. Earlier today, a commenter wrote to Alt Film Guide, claiming that the Martha Stewart featured in Doll Face, I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now,...

They can be clanking or lithe, as big as a planet or as small as a puppy. Here’s our list of cinema's 50 finest robots and AI computers…
Who doesn’t love robots? Our metal friends have long been a source of inspiration, wonder and fear for filmmakers and audiences. A way to examine our own humanity, and view emotions – or lack of them – from a new perspective, artificial intelligence has been in films for almost as long as we’ve been making them. We seem drawn to them, more often that not casting them as our creations gone rogue and seeking to rise up against us, but sometimes as tragic figures wanting to be more like us. Either way, they’re fascinating, and pretty damn cool.

Here's a look back at past weekends comparable to June 2-4, 2010: 5 Years Ago - 2005 War of the Worlds stormed the box office with a $64.9 million first weekend at 3,908 locations, bringing its five-day opening to $100.6 million. At the time, it posted the second highest-grossing Independence Day weekend ever, though it didn't have the attendance impact of the holiday's previous alien invasion movie, Independence Day in 1996. The releases of the previous weekend and new entry Rebound were so weak that Batman Begins and Mr. & Mrs. Smith placed a distant second and third, respectively. * Weekend Report: 'War of the Worlds' Booms on Independence Day Weekend 10 Years Ago - 2000 The Perfect Storm blew into the top spot with $41.3 million at 3,407 locations, blasting past The Patriot, which was timed for the holiday and made $22.4 million at 3,061 locations ($31.7 million since its Wednesday start). Patriot might have paled compared to the harrowing disaster movie,...

If you're planning on doing some DVD shopping this week, you're essentially looking at some mediocre theatrical releases from January and a handful of genre flicks to choose from. In addition to Bride Wars and Hotel for Dogs, there is the A Tale of Two Sisters remake The Uninvited, the controversial Martyrs, direct-to-dvd Mma action flick Never Surrender, plus the festival favourite Jcvd starring (you guessed it!) Jean Claude Van-Damme. Also hitting stores today is the animated feature Jetsons: The Movie, the first two volumes of the '90s X-Men animated series, and on Blu-ray, Season 1 of Star Trek: The Original Series. See anything worth picking up? Jcvd [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Bride Wars [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) The Uninvited [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Hotel for Dogs [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) What Doesn't Kill You [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) Martyrs [11] Nothing But The Truth [12] Never Surrender [13] Sex & Lies in Sin City [14] While She Was Out [15] What's Up Scarlet? [16] Legally Blondes...
