Timothée Chalamet’s ping pong movie is adding a few more players.
Odessa A’zion has joined the cast of “Marty Supreme,” from A24 and director Josh Safdie. Rounding out the cast are magician Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
Specifics about their roles are kept under wraps, but this motley crew joins previously announced cast members Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler, the Creator in the film, which is said to be about a professional table tennis player. Plot details are unknown, but A24 posted an image of a ping pong ball with the words “coming soon” after Variety broke news of the project in July.
Safdie and Ronald Bronstein wrote the original screenplay for “Marty Supreme” and produce alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24. Production kicks off in the fall.

The Safdie brothers' cinematic sensibility is unmistakable. Though Josh and Benny are operating separately at the moment, the sensibility is nevertheless present in both of their work. Of course, Benny Safdie co-created the bizzaro comedy The Curse with Nathan Fielder. Of course, Josh Safdie's movie with Timothée Chalamet will also star Kevin O'Leary,...

Back in 2018, music icon and Odd Future alum Tyler, the Creator shouted out Dune star Timothée Chalamet on his track 'Okra'. "Tell Tim Chalamet to come get at me / Skin glowin' , clear of acne" rapped the beat maker about noted hip-hop lover Chalamet. And whilst it's taken six years, it looks like Chalamet has indeed come and gotten at Mr. the Creator after all. According to Deadline, the rapper — whose real name is Tyler Gregory Okonma — is set to make his feature film debut in Marty Supreme, Chalamet and filmmaker Josh Safdie's upcoming A24 ping pong movie.
Okonma joins an increasingly buzzy cast for Safdie's solo directorial debut, with Chalamet already attached to produce and star, and Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow recently confirmed to be making her big screen comeback in the film. There's no confirmation as of yet regarding who Okonma, Chalamet, and Paltrow will play in the movie,...

Jeremy Allen White has been on a roll recently. With The Ironclaw and The Bear as credited works, the actor has earned a reputation for starring in two of the most hard-hitting and critically acclaimed projects of the past year. The 11 Emmys won by the FX series only goes on to show that White has graduated from his wayward Shameless days to now becoming one of the most impressive Hollywood stars.

Out of the 23 Emmy nominations and 11 wins, The Bear has proved itself to be a formidable force of entertainment in the comedy genre. But more often than not, Jeremy Allen White induces a panic attack and raises the blood pressure levels of his audience with each progressing episode of the series. After all, a show that was structurally inspired by Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems is bound to have an effect of a similar sort.

A24’s upcoming sports drama film “Marty Supreme” about a legendary ping pong player has added Grammy Award-winning recording artist and producer Tyler, the Creator to its cast. The movie already stars actors Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow and marks the first time director Josh Safdie has made a movie without his brother Benny Safdie.
Tyler, the Creator, best known for his music career, will take on his first major acting role in a feature film through “Marty Supreme.” While he has provided voice work for shows like Netflix’s “Big Mouth,” this film marks his biggest on-screen performance. Director Josh Safdie is known for successfully casting non-traditional actors in significant roles, like NBA player Kevin Garnett in “Uncut Gems,” and Tyler follows in those footsteps.

Award-winning artist Tyler, The Creator has joined the cast of A24’s “Marty Supreme” in his film debut, the company announced on Monday.
He’ll star alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Timothée Chalamet in the film directed and co-written by Josh Safdie.
Previous reports said that the film would be based on the life of table tennis champion Marty Reisman, but sources at the studio say the film is actually not a biopic but rather a fictionalized original work co-written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, both of whom will also produce with Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas.
“Marty Supreme” will mark Safdie’s first feature project since his 2019 film “Uncut Gems,” which he wrote and directed with his brother Benny. The brothers announced earlier this year that they would no longer collaborate on films in order to pursue separate projects.

The fashion designer and “See You Again” singer previously co-created and starred in Adult Swim’s “Loiter Squad” series alongside his Odd Future cohorts. He also co-created the Adult Swim animated show “The Jellies!” as well as the Viceland docuseries “Nuts + Bolts.”

Tyler, The Creator will “See You Again” very soon — but this time, on the big screen.
The Grammy Award-winning artist will make his film debut with the star-studded “Marty Supreme” alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Timothée Chalamet. Josh Safdie is directing the A24 film from a script he co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein.
“Marty Supreme” is a fictionalized, original feature with official plot details being kept under wraps. However, Variety previously reported that the film may be loosely inspired by the life of Marty Reisman, a ping pong champion who won 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships, across his career. He also made history as the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport while competing in the United States National Hardbat Championship. Reisman died in 2012.
For the film, Chalamet, Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and A24 produce.

