Abstract

Within clinical research the spectrum of possible trial objectives and designs ranges from explanatory to pragmatic. Pragmatic trials improve the knowledge base for clinicians, patients, regulatory and funding bodies as well as manufacturers of medical products. However, the pragmatic design has certain limitations and the assessment of external validity requires a considerable amount of judgment. Investigators need special expertise to conduct this kind of studies.
