Intraoperative identification of the internal carotid artery: a safety issue

J Vasc Surg. 2006 Jan;43(1):159-61. doi: 10.1016/j.jvs.2005.09.007.

Abstract

The correct intraoperative anatomic identification of the vascular structures in the carotid artery bifurcation is important, and in most operations, this is not a problem. Experiences with two cases are used to suggest a stepwise system to guarantee that anatomic confusion--a confusion that may be fatal--does not occur.