Tyler, the Creator is set to make his feature film acting debut in Marty Supreme, the Timothée Chalamet A24 movie from Josh Safdie.

The Joker may be The Dark Knight’s most iconic nemesis, but the Penguin is one of his most memorable. Ever since Danny DeVito climbed from the sewers of Gotham with his flippered hands and black drool oozing down his chin, Oswald Cobblepot has held a place on the Mount Rushmore of live-action Batman villain portrayals. Colin Farrell’s turn as the iconic character couldn’t be more different from the twisted version audiences saw in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, but its equally as effective.

Back in 2022, Get Out, Us, and Nope writer/director Jordan Peele‘s production company Monkeypaw Productions acquired the genre film pitch Goat from writers Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the plan being that Peele would be producing Goat as part of Monkeypaw’s overall deal with Universal Pictures. The sports-related horror project made its way through production under the title Him earlier this year, and now – even though the movie won’t be reaching theatres until September 19, 2025 – the finished product has been given its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Him has been rated R for strong/bloody violence, language throughout, sexual material, nudity and some drug use.
Justin Tipping – who made his feature directorial debut with the 2016 drama Kicks – directed the film, with lead roles going to Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie), Tyriq Withers (The Game), and Julia Fox (Uncut Gems).

Like many popular comedic actors of the day, Adam Sandler got his start on “Saturday Night Live” first as a writer and then as a cast member. He was spotted by weekend update anchor Dennis Miller doing stand-up comedy and Miller recommended him for the show. Sandler was a big success on the show, particularly doing song parodies during the Weekend Update segments. Sandler left the show in 1995 after only five years on the program. Years later when Conan O’Brien was having his own problems with NBC, Sandler admitted to O’Brien that he was actually fired from “SNL” and didn’t leave voluntarily as had been assumed.
Sandler started off doing comedy films after that but has evolved into doing dramatic work at times. While he has a pretty strong track record as a box office draw, he has also often been the target of poor reviews from critics...

British Film Institute’s London Film Festival annual Screen Talks returns with a star-studded lineup that includes Andrea Arnold, Sean Baker, Steve McQueen, Lupita Nyong’o, Zoe Saldaña, and many more.
After featured Martin Scorsese, Andrew Haigh, and Lulu Wang spoke at the festival in 2023, this year’s crop of filmmakers represent the most highly-anticipated features on the 2024 festival circuit.
Sean Baker famously won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024 for “Anora,” which is an early Oscar frontrunner after IndieWire critic David Ehrlich praised the film for being a blend of “Uncut Gems” and “Pretty Woman.” At BFI, Baker will discuss his filmography including “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project,” and “Red Rocket.”
Steve McQueen, director of the Lff’s Opening Night Gala-selected film “Blitz,” will talk about his new film, alongside his work for the big and small screen, from “Hunger” and “12 Years a Slave” to “Widows,” “Small Axe,” and “Occupied City.

This year’s Telluride Film Festival was not short on mononyms. There was Martha, as in Stewart, the subject of R.J. But with due respect given to the acclaimed names above, none made a bigger impact on the festival than “Anora.” Sean Baker’s bold, hilarious, exhilarating new film had its North American debut in Colorado over Labor Day weekend, and the Palme d’Or winner played to packed houses and was often mentioned as a standout among attendees. 50 years after its original run, the Norman Lear-produced sitcom "Good Times" is more than just "Dy-no-mite!" It's a spinoff within a spinoff and a classic Black family sitcom that inspired controversy as well as laughter. Like many beloved shows from the '70s, "Good Times" made headlines for behind-the-scenes drama and cast disagreements, but it also captivated audiences.
Originally formulated as a spinoff of "Maude" (which was itself a spinoff of unlikely hit "All in the Family"), "Good Times" retconned its central characters and setting in favor of a new premise. Henry (John Amos) became James, the family got poorer, and the setting switched from New York to Chicago, where it took inspiration from the Cabrini-Green housing projects. Audiences still dug the new show, though by the time it signed off five years later, it had changed entirely: Amos and original star Esther Rolle had left, and the show's most one-dimensional character,...

Gwyneth Paltrow is set to make her first non-mcu film appearance in a decade, appearing in Josh Safdie’s upcoming ping pong drama, Marty Supreme.
Gwyneth Paltrow hasn’t sought out many roles in the last decade, preferring instead to occasionally pop up as Pepper Potts in a Marvel film, or just focus on her lifestyle brand, Goop. Despite being one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood at one point, Paltrow has been absent from our screens for almost a decade – with the exception of those rare Marvel appearances.
However, it looks like Paltrow has been tempted back to work by the prospect of working with a filmmaker and a star who are both on the rise. Josh Safdie is working on his first solo film following a couple of critically-acclaimed movies that he co-directed with his brother, Benny. 2017’s Good Times and 2019’s Uncut Gems are both thrilling...

