It's the season of the villains in the world of comic book adaptations. Fresh off the release of Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along comes The Penguin, bringing one of DC's greatest antagonists to the small screen. And let's not forget that DC Studios will also be releasing Joker: Folie à Deux in theaters this year.
But right now, Gotham City belongs to The Penguin - or at least it will when he builds his criminal empire. The upcoming HBO and Max series is a spinoff of Matt Reeves' The Batman, the critically-acclaimed 2022 movie which starred Robert Pattinson as The Dark Knight. Colin Farrell reprises his role as Oswald Cobblepot - or Oz Cobb as this universe calls him - as the character attempts to make a name for himself in a city without a crime boss; a city that is vulnerable after The Riddler's attack.

Robert De Niro apparently didn’t come to the “Joker” set completely off-book.
While talking with Jason Ritter on Maron’s podcast “Wtf,” the comedian and host recounted his days on set with Robert De Niro filming “Joker.” Maron said that the legendary actor kept forgetting his lines, which helped make him seem more like a real person.
“I did that one scene with De Niro in ‘Joker’ and I was literally watching him, because I was on the set all week, and he’s playing that talk show host,” Maron said. “He doesn’t know his lines, and they’re doing it over and over again. It was totally demystifying De Niro to me, because I’ve watched him my whole life.”
Maron added, “Obviously he’s a great actor, but they understand something – people who live their lives on-camera and have been doing it that long – because I...

The State of the Race
If there is one major Oscar race that has changed the most due to the Academy’s push to become more globally-minded, it is the Best Director race. Recent surprise nominees, from “Anatomy of a Fall” filmmaker Justine Triet last year to “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund and “Drive My Car” director Ryusuke Hamaguchi the years prior, have often been directors that appealed more to the tastes of international voters.
Fast forward to now, and that sort of Cannes crowd really is leading the conversation...

Todd Phillips' "Joker" is the most divisive film to ever gross over $1 billion worldwide. This might sound like a strange thing to say about a film that was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won two, but many of the film's detractors absolutely abhor the film. There are several reasons for this (one of them being certain critics' knee-jerk hatred of all things comic book related), but Phillips' most egregious offense might've been paying aggressive homage to Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" and "The King of Comedy." These are two of the most emotionally scarring character studies of psychically damaged loners ever put to film; they're peak Scorsese, and they are not to be touched by a filmmaker best known for his rowdy R-rated comedies about men who, in their way, are every bit as dangerous to society as Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin.
The problem with "Joker" for me is that it is,...

In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

Lady Gaga has explained her decision to ignore baseless rumors from early in her career claiming she was actually a man instead of addressing them directly.
While appearing in an episode of Netflix’s What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates covering misinformation, Gaga reflected on the impact of doctored photos that surfaced online as purported evidence she had male genitalia.
“When I was in my early 20s there was a rumor that I was a man,” the artist told Gates (via Variety). “I went all over the world. I traveled for tours and for promoting my records and [in] almost every interview I sat in they said — there was this imagery on the internet that had been doctored — they’d say, ‘There’s rumors that you’re a man. Two more movies this holiday season will land Imax screens and that’s Disney’s Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King.

Forget 'Send In The Clowns' — how about 'Send Down The Clown'? That certainly looks to be the idea in the latest trailer for Todd Phillips all-singing, all-dancing movie with music Joker: Folie À Deux, which sees Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck taking to the stand as he goes on trial for the televised killing of Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) in Joker. Joining him in the courtroom — and Arkham Asylum (and in a slew of fantastical musical_esque_ sequences) — is Harley "Lee" Quinn, with whom yer man Joker strikes up a potentially romantic, definitely dangerous bond. Check out the trailer, in which Phoenix and Gaga use music and song to express that which words alone are not enough to say, below:
"They're saying you're a bad influence on me," says Gaga at the start of the new trailer, which juxtaposes more of Phillips' 70s inspired, gritty take on Gotham as...

