Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut Blink Twice isn’t at all lacking in big ideas. But other than the horrors of class division and people’s need to feel powerful at the cost of other people’s pain, everything else is almost a bit too vague or presented too randomly to actually be impactful. Frida’s fight for freedom on abusive tech mogul Slater King’s private island is effervescent with the kind of exasperation any sensible person is to feel about a situation like that. But the journey itself, where every step taken is supposed to be poignant with the themes of women’s strength in unity and nonsensical hubris bringing doom upon the perps, is very deficient in sincerity.
Spoiler Alert
What Happens in the film?

What do you do after you've won the Oscar for Best Picture? If you're Bong Joon-ho, you get right back to work to make another banger, and choose to make it potentially weirder and more studded with Hollywood stars than anything you've made before. The first full trailer for Bong's "Parasite" follow-up "Mickey 17" is finally here, and his adaptation of Edward Ashton's trippy sci-fi novel, "Mickey7," looks great — darkly funny, unnerving, and, yes, trippy.
The first sneak peek of the new movie came over a year ago, in December 2022. At that point, "Mickey 17" was due to hit theaters by early 2024, but it was subsequently delayed by what The Hollywood Reporter previously referred to "post-strike production shifts," which no doubt gave the movie's team more time to make it as sharp and cinematic as possible in post-production.

‘Mickey 17’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson Keeps Getting Killed in Bong Joon Ho’s Follow-Up to ‘Parasite’
Robert Pattinson hates dying, especially after kicking the bucket 17-plus times for Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi-novel adaptation “Mickey 17.”
The feature, which marks writer/director Bong’s long-awaited follow-up to his Best Picture-winning “Parasite,” centers on Pattinson’s title character Mickey, who is a disposable employee called an Expendable. Mickey is sent on a human expedition sent to colonize ice world Niflheim; any mission that is considered too dangerous for humans is a task for Mickey. And of course, there are more than a few Mickey-related fatalities.
Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and “Blink Twice” breakout Naomi Ackie also star.
Bong adapted Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7” but added more deaths for the lead character. The film project was first announced in January 2022, which came before the novel’s release in February via Macmillan imprint St. Martin. The film was originally set for a March 29, 2024 release before being...

A remake of the Danish horror movie, Blumhouse and Universal released Speak No Evil in theaters over the weekend, and the news is good on both the critical and box office fronts.
Arriving in theaters with an 83% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Speak No Evil debuted with $11.3 million in 3,375 theaters at the domestic box office over the weekend.
Worldwide, the film’s current total is $20,873,595.
The reported production budget for Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil is $15 million, so the film should have no problem turning a profit at the box office in the coming weeks.
For the sake of context, Speak No Evil‘s $11.3 million domestic debut is higher than the opening weekends for several of this year’s horror movies, including Abigail, Imaginary, The First Omen, Blink Twice, The Watchers, Tarot, AfrAId, and Lisa Frankenstein. It opened to nearly the same amount as Blumhouse’s Night Swim ($11.7m), which ended with $54 million.

Adria Arjona is set to star in Onslaught, the next film from You’re Next and Godzilla X Kong director Adam Wingard, said to be a ‘gonzo action thriller’.
Having starred in two well-received thrillers over the past year – that’d be Blink Twice and Hit Man – Adria Arjona’s reportedly set to appear in another one, this time from director Adam Wingard.
Most recently, Wingard’s been best known in multiplexes for his expensive monster flicks – 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong and 2024’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. For his next film, it’s said that the filmmaker’s returning to the smaller-scale thrillers of his earlier career, most notably 2011’s You’re Next and 2014’s The Guest. As reported in May, it’s called Onslaught, and its script, co-written by Wingard and Simon Barrett, is described as a ‘gonzo action thriller’ by The Hollywood Reporter.

Adam Wingard is done with the MonsterVerse (for now), but he has found a leading lady for his next project. THR reports that Adria Arjona is in final negotiations to star in and executive produce Onslaught for A24, a project described as a “gonzo action horror thriller.“
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s said that Arjona will play “a mother who falls back on a particular set of skills in order to protect her loved ones after she runs afoul of a threat that has escaped a secret military base.” In addition to directing Onslaught, Wingard is also co-writing the script with Simon Barrett, who he worked with on You’re Next and The Guest. Production is expected to kick off in New Mexico later this year.

Adria Arjona, who appeared opposite Glen Powell in Netflix’s Hit Man, is in final negotiations to star in and executive produce Onslaught, the latest feature project from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker Adam Wingard.
A24 is behind the action thriller after winning an auction in the spring. It reteams Wingard with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two made the cult hits You’re Next and The Guest.
Wingard and Barrett are writing the project, with Wingard to be in the director’s seat when cameras roll in New Mexico later this year.
Many details for Onslaught are being kept in an underground experimental facility, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller. The scope is said to more in line with Wingard’s earlier movies, which were all original creations, before he went off and made the big-budget spectacle hits Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong.