After answering the call to defeat Thanos in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Gwyneth Paltrow stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight to appear in shorts, Netflix’s The Politician series, a voice-acting role in She Said, and a guest voice role in American Horror Stories. While in big screen hibernation, she nurtured Goop, her wellness and lifestyle program. Now, Gwyneth Paltrow is ready to return to cinemas as a featured player in Josh Safdie’s mysterious new film project, Marty Supreme.
The forthcoming film hails from Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems), with the project based on a script he co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein. Initially, watercooler whispers pegged Marty Supreme as a film loosely revolving around a pro ping pong player. However, the latest gossip says it’s a fictionalized original film. Is the project still making moves to tell the story of ping-pong professional Marty Reisman? Your guess is as good as ours.

Gwyneth Paltrow is back.
The Oscar winner and Goop mastermind is joining Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s ping pong movie “Marty Supreme.” The project marks Paltrow’s first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

Plot details for “Marty Supreme” are kept under wraps, but studio A24 posted an image of a table tennis ball with the words “coming soon” after Variety broke news of the project in July.
Paltrow, one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful actors since the 1990s, has been largely absent from the big screen since acting opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the “Iron Man” and “Avengers” movies. The project will feature her first substantial film role since Avengers: Endgame back in 2019.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the pic has been reported as being loosely inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman. The Goop founder will join Timothée Chalamet in A24’s Marty Supreme, to be directed by Josh Safdie from an original screenplay he co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein. Plot details remain under wraps, but while it was previously rumored to be loosely inspired by a pro ping-pong player, the movie is said to be a fictionalized original film.
Paltrow’s most recent movie credit was five years ago in Avengers: Endgame, and she’s also starred in Sliding Doors, Proof, Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums, Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, David Fincher’s Seven, the Farrelly brothers’ Shallow Hal and Alfonso Cuarón’s Great Expectations during her long career.
Marty Supreme will be produced by Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Bronstein, Safdie, Chalamet and A24. The project reunites Safdie with A24 after the company produced his two most recent films,...

Adam Sandler has been making audiences laugh for decades, from his early comedy albums to hit films like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. In recent years, he’s also found great success sharing new material through Netflix comedy specials. His 2018 special, 100% Fresh, showed Sandler’s skills at weaving stand-up, songs, and touching tributes into a seamless show.
This time around, Sandler enlisted an unconventional director, Josh Safdie, known for gritty films like Uncut Gems. Their new special Love You takes a cinematic approach, playing more like a surreal oddity than a traditional stand-up set. Shot documentary-style, it follows Sandler from the moment he arrives at a rundown theater, getting harassed by fans along the dusty backstage halls.
Once on stage, the unusual venue and directorial flourishes keep things intriguingly off-kilter. Safdie seems to subtly subvert expectations at every turn. But the heart of the special remains Adam Sandler’s hilarious,...

Adam Sandler has a new comedy special on Netflix available now. It's called "Love You," and it comes six years after the Sandman made quite an incredible comeback to the comedy special scene with his spectacular "100% Fresh," which featured new stand-up bits, goofy songs, and one hell of a lovely tribute to the late, great Chris Farley. Does Sandler still have the goods? The answer is yes, even if the special comes to a screeching halt thanks to a certain buddy of his (you can find out more in my full review over here). But this special comes with a little something extra, courtesy of a gifted filmmaker behind the scenes as director this time.
"Love You" is directed by Josh Safdie, one half of the Safdie brothers filmmaking duo that gave us the endlessly intense and anxiety-inducing drama "Uncut Gems," featuring a banger of a performance from Adam Sandler himself.

Don’t you think every form of content is easily available these days? I mean, some ten-fifteen years ago, it wasn’t that easy to find a true-crime series, a comedy special, or a baking show to watch while having dinner. But then came Netflix, and our lives were never the same. Make no mistake, I’m not complaining and trying to cling on to nostalgia here. But thanks to Netflix, we’re now spoiled for choices. If something doesn’t work for us, we move onto the next with a swipe of the finger. Almost every Tuesday, a standup special drops on Netflix. It has almost become the norm now. While some of these are genuinely great, the abundance of content in this genre (and every other genre) does kill the excitement. However, an Adam Sandler stand-up special, helmed by director Josh Safdie, is still a very special thing.

