Abstract

PIP: The author uses data on a sample of 150,000 households to examine the process of linguistic transfer in the United States. It is shown that Spanish Americans are assimilating quickly and uniformly into the English-speaking majority and that even in parts of the United States adjoining the Mexican border, the rate of linguistic transfer from Spanish to English exceeds 50 percent.