Lady Gaga is opening up about why she never spoke out against rumors earlier in her career claiming she was actually a man.
The singer-actress famously shut down a question about the rumor during a 2011 interview with CNN, saying, “Why the hell am I going to waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis? When you thought you’d seen the final trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips returns with another explosive preview to whet the whistles of eager fans. Today’s Joker: Folie à Deux trailer showers the film with praise from glowing reviews across the entertainment spectrum, selecting the best of the best quotes from reviews for the movie’s Venice Film Festival screening.
As you may recall, many reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux skewed toward the negative, but WB managed to sift through the weeds to find a bed of flowers thrown at Todd Phillips’ feet for the new trailer. The mixture of reactions to the film reinforces the need to see it for yourself (if you’re interested) and form your own opinion. "I am free!" Well it's almost time. A few weeks left. Even though they already debuted a "final trailer" weeks ago, WB has unveiled yet another new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux. This one features one of the songs performed in the movie musical called "That's Life" with a montage of footage. The movie just premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (to mostly mixed reviews). This all-out Gotham City sequel is being described as a "musical psychological thriller" set in Gotham City, with song & dance worked right into the storyline. Lady Gaga co-stars as Joker's new partner Harley Quinn. Joaquin Phoenix returns as Arthur, with a cast including Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, & Harry Lawtey. I wasn't the biggest fan of Joker 2 (here's my full review) this time – I think it's well made but doesn't hit as hard as the first movie.

"You can do anything you want. You're Joker."
We're now just a few weeks away from the theatrical debut of Joker: Folie À Deux, and Warner Bros. has released a final trailer featuring quite a bit of new footage along with some of the praise that's been heaped upon the film since the review embargo lifted last week.
The first Joker was widely praised by fans and recognized by several major awards bodies (including the Oscars), so it can be easy to forget that critics were far from won over upon its release. While some hailed the disturbing crime drama as a masterpiece, others felt that it was little more than a depressing slog that "ripped off" Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver and King of Comedy.
Reactions to the sequel have been similarly mixed (though its Rotten Tomatoes score has since risen to 63%), so it'll be very interesting to see...

We are only a couple of weeks away from the release of Todd Phillips’ highly anticipated sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux.” And honestly, it doesn’t feel like there’s this huge groundswell of support like what happened with the first film. Sure, box office projections are pretty high, but the sequel has giant shoes to fill if it wants to match the $1 billion gross of the original.

Long-range tracking for Joker: Folie à Deux recently pointed to a $70 million opening weekend in North America, a far cry from those early $100+ million predictions.
Now, a troubling trend has been spotted in that tracking because the $70 million is slowly starting to dip. According to Puck's Matthew Belloni, the Joker sequel's tracking "has dropped slightly from $70M last week to $68M."
What's a couple of million dollars in the grand scheme of things? Well, not much, but it points to Joker: Folie à Deux potentially coming in well below estimates and perhaps even underperforming.
Reviews out of Venice were mostly positive but not glowing and a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score - which, like it or not, does sway many moviegoers - isn't likely to drive up interest in a movie that's already a tough sell. Why? Well, in place of the hard-hitting character drama we got in 2019 is a jukebox musical.

Exclusive: Filming has wrapped in Wales on Mr. Burton, the upcoming biopic about the man who inspired screen legend Richard Burton.
Independent Entertainment has sold UK and Ireland rights to Icon Film Distribution, which will release the film theatrically in 2025 to coincide with the centenary of Burton’s birth.
As we first revealed, the film will tell the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins. The latter dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline. Mr. Burton recognized the raw talent in his pupil, and made it his mission to fight for him, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father. Be it Messi vs. Ronaldo or PlayStation vs. Xbox, there has always been a point of debate on who or which is the best in its category. The same thing goes for Marvel and DC as well. Both cinematic universes have some of the greatest superheroes, villains, movies, and whatnot!

Avengers might have left Justice League quite some distance behind it. But when it comes to solo movies, DC has always been way ahead. The Batman trilogy is a prime example. Joker too, which has got an Oscar as well. Now DC might have another chance with this popular antihero to surpass Marvel in another sector as well.

While Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is one of Warner Bros’ biggest theatrical success stories of the year, at over $264 million in worldwide grosses and counting, there was a period in the decade-plus the studio was mulling the sequel in which execs advocated for the film to go straight to streaming on Max.
However, “that was never going to work for Tim,” says Pamela Abdy, Co-Chair of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, in a new interview with the New York Times. “You’re talking about a visionary artist whose films demand to be seen on a big screen.”
But while Abdy and Co-Chair Mike De Luca, who assumed the top film posts at Warner Bros in 2022, were highly enthusiastic about getting the Beetlejuice sequel made, they knew its budget would have to come down, for a theatrical release to make sense. While Burton and team had projected a $147M budget,...

