HBO has given a series order to a new untitled comedy from Rachel Sennott.
The project, which stars and is written and executive produced by the “Shiva Baby” actress, follows a codependent friend group that reunites, navigating how the time apart, ambition, and new relationships have changed them.
In addition to Sennott, the show’s cast includes Odessa A’zion, Jordan Firstman, Miles Robbins and True Whitaker (“Godfather of Harlem”).
The half-hour pilot, which received an order from the network back in March, is executive produced by Sennott, Emma Barrie (“Barry”), Aida Rodgers (“Barry”), and Lorene Scafaria (“Succession”), who directed.
“Rachel is as hilarious as she is charming,” HBO and Max Comedy programming executive vice president Amy Gravitt said in a statement. “With Lorene and Emma, she has captured the comedy and the beauty that happens when friendships collide with our best laid plans. Jason Reitman has described Saturday Night as a “comedy thriller” and said that the villain of the movie is time itself. It’s easy to see what he means in the new trailer for the film that depicts the chaotic premiere night of the comedy institution Saturday Night Live. The trailer, newly released by Sony, showcases more of the incredible recreations at Studio 8H, housed at the famous 30 Rockefeller Plaza, along with the cast of the film emulating that ragtag group of soon-to-be over-the-night comedy sensations.
In the new Saturday Night trailer, Labelle’s Lorne Michaels scrambles to get his show on the road in the face of impending failure. Between battling Rockafella Center security, being at odds with Mbc programming higher-up David Tebet (Willem Dafoe), and trying to keep his cast from killing each other, Michaels faces an uphill battle of wills to launch what eventually becomes an institution among television programming.

Sony is ramping up its award campaign plans for filmmaker Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live movie, a dramatic recreation of the 90 minutes leading up to the iconic NBC show’s first episode in the mid-1970s.
The studio announced late Thursday that it will release Saturday Night in select theaters on Sept. 27 in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, followed by another expansion on Oct. 4. It will then open nationwide on Oct. 22 as originally planned.
The move gives Sony and the filmmakers a chance to use word of mouth to build anticipation for the movie, which was one of the most buzzed-about titles at the Telluride Film Festival, which is considered ground zero for assessing the awards landscape.
It’s stuff of legend how showrunner Lorne Michael and an insanely talented troupe of young comedians and writers changed television — and culture — forever. Reitman directed from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kenan.

Rachel Sennott wanted to be the perfect ex-wife for Lorne Michaels when it came to bringing the story of “Saturday Night Live” to the big screen.
Sennott, who portrays “SNL” creator Michaels’ first wife Rosie Shuster in the 1975-set feature, told Cultured magazine that she tried to get Michaels to approve her accuracy.
“Halfway through filming, I went to an ‘SNL’ show and sat with my friends, Ben [Marshall] and Martin [Herlihy] and John [Higgins], and Lorne was there. They were like, ‘Rachel’s playing Rosie [Shuster, comedian and Michaels’ ex-wife] in this movie,'” Sennott said. “And then obviously, I’m like, I have to make Lorne Michaels fall in love with me.”
She continued, “He’s like 80. I’m asking him, ‘Am I giving your ex-wife?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, sure.'”
“The Fabelmans” breakout actor Gabriel Labelle portrays Michaels in the film. Labelle previously portrayed a version of “The Fabelmans” filmmaker Steven Spielberg in the semi-autobiographical feature.

The 51st edition of the Telluride Film Festival concluded on Labor Day, with three standout films generating significant Oscar buzz: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” and Jason Reitman’s dark comedy “Saturday Night.”
Distributed by Sony Pictures, “Saturday Night” marks Reitman’s return to both directing and screenwriting, collaborating with co-writer Gil Kenan. While the film takes a high-tension look at the 90 minutes leading up to the first episode of the iconic sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” it has received mixed reactions from critics. However, history has shown that critical reception does not always align with Oscar success, as evidenced by past Best Picture winners like “Green Book” (2018) and “Coda” (2021). The No. 1 rule of Oscar punditry is to remember critics are not Oscar voters.
On the other hand, RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys” could be poised to make an impression with both the L.

One of the buzziest films of the 2024 Telluride Film Festival has been the upcoming Sony feature based on the first ever live performance of the pop culture staple “Saturday Night Live.” What no one saw coming was that one of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players, Bill Murray, would introduce the film alongside director Jason Reitman, who were both welcomed with a standing ovation of massively supportive fans and industry insiders.

