New surgical approach for migraine

Otol Neurotol. 2006 Aug;27(5):713-5. doi: 10.1097/01.mao.0000226304.66822.6d.

Abstract

Objective: To introduce a new procedure for the treatment of intractable cases of migraine.

Study design: To eliminate the excessive vascular and nervous effect by ligation of superficial temporal artery and middle meningeal artery and severance of greater superficial petrosal nerve.

Results: A total of 10 patients with cases of severe migraine underwent the surgery. A follow-up of 2 to 18 years showed no recurrences. Among the patients, three were living and well for more than 10 years.

Conclusion: With an extradural approach, the procedure is relatively safe and simple. It stands as a good alternative for the treatment of intractable cases of migraine.