Now this is spooky: Tim Burton’s long-awaited “Beetlejuice” sequel almost received a streaming-only release. But thanks to Burton’s budget cuts and negotiations with Warner Bros. Discovery executives, plans for a potential Max-exclusive were scrapped in favor of a full theatrical debut.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which stars Michael Keaton reprising his role of the titular ghoul after the 1988 original, is a box-office hit — at least in the U.S. — following its world premiere at Venice 2024. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has grossed more than $264 million at the worldwide box office since its September 6 release. A weak international performance is presently sullying the results a bit.
But Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy took a victory lap in the New York Times all the same. The Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chairs told the publication that Burton refused a to let “Beetlejuice 2” go streaming-only.
“That was never going to work for Tim,” Abdy said said.

Last month, actor Joaquin Phoenix made waves after he dropped out of a new film from Carol director Todd Haynes mere days before the film was supposed to start. The movie is reportedly a gay romance, and there was speculation that Phoenix may have gotten cold feet about the subject matter. But it's starting to sound like he just has an issue with dropping out of movies at the last minute in general.
This comes from Phoenix's fellow actor James McAvoy, who's currently out there promoting his new movie Speak No Evil. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McAvoy said that Phoenix also dropped out of M. Night Shyamalan's 2016 horror movie Split right before shooting was set to begin: “I think he ditched it like two weeks before they started shooting. It was really last minute.”

James McAvoy claims that his pivotal role in M Night Shyamalan’s Split was originally to be played by Joaquin Phoenix, but he allegedly quit two weeks before filming began.
In what’s beginning to look like a pattern, it’s been alleged that Joaquin Phoenix departed the production of M Night Shyamalan’s 2016 thriller Split – just two weeks before filming began. The story comes straight from James McAvoy, who ultimately played Kevin, the kidnapper with multiple personalities, in the finished film – and later reprised the role in 2019’s Glass.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Deadline), McAvoy said, “I think he [Phoenix] ditched it two weeks before they started shooting.”
The actor added that the short window between him replacing Phoenix and the start of the shoot left him with little time to perfect a complex character that essentially required 15 different performances in one movie.

The weekend box office numbers have begun rolling in, and it looks like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice held up much better than anyone (except us) expected in week two. According to Deadline, the popular sequel grossed $51.6 million this weekend, which is the second-best sophomore weekend for a fall movie since It back in 2017. Notably, the film only dipped 54% this weekend, a strong hold for a movie that opened north of $100 million.
With a $188 million domestic total, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice seems certain to end its domestic run with a $250 million-plus final gross. It is another winner for Warner Bros, who are having a good year. Wonka, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were all major worldwide hits, with only their underrated Furiosa and Horizon: Chapter 1 box office misfires for them this year. They also have Joker: Folie a Deux coming up in a few weeks, which should be another hit,...

Three new movies were no match for the Ghost With the Most as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” loomed large over domestic box office charts again.
Tim Burton’s spooky sequel added a stellar $51.6 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its tally to $188 million in North America and $264 million globally. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” hasn’t resonated as strongly at the international box office, where the Warner Bros. film has earned $76.3 million to date.
In terms of newcomers, “Speak No Evil,” Universal and Blumhouse’s remake of the 2022 Danish horror film, opened in second place with $11.5 million from 3,375 venues. Provocateur comedian Matt Walsh’s satire documentary “Am I Racist?” landed in fourth place with a decent $4.75 million from 1,517 theaters. The film, released by conservative pundit Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire, landed the top debut in 2024 for a doc. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “The Killer’s Game” with Dave Bautista failed to connect, debuting at No.

We're now about three weeks away from the release of Joker: Folie À Deux, and following the recent "final" trailer, Warner Bros. has shared a new featurette spotlighting Lady Gaga as this universe's take on Harley Quinn.
This version of the fan-favourite Batman villain turned anti-hero goes by "Lee Quinzel," and while she will share some characteristics with her comic-book counterpart (bit crazy; loves that Joker), this teaser makes it very clear that Gaga is not playing the Harley Quinn, just as Joaquin Phoenix is not the Joker.
The featurette includes an interview with Gaga, as well as some new footage from the film.
During a recent interview with IGN, director Todd Phillips explained why he decided to stray away from the usual depictions of Harley for this movie.
"We respect the comics. We get the comics. In Harley's case, we watched the animated series. Of course, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn.

Joaquin Phoenix has become one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, and he is known for his intense dedication and unique approach to his craft. This level of commitment has helped him land numerous acclaimed roles, including his Oscar-winning performance in Joker. However, as much as his creative methods have brought him success, they’ve also caused him to walk away from significant opportunities.

One of these missed chances involved a project that later went on to achieve incredible success. In a twist of fate, the role Phoenix passed on ended up in the hands of another brilliant actor, James McAvoy, whose performance in the movie garnered critical acclaim and multiple awards.

