About this app

Signal is a messaging app with privacy at its core. It is free and easy to use, with strong end-to-end encryption that keeps your communication completely private.

• Send texts, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files for free. Signal uses your phone’s data connection, so you avoid SMS and MMS fees.

• Call your friends with crystal-clear encrypted voice and video calls. Group calls supported for up to 40 people.

• Stay connected with group chats up to 1,000 people. Control who can post and manage group members with admin permission settings.

• Share image, text, and video Stories that disappear after 24 hours. Privacy settings keep you in charge of exactly who can see each Story.

• Signal is built for your privacy. We know nothing about you or who you’re talking to. Our open source Signal Protocol means that we can’t read your messages or listen to your calls. Neither can anyone else. No back doors, no data collection, no compromises.

• Signal is independent and not for profit; a different kind of tech from a different kind of organization. As a 501c3 nonprofit we are supported by your donations, not by advertisers or investors.

I cannot describe how much I hate my user experience in 500 characters or less, but I'll try. Nothing is straightforward. Every solution to a problem has to be Googled because the design isn't intuitive. Constant connection issues. Constant updates. Constant unlinking for no reason. Calls won't go through. And Signal, if you are going to coerce users into linking a mobile device to use the desktop version, make sure the app isn't broken so I can actually relink my devices and talk to my family.

A pretty handy little piece of kit when you know people who all use different apps. I use it on my desktop as well. The lack of integrated voice and video chat is the reason I dock it a point, and another half-point for the lack of customization features (like changing colors and backgrounds for each user). I give it back another half-point because it's a work of brilliance. I'm hoping for more supported protocols in the future. Beeper is the Miranda of mobile chat.

2 stars for the privacy and security, otherwise would be one star... Unfortunately most the time it doesn't work... Messages won't send, lot of times won't receive a message until I open the app, calls are usually spotty and often drop. I keep the app updated but still have these issues, and have for a while. It's becoming unusable so unless issues are fixed I'll have to look for another good privacy and security messaging app.
