Importance of subtypes in alcoholism

Abstract

Despite recent advances in diagnostic criteria for alcoholism, it is likely that there are still important subgroups of individuals with this disorder. This paper reviews the pros and cons of various approaches to subtyping alcoholic patients, and draws some conclusions about the work that remains to be done.
