Abstract

Fungal urinary tract infections, especially those caused by Candida species, have become increasingly frequent over the last decade, especially in hospitalized patients. However, no clearly defined criteria can distinguish between colonization and infection or between upper and lower urinary tract infection. The authors review the risk factors, epidemiology and pathogenesis of candiduria and propose diagnostic and treatment strategies for most of the situations encountered in clinical practice.