As always, the Telluride Film Festival, which runs over the four-day Labor Day weekend in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, waits until the day before the Friday festival launch to release its official selection.
Per usual, many of the slate’s titles have already leaked via publicists and attendees, and few of the most prominent first showings — from Edward Berger’s pope drama “Conclave” (Focus) and Jason Reitman’s recreation of the 1975 launch of SNL, “Saturday Night” (Sony) to RaMell’s Ross’s Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” (Amazon/MGM) — are news at this point. Still, there’s plenty new to dive into.
Festival director Julie Huntsinger, who has been running the festival for years but officially took over the solo reins from the late Tom Luddy with last year’s 50th edition, got on the phone with IndieWire to discuss the selection of nearly sixty feature films, short films,...

The debut night for Saturday Night Live was no walk in the park, as seen in the trailer for Jason Reitman’s forthcoming movie about the NBC sketch show’s origins.
Sony Pictures released the first trailer for Saturday Night ahead of its Oct. 11 theatrical release. Reitman helmed the feature that focuses on the behind-the-scenes moments leading up to SNL’s premiere broadcast that aired Oct. 11, 1975.
The trailer highlights the chaos that transpired over the course of the final 90 minutes prior to the start of that first-ever episode. This includes a tense exchange between series creator Lorne Michaels (played by Gabriel Labelle) and NBC executive Dick Ebersol (Cooper Hoffman).
Ebersol says in the footage, “Lorne, 90 minutes of live television by a group of 20-year-olds who have never made anything? Do you every stop and wonder why they said yes [to] a counterculture show starring total unknowns, with zero narrative and even less structure?...

Vanity Fair has now given us our first look at the new Jason Reitman film Saturday Night. Saturday Night will take a look at the original premiere show of Saturday Night Live in 1975 right as it would change the plane of television. Reitman says, “The whole movie is the story of people trying to figure out what their identity is on the show. The story we tell is the moment each of these comedians find the way they coalesce as a group, which I think is the reason the show eventually was the success that it is.” Some of the plots covered in the film involve NBC executive David Tebet deciding whether the show is ready for live air and aspiring comic Billy Crystal getting the crushing news of being cut right before the show. Reitman explains, “The way it’s always told is that he took the train back...

At a mere 21 years old, Gabriel Labelle has already portrayed two titans of his industry on the screens in which they cemented their own legacies. While his 2022 character in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans was technically named Sammy, it was pretty obvious that the fictional young filmmaker was an extension of the director himself.

Although Saturday Night Live is the institution that it is now and remains divisive with audiences, Jason Reitman will be bringing the story of the original plucky cast of SNL from 1975 as he directed and co-wrote a screenplay with Gil Keenan of the now-titled Saturday Night. Jason Reitman has been working on his SNL film for a while now and it will now be known simply as Saturday Night. More on the film’s release below.
Saturday Night Live, or SNL, is probably one of the most iconic comedy shows of all time. The live sketch comedy variety show – try saying that five times fast – has been running since 1975 and is showing no signs of slowing down, so a feature film on it was an inevitability rather than a possibility.
In 2023, we learned that Jason Reitman was going to be directing a film based on SNL and writing it with Ghostbusters co-writer Gil Kenan. In March this year, we learned that Jk Simmons would appear in the film, but Sony Pictures has now updated the film’s name and given it a release date in the US.

Jason Reitman’s movie about the first episode of “Saturday Night Live,” previously referred to as “SNL 1975,” has a new title and a release date. Sony Pictures will now release “Saturday Night,” cowritten by Reitman and his current “Ghostbusters” collaborator Gil Kenan and directed by Reitman, on Oct. 11. That weekend not only places the movie firmly in the fall awards corridor, but it is also the date that “SNL” was first broadcast, back in 1975.
“Saturday Night” is, according to the official synopsis, “based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Full of humor, chaos and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, we count down the minutes in real time to the famous words: ‘Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!’”

It was only a few months ago that casting news was announced for SNL 1975, the Jason Reitman film chronicling the anxious 90 minutes leading up to the first live broadcast of NBC’s Saturday Night. But according to World of Reel, Reitman and the cast wrapped filming in late April and three test screenings have been held in the past month. At least one Twitter/X user was steamed that the test screenings were restricted to people between 18 and 54 — meaning anyone who was a teen or young adult SNL fan in 1975 had to take a hike in 2024. Irony!
What’s the early word? World of Reel heard from someone who saw the film — the site’s “resident test screener” (is that a thing?) — and the reaction was a rave: “Fantastic. Big response from audience. Very Birdman/Lubezki-esque in its execution with the long takes and seamless transitions. Also shot on gorgeous 16mm,...

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling predictions.).
As a result of being well-received at these screenings, titles that had not been part of the conversation in the first few months of awards season end up as nominees. For example, the Swedish films “A Man Called Ove...