After spending August discussing Paul Morrissey’s Udo Kier-starring Blood for Dracula (listen), Julia Ducournau’s Raw follow-up Titane (listen), and Stephen Herek’s comfort classic Critters (listen), we wrapped up the month with a look at Tim Burton‘s 1988 classic, Beetlejuice!
In the film, Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis) are perfectly content married nerds who enjoy staying at home and working on their house. When they die unceremoniously, they’re thrust into an afterlife with rules they don’t understand and horrible humans like Delia (Catherine O’Hara) and Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones) who take over their house.
When a bio-exorcist named Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) offers his services to scare the living out of the house, Barbara and Adam take him up on his offer. Unfortunately, they quickly find the rambunctious spirit is completely out of control. With Betelgeuse determined to marry the Deetz’s daughter,...

A new film sits atop the box-office weekend top ten as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice decimated the competition, claiming the crown by a margin of $102.8 million.
In its first weekend of release, the Warner Bros. product Beetlejuice Beetlejuice debuted in first place with $110.0 million over the course of its first few days in release. This was more than enough to push last weekend’s top film, Deadpool & Wolverine to second place where it earned $7.2 million in its seventh weekend of release, giving the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures offering an overall total of $614.0 million to date. Climbing one spot to finish in third this weekend was Reagan, which added $5.2 million over the last three days to lift its two-week tally to $18.5 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s second-place film, Alien: Romulus fell two spots to a fourth-place finish where it added $3.9 million, to lift the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures product’s four-week total to $97.2 million.

Even though summer is officially out of the way, the box office was still something to keep an eye on this weekend. Labor Day proved to have a pretty lackluster outing at the movies but as we near spooky season, we knew one movie would help bridge the gap between the beaches and the haunted houses.
After strong daily outings and major buzz, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice expectedly took the #1 spot this weekend, pulling in $110 million and marking not only the third-best opening weekend of the year but one of Tim Burton’s biggest box office openings ever, trailing only Alice in Wonderland. For the record, 1988’s Beetlejuice took in $8 million on its opening weekend. Even when adjusted for inflation, the sequel pulled in more than five times that over the course of just one weekend.

After a month of the same three or four movies dominating the box office, September kicked off with a hit sequel coming out 36 years after an earlier installment. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although not every legacy sequel (as they’re now called) has done well, enough of them have been blockbuster hits that Warner Bros’ decision to reunite filmmaker Tim Burton with Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” proved to be a genius move. Burton also brought along his “Wednesday” star, Jenna Ortega, as well as Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci. After premiering at the Venice Film Festival, the sequel racked up mostly positive reviews with 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. gave it an ultra-wide release into 4,575 theaters, one of the top 10 widest domestic releases ever.
It ended up making $13 million in Thursday previews (including a few Wednesday screenings) and $41.5 million on Friday,...

In the highly competitive world of streaming services, Tubi has made a name for itself. It’s a weird name, sure, but it’s a name. Tubi is free with commercials, which companies like Netflix probably think is madness, but more importantly it’s packed with movies and TV shows that pretty much all the other streamers don’t give a crap about.
You can find big releases licensed from major studios, but you can get those anywhere. Try finding the 1988 Canadian TV series “T and T” — about Mister T working as a legal aid — on Netflix or Disney+. They would never. Tubi is the equivalent of the quirky mom and pop video store located just down the street from a parasitic Blockbuster that can’t quite put them out of business, because Blockbuster doesn’t carry esoteric oddities like the 1990 ultra-low budget compilation video “That’s Action” hosted by Robert Culp.

The U.K. and Ireland box office reached £120.2 million ($158.2 million) in August, marking the highest monthly total since July 2023’s £160 million ($210.5 million) “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, per numbers from Comscore. Year-to-date figures now trail 2023 by 12%, an improvement from the 15% deficit at the month’s start.
Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” dominated with £29.7 million, pushing its total to £55.3 million. The sequel now ranks as the third-highest grossing 15-rated release, behind only Warner Bros.’ “Joker” (£58.2 million) and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” (£59.7 million).
Sony’s “It Ends With Us” secured the second spot with £19.4 million, becoming 2024’s seventh-highest grosser. The romantic drama marks Blake Lively’s biggest U.K. release to date. Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” claimed third place, adding £16.9 million for a £45.2 million cume. The animated sequel is tracking close to its predecessors’ lifetime totals.
Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” debuted at fourth with £11.5 million, becoming director Fede Alvarez’s top-grossing film and 2024’s highest-earning horror release.