In Adam Sandler’s newest Netflix stand-up special Love You, the Uncut Gems and Jack and Jill star’s Safdie-Sandler era struggles under the massive weight of his many dick jokes.
Sandler’s first collaboration with the elite indie filmmaker Josh Safdie proved to be one of the most important projects of his career. When Uncut Gems premiered in 2019, it had been 17 years since Punch-Drunk Love last proved that The Sandman could pull off a more nuanced role than “man-child who yells a lot” in a film that’s more artistically ambitious than the average Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. The success of Uncut Gems led to a renaissance in Sandler’s non-family-film career as he went on to produce and star in more challenging projects in his pursuit of an Oscar nomination that continues to this day.

Julia Fox, the it-girl who rose to fame in the Safdie Brothers’ anxiety-ridden thriller “Uncut Gems,” has joined the cast of the upcoming romantic drama “Perfect.”
She will star alongside Ashley Moore (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”) and newcomer Micaela Wittman. Millicent Hailes, who has directed music videos for artists such as Adam Lambert, Lil Yachty and Young Thug, is helming the film in her feature debut. Production is due to begin next month.
“Perfect” is set at a scenic-but-rundown lakeside resort in the California mountains in a time where climate change has contaminated the water supply. Fox will play a wealthy pregnant woman who is living out an escapist fantasy as she falls in love with a younger woman (Moore). Their sudden relationship is complicated by an upcoming birth, turbulent social events and clashing values about the world’s uncertain future.

Back in 2018, comedian Adam Sandler made an impressive return to the comedy special scene with "100% Fresh," which fully delivered on what the title promised. Filmed at several different venues with varying crowd sizes, ranging from a more intimate Comic Strip stand-up club with dozens of fans to a massive theater with hundreds of people, the special featured Sandler doing bits of stand-up mixed with comedic songs about topics like Uber, heated toilet seats, and always remembering your phone, wallet, and keys when you're heading out somewhere. But Sandler also delivered some more nostalgic and lovely songs, such as "Bar Mitzvah Boy" and a heartfelt tribute to the late, great Chris Farley.

The planned baseball movie that Adam Sandler was to headline, from director Josh Sadfie, sounds a little less certain.
It’s been a few months since we heard anything regarding this particular project, which seems to be taking an age to get in front of cameras. The film in question is Josh Safdie’s untitled baseball film which will star Adam Sandler, marking the pair’s next collaboration following the excellent 2020 film, Uncut Gems.
That film was a riveting drama that was bought to us courtesy of Netflix and was directed by Benny and Josh Safdie. The Safdies are no longer directing together, with Benny having moved on to helm A24’s The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson.
The film is said to focus around baseball and as such, needs to shoot during the sport’s season. Last year’s strikes meant that couldn’t happen and as such, the project seems to have stalled.

Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix project, the stand-up special Love You, hits the streamer next week, but fans of the comedian are eagerly awaiting a future Netflix title: Happy Gilmore 2.
Netflix confirmed in May that it had ordered a movie sequel to the 1996 film, after Sandler and co-star Christopher McDonald said in separate interviews that such a project was in the works.
Now, making the rounds to promote Love You, Sandler is revealing more about what to expect from Happy Gilmore 2. On Tuesday’s Tonight Show, Sandler indicated that filming would begin in a couple of weeks in New Jersey, with real golfers and even a Travis Kelce cameo, after the Chiefs star and Sandler fan said he’d do “anything” to be in the film.
“It’s good,” Sandler said of the sequel. “We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down.

IndieWire attended the New York City premiere of “Adam Sandler: Love You” on Tuesday, August 20. Following “Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh” from 2018, the actor and comedian returns to Netflix for his latest stand-up special, directed by none other than Josh Safdie.
Reuniting with one of his “Uncut Gems” directors, Sandler told IndieWire that being directed by Safdie for this special was a very, very collaborative experience. “He was very hands on,” Sandler told IndieWire. “Right when he became a part of it, he had thought after thought, and I thought I was just going to do a standard stand up special. I had an act that I’ve been working on and all my stuff [prepped], and then Josh came up with some ideas that were different than that.”
At the end of last year, it was reported that Sandler was set to make his reunion with his 2019 crime thriller directors with a “live baseball” film.

