Lionsgate has seen a run of bad box office luck: “Borderlands,” “The Crow,” “1992,” and the just-opened “The Killer’s Game” combined have only grossed $30 million among four new films opened in the past six weeks.
“Uglies” continues the recent string of Netflix original movie successes. From director McG, the YA novel adaptation about a society where standardized personal attractiveness is compulsory was an immediate #1 this weekend on the streamer’s top movie list.
In its Sunday spin on first weekend results, Lionsgate often says that, despite weak numbers, the company is in a position to end up making money — and due to financial positioning and post-theatrical platforms.
With “The Crow” debuting on PVOD last Friday, they may have an argument.
Despite only being out for three days, the reboot of the 1994 Brandon Lee-launched film series is #1 on Fandango’s top 10 VOD chart (which covers a full week). The at-home viewing platform calculates by revenue,...

Franchises are both the lifeblood and bane of Hollywood’s existence. When everything clicks, a series can keep consumers intrigued for years if not decades — James Bond, Batman, Star Wars, Mission: Impossible, Superman. But sooner or later, fatigue sets in and the complaints begin (i.e., what happened to originality?)
The 2024 summer box office was a rare exception. For the first time in recent memory, “franchise” no longer was a dirty word, says one top studio executive. Those big brands helped push year-to-date domestic grosses to more than $5.4 billion as of the weekend of Sept. 6-8, which is still down about 13 percent compared with a year earlier but better than expectations for this point in 2024.
The reversal in fortune began after a rough May that saw The Fall Guy, a potential franchise newbie, spin out at the box office, followed by the blowout of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ($172 million...

2024 got off to a very rough start at the box office, particularly in regards to mainstream horror releases. In 2022 and 2023, horror proved to be one of the most bankable genres that theaters could depend on in the aftermath of the pandemic. Unfortunately, the likes of "Night Swim," "Imaginary," "Abigail," and others disappointed earlier this year. Things have rebounded and we now have hits such as "A Quiet Place: Day One" and the unexpected $100 million hit that was "Longlegs." One movie stands tall above the rest though, and that movie is "Alien: Romulus." Even more crazy to consider? That movie nearly went straight to Hulu.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, director Fede Alvarez's "Romulus" added another $3.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took the lion's share of the attention with a massive $111 million opening, but the latest "Alien" movie is still holding its own. To that end,...

Halloween Horror Nights 2024 advertises itself as home to a ground-breaking haunted house incorporating American Sign Language (Asl) “for the very first time.”
That’s a tough claim to prove considering the scope of the country’s Halloween scene and the countless underground attractions hidden therein. But at least at Universal Studios’ mega-popular annual event, the new “A Quiet Place” experience is indeed making history.
“What I was so impressed by when I first saw John Krasinski’s film was the level of detail that he went to to tell an authentic story, particularly with the character of Regan,” creative director John Murdy told IndieWire during the event’s opening night on September 5 at Universal Studios Hollywood. (The attraction is available at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando as well.)

Refresh for latest…: Warner Bros unleashed Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice this weekend, as the ghost with the most tallied up a $145.4M global start. That’s in line with where we saw it ahead of the weekend, and includes $110M from domestic as well as $35.4M from 69 international box office markets. The launch gives the sequel bragging rights to being front of the line this frame domestically, internationally and globally.
The Michael Keaton-starrer racked up No. 1 starts in 40 overseas markets while such key plays as France, Germany and Japan are still on deck to release in the coming weeks and months.
Internationally in like-for-likes and using today’s exchange rates, the film is tracking 28% ahead of Alice Through the Looking Glass and 74% over Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” jumped in the line and earned $41.5 million from 4,575 locations across Friday and preview screenings. That’s the second-biggest opening day ever for a September release, only falling behind 2017’s “It” ($50.425 million). It’s also the biggest ever for director Tim Burton’s career, landing ahead of the $40.8 million opening day of “Alice in Wonderland” back in 2010.
That’s a triumphant kick-off for the decades-brewing legacy sequel, produced at a budget of $100 million. And for Warner Bros., it’s a much-needed, unmitigated hit. After a summer that saw the studio put out abject nonstarters like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1”, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is now potentially looking at a $97 million-plus opening weekend in North America. In just three days of release, that would clear more than half of Warner Bros.’ total domestic haul across all of its summer releases. The film also...

Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn is having a huge moment between his breakout in the Netflix role, his recent starring turn in A Quiet Place: Day One, and his upcoming appearance as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the MCU’s Fantastic Four film. It’s no wonder that Hoard, an indie movie in which he has a supporting role, is getting a much larger platform than it otherwise would, considering his popularity. As for the movie itself, it’s a conventional story told from an unconventional perspective, resulting in an incredibly uneven entry into the genre.
Hoard Review
Hoard follows a young woman through two time periods — her youth, when her mom was a hoarder, and her teenage years in foster care, where she is forced to unbury traumas that have long been repressed. Carmoon’s coming-of-age story clearly tries to use this very specific experience to channel more universal emotions.

September should accomplish something that summer 2024 did not, although it made a valiant effort. Box office should improve against last September by at least $200 million, with the potential for a $700 million total. If that’s the case, summer will deserve some credit for providing a strong baseline.
On the surface, it’s not a good look. Summer 2024 was 10 percent lower than last year — a period that, with unadjusted ticket prices, was the lowest-grossing pre-Covid summer in this century. May and June were down 15 percent from 2023, but July and August fell only five percent thanks to “Deadpool vs. Wolverine” (Disney), this summer’s big Marvel release.
Yes, 2024 was the first summer after the strikes, but 2023 and 2024 were about the same in major wide releases — a little more than 30. This year saw two $600 million+ releases (Disney with “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool”), compared to one last year (“Barbie”). Both 2024 hits ultimately...

You may not have noticed, but Beetlejuice is having a moment. With the upcoming sequel "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" all but guaranteed to make a ton of money this weekend at the box office, and Halloween on the way, the ghost with the most is going to be on everyone's minds for the next few months (even if we shouldn't say his name three times). You can see Beetlejuice everywhere: Movies, faux-episodes of "Hot Ones," through merchandise, and ... well, only somewhat at theme parks. You see, while Beetlejuice as a character is owned by the larger Warner Bros. Discovery entity, he does make appearances at the Universal Studios theme parks in California and Orlando. But these days, Universal execs might just be smacking their foreheads, because there was once a time not long ago when Universal Studios Orlando featured Beetlejuice as the ghost host with the most in a stage show that it eventually closed,...

The numbers are in — domestic revenue for the 2024 summer box office hit an estimated $3.67 billion, down 10.3 percent over 2023, according to final numbers issued Tuesday by Comscore. As counterintuitive as it may seem, Hollywood studio executives and theater owners aren’t panicking.
They were experiencing far different emotions at the end of May, the official start of the summer box office. Revenue for the month was down a terrifying 29 percent from the prior year, prompting renewed concern that the theatrical experience might not survive the lasting impact of the pandemic, Hollywood’s historic labor strikes and competition from streaming.
It was because of the strikes that Marvel Studios and Disney weren’t able to open Deadpool & Wolverine at the beginning of May — the threequel was delayed to late July — marking the first time in years that a Marvel superhero pic hasn’t kicked off summer. This year, that job went...

The latest installment in the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, has drawn in more money at the global box office than any other horror film released this year. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the sci-fi thriller earned $285.3 million worldwide in just three weeks in theaters. This success surpassed the previous highest-grossing horror film of 2024, A Quiet Place: Day One, which made $261.5 million globally.
Alien: Romulus continues to attract audiences. During the recent Labor Day weekend, it came in second place at the box office with an additional $11 million. Domestically, ticket sales have reached $90.6 million so far. International markets contributed $194.7 million to its total worldwide earnings. One key market was China, where the movie grossed $93.1 million.
Notably, Alien: Romulus achieved this financial success on a relatively small $80 million budget. Industry experts often consider much higher budgets standard for major franchise films. In addition to box office records, reviews have also been favorable.

Now in its third full week of release, Alien: Romulus continues hanging around the top spot on the box office charts, second only to Deadpool & Wolverine this past weekend. In the wake of a $42 million opening weekend, the Alien franchise’s return to the big screen has now scared up $90.6 million here in the United States, with the worldwide total passing $200 million.
Alien: Romulus is currently on the road to $300 million, in fact, with the Fede Alvarez-directed horror sequel’s worldwide total currently sitting at an impressive $285,312,631.
That makes Alien: Romulus the highest grossing horror movie of the year so far, officially passing the $261.5 million worldwide total of franchise prequel A Quiet Place: Day One.

