Abstract

Numerous population studies have consistently demonstrated a lower risk ofheart attacks as a result of moderate alcohol consumption, especially in the presence of an increased cardiovascular risk. Nevertheless, this association is still considered to be controversial, probably as a result ofthe negative effects of excessive consumption. This does not mean that moderate alcohol consumption may not be recommended for the prevention of heart attacks in the relevant segments of the population.
