The relationship of osteoarthritis and exercise

Clin Sports Med. 1992 Apr;11(2):471-87.

Abstract

We have discussed the epidemiology of osteoarthritis as well as its physiology and pathophysiology. Most important, we have looked at exercise as a potential cause of this chronic disease and have offered information concerning the possibility of SROA. Finally, we have looked at exercise as a possible treatment and how it may become an intervention and positive factor in the reversibility of this disease. Figure 4 summarizes our current knowledge of the relationship between exercise and the chronic disease process known as osteoarthritis.