If you’ve never had a full-blown panic attack, well, first off, congratulations. You’re living the dream. Secondly, you should probably know that they’re no fun whatsoever. Nobody ever huddled in a corner with a debilitating shortness of breath and a stun-locked brain has come out the other side thinking, “Now, That’s entertainment!”
So it’s funny that so many movies try to entertain us by throwing their protagonists into panic mode and making the audience share that anxiety. Even great films sometimes do the job a little too well. Fortunately for me and everyone else in the audience, Austin Peters’ “Skincare” knows exactly what it’s doing, balancing a sense of total desperation with just enough camp to convey its nightmarish situations without ruining your day. Whether a terrifying Postman Pat, a mortifying sex scene, or a brush with button-phobia, our writers report on the family viewing they will never forget
This summer, a new book of movie recommendations for children called Hey Kids, Watch This! will be published. It’s been produced by distributor A24, an outfit whose own titles – Uncut Gems, Midsommar, The Zone of Interest – are not immediately family friendly.
The book is correspondingly chewier than most. Yes, Free Willy features, but so does Hedgehog in the Fog, Yuri Norstein’s 10-minute short from 1975. It sings the praises of modern mainstream blockbusters such as Chicken Run, along with older, more niche titles such as Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed.

Netflix’ Paris Theater, NYC’s longest-running arthouse and Manhattan’s sole single-screen cinema, is marking one year since reopening with the return of screening series Big & Loud.
Special presentations include a new 70mm print of Alfred Hitchock’s Vertigo screening for the first time in New York, new 70mm prints of North By Northwest and The Searchers, as well as 70mm screenings of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Boogie Nights, Hamlet (1996), Inception, Lawrence of Arabia, Malcolm X, Nope, Phantom Thread, Spartacus and The Untouchables.

“The only premise I could ever really give to people for this show is it’s like if Christopher Guest directed ‘Uncut Gems,’” Adam Pally says, previewing his new series “Mr. Throwback.” The mockumentary show does have a similar shape to Josh and Benny Safdie’s modern crime classic: a so-sad, so-fucked-up Jewish businessman takes on life-threatening mob debts and, in a shameless act of survivalist drive, dogs an NBA star and extracts money from him through a bombardment of white lies.
Only in “Mr. Throwback,” Pally’s character, Danny Grossman, is a former basketball prodigy, the “Jewish Jordan” that once went “100 and 100”. Stephen Curry was his back-up in middle school. But Danny’s career ended early after his alcoholic father and coach (Tracy Letts) is caught in an elaborate lie. Adam Sandler and Josh Safdie are finally reuniting for the screen.
The “Uncut Gems” duo are back for Sandler’s Netflix comedy special, titled “Adam Sandler: Love You.” The special marks Safdie’s comedy-special directorial debut. This is Sandler’s second special for Netflix after his 2018 Emmy-nominated “100% Fresh.”
Sandler was set to star in the Safdie Brothers’ upcoming untitled sports-memorabilia Netflix movie, with Josh Safdie directing solo from a script he co-wrote with brother Benny Safdie. However, the project was stalled in part due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Adam Sandler is in a loving mood with the trailer for his first stand-up comedy special in six years.
The star is featured in the promo released Wednesday for his forthcoming Netflix special Adam Sandler: Love You. Launching on the streamer Aug. 27, the project is directed by Josh Safdie, who co-directed Sandler with brother Benny Safdie in the 2019 film Uncut Gems.

“I love you!” declares Adam Sandler not once, but eight times in the trailer for his new Netflix stand-up special, Adam Sandler: Love You. “Yeah, alright, so anyways, I talk a lot, and then I sing, and then we do a bunch of shit,” Sandler says to the melodic sounds of a guitar strumming behind him — which we later find out he’s playing himself.
Following his 2018 special 100% Fresh,Sandler returns to the stage — replete with zip-up hoodie over Hawaiian button-down — for his second Netflix special. And it’s a reunion, too: Uncut Gems co-director Josh Safdie makes his comedy special directorial debut. “We’ve lost control,” Sandler declares in the trailer, making a gesture to smash an electric guitar as a robust but unexplained dog runs across the stage. “What the fuck is happening?”

Nearly six years after the release of his last comedy special, Adam Sandler is returning to Netflix with “Adam Sandler: Love You.” The comedy special directed by “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems” co-director Josh Safdie will premiere globally on the streamer Aug. 27.
The first trailer for the special shows Sandler in a surprisingly intimate theater rather than a large arena. After joking with the audience a bit, he gets down to the brass tacks of what everyone can expect.
“Anyway, I talk a lot and then I sing and then we do a bunch of s–t. All right, so here it goes,” Sandler says.
The ever-moving camera then cuts between Sandler onstage with mic in hand, closeups of him signing shirts and a car driving away as its being chased by a crowd of people. “We’ve lost control,” Sandler says as a dog appears from backstage and happily greets the audience.