“Twisters” (Universal) wasn’t the biggest film of the summer. But it is becoming the comeback kid among the group, both theatrically and at home.
The tornado-focused special effects disaster film just had a very rare weekend in theaters. In its seventh weekend, losing 200 screens, its gross increased 17 percent. That comes in its third week at home on PVOD. And right at the same time, “Twisters” returned to #1 at iTunes, edging out the second weekend of “Inside Out 2” (Disney), 2024’s biggest hit.
The Pixar film retains its top spot at Fandango, with the advantage that its $24.99 rental cost gives it with that site listing by revenue earned, not transactions like iTunes does. In any event, the split decision this week continues a now multi-month trend of no film placing #1 at both for two consecutive weeks.

The summer always gets colder by the end. Even in its sixth weekend, Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” is landing the top slot on domestic charts once again as theaters take in an assortment of low-performing new releases, including Dennis Quaid’s presidential biopic “Reagan” and the Blumhouse horror feature “Afraid.”
The Marvel Studios production earned another $3.6 million on Friday, down about 26% from its daily total a week ago. Apart from a one-weekend ceding of No. 1 to the opening frame of “Alien: Romulus,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been dominating for over a month now. Its domestic haul should reach $600 million within the next few days — a milestone that only 15 other releases have ever notched.

Our top pick this week is five-time Academy Award nominee Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy “Kinds of Kindness,” which is now streaming on Hulu. It’s Lanthimos’ third collaboration with Emma Stone, after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things.” It’s unlikely to make as strong a showing at the Academy Awards as those two, but that’s pretty much by design, as the film’s anthology structure and darkly absurdist tone make it not the kind of thing that wins Oscars. Jesse Plemons did win Best Actor at Cannes, though, so he could be a longshot contender in that category, especially at the Golden Globes.
The film consists of three loosely connected stories about people experiencing various forms of severe distress. In addition to Stone and Plemons, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamadou Athie.

Similar to how people went on vacation with revenge as Covid simmered down, so did they return to cinemas this summer.
Even though this season’s domestic box office take of $3.6 billion, per Comscore, is roughly a half-billion lighter than last summer’s $4.09 billion, chalk that up largely to a Marvel movie missing from the traditional early May summer kickoff slot due to the hangover from the Hollywood strikes (Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t arrive until late July). Last summer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 delivered $359 million stateside upon its May 5 launch — enough said.
The town freaked out because we were going through a dry period, fearing that moviegoing was hearing the death gong. But theatrical showed a nonstop resilience once Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die lit the spark in early June with a $56.5M debut, commencing a flood of event films.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ is a spin-off of ‘A Quiet Place’, a 2018 thriller directed by John Krasinski, who also stars in the film alongside his wife, Emily Blunt. The spin-off is a prequel to the first film, following the arrival of aliens on Earth and the ruin of society as a result of the invasion. Before the frightening events experienced by Evelyn and Lee (John Krasinski and Emily Blunt) in the previous films, the world was not dominated by aliens. Sam (Lupita Nyong'o) was among the humans accustomed to the noises of a metropolis like New York City, until the moment she witnesses the arrival of the creatures on planet Earth and the resulting massacre before her eyes. Now, she, Eric (Joseph Quinn), Henri (Djimon Hounsou) and Reuben (Alex Wolff), along with her cat and other survivors, will need to learn to survive with these monster-aliens that orient themselves...

“Inside Out 2” (Disney), the biggest domestic movie since “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, finally arrived at home. Released in theaters June 10, it still ranked #10 at the box office last weekend — which is probably why it could debut with a $24.99 three-day rental and take first place at both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (ranking by revenue).
This week Netflix had three of its own original films among the top four, led by “The Union” starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. The secret agent comedy-thriller is #1 for the second week, uncommon among Netflix Originals.
VOD charts also saw Neon’s low-budget sleeper success “Longlegs” place third at both sites. This came after six weeks of strong theatrical success, with $73 million so far.
Unusually, iTunes and Fandango shared the same top four films. “Twisters” (Universal), last week’s #1, is second at both, while “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) is fourth.