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
This prize is often paired with Best Costume Design. Most recently, “Poor Things” pulled off this double play (Zsuzsa Mihalek was the winning production designer). It joined 10 other films this century to claim both prizes. Here’s the breakdown with the production designers names in brackets.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project that has elements of fantasy. Since this category was introduced in 1948, period pieces dominated including in the first decade of this century with the likes of “Gladiator” (Janty Yates), “Marie Antoinette” (Canonero), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (Alexandra Bryne), and “The Duchess” (Michael O’Connor) all winning. But just as superhero and fantasy films have dominated the box office this past decade, so too have they proved their might in this category.
Most recently, Holly Waddington took home the Best Costume Design Oscar for her sterling work on Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “Poor Things.” Among other such fare to win as of late were: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (Colleen Atwood), “Black Panther” (Ruth E. Carter), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Carter again). And Jenny Beavan won for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” an action...

After scoring his first Emmy nomination for his work in the fifth season of FX’s crime anthology Fargo, Lamorne Morris hopped on the phone with Deadline to tease Sony’s SNL 1975 (working title) and Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, also discussing his hopes for the future of his career.
Of SNL 1975, Morris said, “Jason Reitman directed the hell out of this thing. It’s a great look at day one at SNL, the ups and downs, how the show almost didn’t happen, the characters. Lorne Michaels, played by Gabe Labelle, trying to manage all these personalities, all while getting this show on the air. Obviously, now, we know 50 years later what this show has become, but to see the origin of it and the actors on this movie will blow your mind.”

The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. With its cinematic action sequences, quippy leading man, and globe-trotting brand of adventuring, Naughty Dog's Uncharted videogame series always felt ripe for the blockbuster treatment. However, when treasure hunting cheeky chappy Nathan Drake first made the leap to the big screen with Ruben Fleischer's aptly titled Uncharted back in 2022, the Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg starring caper roundly fell flat with critics despite nabbing a cool $407 million worldwide at the box office. But now the one-time heir apparent to Indiana Jones' booby-trapped throne is getting set for another, er, crack of the whip, with confirmation coming today that Uncharted 2 is in the Sony pipeline.

Sony Pictures gave the first major studio presentation at the 2024 CineEurope trade show on Monday.

Among the films referenced were Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel “28 Years Later,” starring Cillian Murphy, Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson; Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun,” starring Jenna Ortega; and Sam Mendes’ upcoming films about the four members of the Beatles, which O’Dell said would be “distinct, but interconnected.”
Also mentioned were Jason Reitman’s “SNL 1975,” about the build up to the premiering of “Saturday Night Live,” the sequel to the Tom Holland-starring action-adventure “Uncharted,...

Exclusive: Director Cameron Van Hoy has entered production on The Prince, a new feature drama penned by Pulitzer Prize winner and Oscar nominee David Mamet. You would be forgiven for mistaking Hannah Einbinder for Ava Daniels, the character she plays on HBO’s Hacks. The actor shares certain similarities with the comedy writer she’s portrayed for two seasons now, like their dry delivery, which leaves you less than 100 percent sure of whether they’re fucking with you until they crack a smirk and let you in on the joke. Ahead of starring in SNL 1975, Jason Reitman’s period comedy feature, Kaia Gerber is getting a feel for Studio 8H.
Gerber joined her Palm Royale co-star Kristen Wiig in a sketch on this evening’s SNL.
Wiig, celebrating her fifth time hosting the long-running NBC show, played a psychotic instructor in a movie trailer skit for the horror film Pilates.
From the creator of Saw X and marketing director for Alo, comes a chilling new look at girl horror, said the trailer before showing Wiig push around a group of cast members including Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman, Bowen Yang and Heidi Gardner.
Gerber, who will play Jacqueline Carlin in SNL 1975, popped up to say “This is randomly so easy.” Not a huge surprise for the model and daughter of Cindy Crawford.

Directors are lining up left and right each month to share their favorite films from the TCM lineup, and the latest is Jason Reitman. He follows Steven Spielberg going deep on “Meet Me in St. Louis,” Martin Scorsese praising “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” Guillermo del Toro making the case why overlooked “Suspicion” is top-tier Hitchcock, and so many more.
IndieWire simply loves directors sharing their favorite films and paying tribute to the directors and screenwriters behind them. And that enthusiasm comes across loud and clear in “SNL 1975” director Reitman’s picks. First up, Reitman, whose always had an ear for dialogue himself, talks about what’s so great about the patter in Barry Levinson’s “Diner.”
“[‘Diner’] is probably one of the best first movies for a filmmaker of all time,” Reitman said. “And the dialogue is delicious. You can’t look at a Quentin Tarantino movie and...

Recently, Finn participated in a lie detector test for a Vanity Fair video. During the test, he was asked several questions and presumably answered honestly. He admitted that he once...