Franchises are both the lifeblood and bane of Hollywood’s existence. When everything clicks, a series can keep consumers intrigued for years if not decades — James Bond, Batman, Star Wars, Mission: Impossible, Superman. But sooner or later, fatigue sets in and the complaints begin (i.e., what happened to originality?)
The 2024 summer box office was a rare exception. For the first time in recent memory, “franchise” no longer was a dirty word, says one top studio executive. Those big brands helped push year-to-date domestic grosses to more than $5.4 billion as of the weekend of Sept. 6-8, which is still down about 13 percent compared with a year earlier but better than expectations for this point in 2024.

James McAvoy appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to promote his villainous turn in the new horror movie “Speak No Evil,” but his revelation about M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” has garnered attention on social media. McAvoy said he only had about two weeks to prepare for his various roles in the thriller because he was cast at the last minute after Joaquin Phoenix reportedly dropped out a couple weeks before the production start.
When asked if it was weird to take over the role from Phoenix, McAvoy answered: “No, definitely not. I’m confident enough to think that I will do it better anyway. I’m joking. I just like saying the wrong thing.”
“Are you kidding? He’s an amazing actor,” McAvoy said. “He’d give a very different performance than the one I did but an incredible one. Sometimes coming in last minute is the best way.

M. Night Shyamalan’s filmmaking genius has produced several high-rated projects. The director, quite famous for his shocking twists and endings, created a masterpiece named Split all the way back in 2016. It featured James McAvoy, who plays a man with dissociative identity disorder. The movie broke several records and placed Shyamalan as one of Hollywood’s finest filmmakers.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Lady Gaga took a look back at her humble roots Wednesday, acknowledging a now-deleted Facebook group created by some of her classmates at New York University titled, “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous.” Screenshots of the community, which calls Gaga out by her birth name, have circulated online among fans for several years now.
Gaga confronted the existence of the group publicly by commenting on a TikTok about it. The original post juxtaposed a screenshot of the 12-member Facebook group with a list of the star’s many accolades, including an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, 13 Grammy Awards, 10 Billboard Music Awards and 18 MTV Music Video Awards.
“Some people I went to college [with] made this way back when,” Gaga wrote on the post. “This is why you can’t give up when people doubt you or put you down — gotta keep going.”

Grammy and Oscar-winning pop culture icon Lady Gaga is doing pretty well for herself. But before she was a multi-platinum, record-breaking artist and household name, she was Stefani Germanotta, an aspiring artist willing to try things no one else was doing onstage.
During her time as a student at NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts, some of Gaga’s classmates failed to see the vision, and created a snarky group to badmouth their fellow student behind her back. The group was notoriously called “Stefani Germanotta, You Will Never Be Famous,” with a header image showing a large “X” drawn through her.
If the shame of being proven so deeply wrong wasn’t enough, Gaga herself has now chimed in on the existence of the Facebook group, years after it was uncovered.
“Some people I went to college with made this way back when,” she said in a TikTok comment.

Warner Bros. has its work cut out for it before Todd Phillips’ divisive sequel Joker: Folie à Deux opens in North American theaters three weeks from now.
The movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga is tracking for a domestic opening of $70 million-plus, at least $10 million behind tracking for the first Joker, which went on to shatter records in launching to $96.2 million domestically in 2019. Prerelease tracking is hardly an exact science, and numerous movies of late have opened well ahead of predictions.
But there’s no question that Joker 2 has raised eyebrows, and earned mixed reviews, for its genre-busting storyline after making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Rarely does one see a film described as a “crime drama musical thriller” on IMDb, possibly confusing the everyday superhero fan.

Warner Bros.’ Todd Phillips sequel Joker: Folie à Deux hit tracking with a $70M+ projection.
The studio, similar to what they did with the original 2019 movie, Joker, took the pic to the Venice Film Festival for a world premiere, however, critical reviews came back at 62% fresh. By the way, before we rush to judgement, the 2019 movie came away from its Venice and TIFF premiere 62% fresh with critics at the same point in time growing to 69%.
We hear the sequel is exactly what Phillips set out to make: a movie with musical elements. The question is whether the fans of the $1.1 billion grossing global movie want to see Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn (here played by Lady Gaga) singing their character’s personal favorite hits. It does look wonderfully edgy.
Still, even at a $70M+ start, which would be $26M less than Joker‘s opening of $96.2M, that’s nothing to be ashamed of,...