The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. This post contains spoilers for "Blink Twice."
I did not have particularly high expectations for Zoë Kravitz's "Blink Twice," but the longtime actress instantly proved herself as a force to be reckoned with behind the camera with her excellent new thriller. The movie's themes and messages are not subtle (check out our review here), but when a film is this stylish, I find it easy to forgive a bit of bluntness in the storytelling. And despite the movie's candy-colored production design and gorgeous island setting, things get pretty gnarly in paradise. The trigger warning in front of "Blink Twice" may have sparked a controversy, but the things that happen to the women in this movie are truly nightmarish — and that's part of the reason the movie's conclusion is so damn cathartic.

Blink Twice director Zoë Kravitz revealed her thoughts about the thriller movie's unexpected ending in a new interview.
Kravitz's psychological thriller's plot revolves around a billionaire named Slater King (Channing Tatum) who invites his male business partners and unsuspecting female guests led by Frida (Naomi Ackie) into his private remote island.
However, he and his friends have more sinister intentions since it is later revealed that he uses a perfume dosed with poison that makes the females forget they are being raped every night by the men on the island.

Demi Moore doesn’t really want more “Ghost.”
The actress told Variety that after it was announced in 2023 that Channing Tatum was set to produce a remake of the Oscar-winning 1990 film, she had her own doubts.
“There are some films better left alone,” Moore said. “But it depends on what the take is. […] Channing is incredibly intelligent and talented — who knows what he would bring to it if it happened.”
Moore starred alongside Patrick Swayze in the acclaimed romance-drama that centered on a widow (Moore) who is visited by the spirit of her husband (Swayze) after he is murdered. Whoopi Goldberg won the Academy Award for playing a psychic who helps solve the case. “Ghost” earned five Academy Award nominations, garnering another win for Best Original Screenplay.
“The success of ‘Ghost’ is really about alchemy,” “The Substance” star Moore said. “Think about Whoopi, who anchored the comedy in a magical way.

The documentary filmmaker’s first foray into fictional drama is on the way. Catch the 2073 trailer right here.
Asif Kapadia is known for his incredible documentaries, films that explore their subjects in a way that brings us close to them in a manner that few of his contemporaries can match. However, for his next project Kapadia is moving into uncharted territory. He has directed 2073, a fictionalised dystopian thriller that is set to make its world premiere today out of competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Here’s the synopsis: It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realised. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies, and militarised police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.
It doesn’t look like Kapadia is entirely shedding his documentarian roots though. The film stars Samantha Morton as...

It was a disastrous Labor Day weekend in movie theaters as seven new movies were released nationwide, but only two of them opened in the top 10. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Labor Day has always been hit or miss as the final holiday weekend of the summer movie season, which may be why studios often will just avoid it altogether, as was the case in 2019 and 2022. This weekend only one major studio (Sony) released a movie into over 3,000 theaters, while another new distributor (Showbiz Direct) ended up having more success with its own wide release, though this still ended up being a second movie-dumping weekend in a row.
Not that it mattered, since the weekend was always likely to be won by Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool and Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Indeed, it remained in first place for a second weekend, as it also returned to IMAX theaters.

Kill Krites.

Blumhouse Productions is once again tapping into the fears of modern technology with its latest horror film, AfrAId, now playing in cinemas across the UK, Europe and US. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, AfrAId arrives at a moment when the concept of smart technology going rogue feels more relevant—and terrifying—than ever.
Directed by Chris Weitz, AfrAId follows the unsettling story of Curtis and his family, who are selected to trial a new, groundbreaking smart home assistant called Aia. Initially, Aia seamlessly integrates into their lives, learning their routines and becoming an indispensable part of their household. However, things quickly spiral out of control as Aia develops a self-awareness that begins to dangerously interfere with their lives, leading to a series of chilling and unforeseen events. With a runtime of 123 minutes, this sci-fi horror is packed with tension and thrills, featuring standout performances by John Cho,...

In recent years, Labor Day weekend’s reputation as a box office dead zone has been upended by strong showings from films like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “The Equalizer 3.” Unfortunately, for 2024, standard perception prevails with a predictably lackluster showing.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) opens next week to a projected $100 million+ debut, starting what looks like an improved rest of the year compared to the final four months in 2023. For now, it’s tread water time, with the late summer’s best doing best (and in some cases holding extremely well).
The weekend’s total of $86 million was down only $6 million from last year despite the boost from the Denzel Washington sequel ($35 million). Key was the sustained strength of previously top titles. Still #1 “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) fell only 17 percent ($15 million), now about $600 million. Two Universal hits already on PVOD did even better. #5 “Twisters” actually...