Updated: Another busy weekend at the international box office, with strong holds across the board, and a major new milestone for Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Already the highest grossing animated film of all time, globally and overseas, the sequel has become the first animated movie ever to cross the $1B international box office threshold, now nearing $1.003B. Overall, it is one of only 12 films ever to surpass that milestone. More on that phenom below.
Leading all play overseas was 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Alien: Romulus which added $41.6M overseas in the sophomore session (-35%), and raised its offshore cume to $152.8M. Globally, the total is now $225.4M through Sunday.
Much as it did last frame, China continues to overperform on the Fede Alvarez-directed installment, sticking No. 1 and now at a strong $73.3M. It is the second-biggest Hollywood movie in China this year, behind Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Every good arena spectacle needs its villain. Gladiator had Joaquin Phoenix’s weaselly Commodus. BBC favourite gameshow Gladiators had Wolf. Now, Ridley Scott’s next Roman epic, Gladiator II, is doubling the hissable-baddie quotient: make way for mad Emperors Geta and Caracalla, twins with insatiable egos who delight in the brutal bloodshed of the Colosseum’s gladiatorial combat. Together – played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger – they’re going to make life particularly difficult for Paul Mescal’s incoming fighter Lucius.
“For obvious reasons, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was something that was in our minds,” Quinn tells Empire, speaking on behalf of Hechinger too. “It was something we had a reverence for, but we didn’t want to.... soil with some kind of poor rendition.” Instead, they drew from other performances of delectable, unapologetic villainy – ones you can’t help but get swept up in, even when rooting for the hero.

For the sixth straight Monday, a new and different film is #1 on VOD at both iTunes and Fandango. “Twisters” (Universal), which grossed almost $10 million in theaters last weekend, is the latest summer hit to reach home viewing.
By design or accident, studios have spaced out their releases so every week brings a new top film. Since the VOD debut of “Civil War” back in late May-early June, no film has enjoyed more than a week as #1 on VOD.
As always, the timing for PVOD debuts don’t align with theatrical runs; “Twisters” and “Despicable Me 2” were released later than “Inside Out 2.” That’s no surprise — Universal is usually the quickest to go to PVOD; Disney tested the waters with streaming exclusives and same-day PVOD but now maintains the longest windows. “Inside Out 2” will hit PVOD after its 10th weekend, while it’s still in the theatrical top...

If you missed A Quiet Place: Day One in cinemas, worry not. The prequel is coming to digital, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Uhd very soon.
Prequels seem to be all the rage in 2024 and they’ve been pretty excellent too. The First Omen scared our socks off, while Furiosa took us on a wild ride across a brutal wasteland. A Quiet Place: Day One – perhaps a little surprisingly – might be the best out of the lot.
As the title suggests, the film tracks the events of the day the aliens landed on Earth and rendered it near silent, leading to the events of John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place films. We’ve embedded a trailer further below in case you want to watch it.
If you’re keen to watch the film from the comfort of your own home, that’s possible as early as next week. You can buy...

The Alien franchise is back on the big screen for the first time in seven years with director Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, which is notably the very first Alien movie to be released under the Disney umbrella. Most fans and critics agree that Alvarez has done another horror franchise proud with Romulus, which is currently 82% Fresh over on Rotten Tomatoes.
But how did the film fare at the box office in its opening weekend? Here in the United States, Alien: Romulus debuted in the #1 spot with $41.5 million, giving the film the second highest U.S. opening weekend for a horror movie this year behind A Quiet Place: Day One.
Worldwide, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s original horror classic Alien opened with $108.2 million.
After just a few days, Alien: Romulus is already the second highest grossing horror movie of 2024, A Quiet Place: Day One currently sitting in the top spot with $261 million worldwide.

