Several characters in the series have been named after and inspired by famous people and characters: Elvis Criddlington is named after and inspired by famous singer Elvis Presley, Station Officer Steele was inspired by Dad's Army character Captain Mainwaring, Dillys Price was inspired by Coronation Street character Hilda Ogden, while Norman Price's possible inspiration comes from the cartoon character Dennis the Menace.
The Independent Film Association of Schools in Ireland started a petition for the show to be translated into Irish for the twenty viewers in the county of Galway
Norman has caused more emergencies than any other character in the series.
The show's Welsh title is "Sam Tân", which just literally means "Sam Fire". The theme tune (excluding the lyrics) and characters are the same.
There are a total of 9 vehicles used by the Pontypandy Fire Service; Jupiter (the main fire engine), Venus (the rescue tender), Phoenix (a crane), Mercury (a quad bike), Hydrus (a six-wheeled all terrain vehicle), Neptune (a coastguard lifeboat), Juno (a jetski), Titan (a fireboat) and Bessie (a refurbished railway fire engine). Other vehicles include Trevor Evans' bus, Mike Flood's maintenance van, Nurse Helen Flood's ambulance car, Lizzie Sparkes' animal rescue 4x4, Gareth Griffiths' steam train (the Pontypandy Flyer), Wallaby 1, Wallaby 2 and the Mountain Rescue 4x4 (the latter three of which are all used by Tom Thomas).
