Laurie Michelson is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Michelson was a federal magistrate judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan prior to her confirmation to an Article III position. In July of 2013, President Obama nominated Michelson for a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.[1] On March 12, 2014, Michelson was confirmed by the Senate on a vote of 97-0.[2]


Early life and education

Michelson attended the University of Michigan, earning her A.B. in 1989. She went on to earn her J.D. in 1992 from Northwestern University School of Law.[3]

On July 25, 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Laurie Michelson to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan to fill the vacancy left by George Steeh.[1] Obama commented on the nomination, stating:

These men and women have had distinguished legal careers and I am honored to ask them to continue their work as judges on the federal bench. They will serve the American people with integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice.[3][4]

Michelson was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association.

Michelson's nomination was returned by the Senate on January 3, 2014 and she was renominated on January 6th by President Obama.[5]

Michelson's nomination was reported to the full Senate on January 16, 204 after a voice vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee.[6] She was confirmed by the Senate on a vote of 97-0 on March 12, 2014.[2]
