Provisional restoration to preserve interdental papillae in the esthetic zone: a case report

J Indiana Dent Assoc. 2009 Spring;88(1):31-5.

Abstract

Patients are more aware of dental esthetics than ever before and demand more than just a replacement of a missing tooth. The selection of the type of provisional restoration can significantly influence esthetics during the period of implant integration and soft tissue healing. A restoration that preserves or helps to regenerate interdental papillae has always been a challenge for both experienced and inexperienced practitioners. The case presented here shows how a fiber-reinforced provisional restoration was used immediately after extraction to preserve the interdental papillae. This is a good alternative to removable provisional restorations as it has minimal bulk, provides the security of a fixed restoration and the predictability of molding tissue while it is healing.