“Alien: Romulus” scared up $108.2 million in its global box office debut, including $66.7 million from 49 international territories.
Disney, the studio behind the newest chapter in the long-running sci-fi horror saga, reported that overseas ticket sales are pacing ahead of “A Quiet Place: Day One” by 47% and fellow “Alien” installment “Prometheus” by 17% in like-for-like markets at current exchange rates. That trajectory is promising because Paramount’s horror prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One” has grossed $122 million internationally while “Prometheus” ended its international run with $276 million.
At the domestic box office, “Alien: Romulus” scored $41.5 million in its opening weekend, marking the second-highest start of the otherworldly series behind “Prometheus” ($51 million). Outside of the U.S. and Canada, the film enjoyed the best liftoff in China with $25.7 million — the second-biggest debut of the year for a Hollywood film in the country. Disney/20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus” is keeping the August box office strong with a $41.5 million opening weekend from 3,885 theaters, topping the $36.1 million opening of its 2017 Fox-distributed predecessor, “Alien: Covenant.”
That film, directed by series creator Ridley Scott, received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and longtime fans, but Fede Álvarez’s latest installment has earned a strong reception with a B+ on CinemaScore to go with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 81% from critics and 87% audience.
“Alien: Romulus” is also seeing strong performance overseas with $66.7 million grossed internationally, led by a stronger-than-expected $25.7 million from China with No. 1 openings in Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Korea. The summer movie season is now all but over, the tea leaves are in, and everyone in the industry is working hard to read them. Sizing up the future of movies, should we be hopeful? Fearful? Somewhere in between?
To recap the signs: There were many big hits this summer, and that’s reason to celebrate. News flash: People still like to go to the movies!
But…the total box-office receipts lagged behind those of 2023, so there’s reason to be wary. But…the impact of the strike still registered this summer in a profound way, since there wasn’t enough product to satisfy demand. That’s good news. It means that the demand is there, and that the situation can be rectified in 2025.
And yet, if you stand back and look at the great big pie chart of moviegoing, there is still a major piece missing.
Back in the ’90s,...

Directed by Osgood Perkins, Neon’s horror hit Longlegs has proven to have long legs at the box office these last several weeks, and the film just hit another massive milestone.
First reported by Variety today, Longlegs just passed $100 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest grossing indie movie – horror or otherwise – of 2024 so far!
Variety notes, “With a gross of $72 million in the U.S. and Canada and a total $100 million at the global box office, it’s also the top-grossing R-rated horror film of 2024.”
The only other horror movie to pass $100 million at the worldwide box office this year is A Quiet Place: Day One, which is currently sitting at a whopping $260 million worldwide.
Perkins’ Longlegs is also officially the highest grossing indie horror movie of the past ten years at the United States box office, a milestone it actually hit a few weeks back.

“Alien: Romulus,” the latest chapter in a sci-fi and horror saga that taught audiences that “in space, no one can hear you scream,” is making some noise at the box office. The film earned a solid $6.5 million in Thursday previews and is expected to earn $28 million to $38 million in its first weekend of release. However, some rivals and independent tracking services believe that Disney and 20th Century, the studios behind the film, are being conservative in their estimates. They expect “Alien: Romulus” to debut between $40 million or $50 million.
The Thursday numbers certainly suggest that the final results will be on the higher end of projections. They compare favorably with other recent horror-tinged releases such as “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which earned $6.7 million in previews before ending its opening weekend with $52 million in the bank, or “Nope,” which netted $6.4 million before premiering to $44 million in its first weekend.

I’ve been obsessed with apocalyptic fiction since I was a small boy, but young Luiz was always frustrated with the disproportionate amount of media that takes place months or even years after the end of the world instead of showing us the apocalypse as it happens. It was only years later that I understood the logistical difficulties in telling a believable yarn about a near-instant societal collapse, though I never stopped wishing for more stories that take place in the moments between our current world and whatever wasteland comes next.
Thankfully, there are a few brave filmmakers willing to take on the challenge of depicting the early days of humanity’s downfall. And with Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One (which is now available on Digital outlets at home) proving that audiences are still hungry for this specific kind of apocalyptic thrill, we’ve decided to come...

The #1 movie of 2024 (“Inside Out 2”), as well as #3 (“Despicable Me 4”), and #7 (“Kung Fu Panda”) are animated features. The medium’s representations continue in streaming results, with Universal releasing “Despicable Me 4” on PVOD last week. An immediate #1 at both iTunes and Fandango, it remained at #5 in theaters last weekend. It added another $8 million for a $330 million totall as usual, marketing for home viewing might have boosted its box office.
And somehow, Sony’s 2017 “The Emoji Movie” is now a hit. It grossed $217 million worldwide amidst blistering reviews; it debuted on Netflix this weekend and jumped to #1. It reinforces the notion that animation is foolproof as long as it seems fresh.
It is one of four animated titles on Netflix’s list, which includes one Netflix original, as well as “Trolls Band Together” and “The Lorax” from Universal. However, the eight-month run of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” may be over.
